Please. Federer survived more soul crushing defeats at slams (3 GS semis with MPs) and moved on. Don't tell me a RR defeat to Delpo will be soul crushing. Not that I ever claimed to be a 'real Federer fan' but I equally doubt the motives of any Federer fan who looks forward to a subpar, aging Federer facing a beasting Nadal .

A win is a win, I don't care who Fed loses to, I just want to see Fed to win as many matches as possible.

And to whoever who posted the stat of Fed getting broken within the first 3 games in a decider 100% of the time this year, they're wrong. Fed was only broken in the sixth game against Delpo in Paris.

You're not wrong. Sometimes I'm in two-minds about it too but watching him want it so much, it's difficult not to want it for him.

I think the stat was "first 3 of Fed's service games in the decider" not "first 3 games in the decider".

You call these service games from Del Potro great tennis? The guy should be serving 130-140 mph bombs with his size putting Fed on the defensive right away.

Sorry to say but you are a big I****. Cant you realize that if a top player can play at his 100% no matter what the situation is he would be unbeatable??? Imagine someone leading 5-1 in a set and then somehow winning that set, then for the next two sets leading only to see himself trailing in the set. Aint that reason enough not being able serve those bombs.

Do yourself a favour and stop watching tennis. Because to me only thing that you look for in a tennis match is to bring Roger down.

It is only the Nadal fans who salivate at the prospect of a Fedal match , when the result is a foregone conclusion with Fed's current form.

LOL yeah. That totally applies right now. Get with the times. Federer is not that resilient anymore. He has been freefalling all year and has recently said that he needs wins to feel like a top 10 player again. It's not about looking forward to a Fedal clash at all. I would like to see Federer perform his best in this tournament and Nadal is simply in his way, that is the way it is. I'm not fond of Fedal matches either.

Is it a foregone conclusion? Maybe, but according to your clarky-esque predictions regarding Nadal, he will win WTF anyway and everything is a virtual bye for him. So, its all good.

virtual 'bye' for Nadal

I'll let Sid_Vicious reply, but allow me to add my 2 cents.

sbengte as a poster I've always gotten the feeling you're the equivalent to Clarky, albeit less robotic and with a greater humor.

Nadal is not the machine, the prodigy, the superhuman you're trying to make him out to be, just like Clarky tries to make Djokovic seem like.

Even though Nadal is much younger and does have what you could call a 'match up advantage' vs. Federer, Federer does stand a chance vs Nadal on this surface, even if it's 2013. The evidence of that lies in how he blasted him off the court on this surface 2 years ago in his post-prime form.

The reason why you're selling your man short is because it psychologically is easier to deal with a loss, if you've already prepared you're (your player) is going to lose. I'm sorry for going all Dr. Phil on you here, but in those ways you seem to resemble Clarky a lot.

I won't feed you any corny chessnuts like "Believe in your man", but I would appreciate if you'd give both Federer and Nadal a little more respect around here, by not treating like this match is a foregone conclusion - because it isn't.

No, his predictions aren't clarkyesque. Actually, he is 100 % on his predictions. Nadal did win USO. ;)

:) Delpo , Djoker will at least make him work for it as against Fed (and Wawa).
Anyway, I have to begrudgingly acknowledge that today's match was probably the 'real final' and it is good to see the old man show he's still got it and how much the win meant to him.

What happened to Gasquet? I thought him and Djokovic were supposed to play.

They just showed the matchups and Gasquet wasn't there.

Jimmy Arias saying he saw tears in Roger's eyes at the end of the match

Most memorable moment of the match was Federer monologuing to himself after a missed opportunity. He went on for like 5 minutes. It was like Murray and Federer combined in one body.

clarky has this odd sense that if she predicts one thing, usually the opposite will happen or she'll go "I told you so." A win win. But that is different to this poster because:

a) It's been a bad year for Roger.
b) He really does have a losing record against Nadal.

It's just that imo at this point he hasn't got much to lose. A win here will not redeem his record OR necessarily give him the title because he will likely face Djokovic again. A loss will be...well, a loss.

I see. You did meantion that you would be moving, or are you still in Wales? Good luck for the new job, and everything works out for you! :)

I'm, yeah, fine. I still hate my job, and was getting down by it, but I have some clarity on what I want to do with my life. I miss Wales, there is a guy at my job from Tedegar so we often talk about home. London is great otherwise, so much more opportunity here for me than in Cardiff.

Apparently Roger was saying he used a lot of bad words on himself in that moment.

Looking at Fed's reaction I wonder if he is retiring next year before WTF. Somehow he gives the vibe like he is playing his last WTF. Otherwise why would mirka be so flustered and Fed emotional?

Because Fed has had an exceptionally tough year both with his back problems and general results/ranking. Qualifying for the WTF was in itself an achievement and making it out of the group stages must really mean something to him. Every win against a top player is instrumental in restoring his confidence after the crappy results he has had during the year. Nothing to do with retirement, no I don't think so.

But yeah, it could be his last WTF if he fails to qualify next year.

@mandy01: He did look emotional, I thought he was going to cry.
I too am curious about Mirka being more animated than usual.

She was against Djokovic too I think. I hate to think of stuff like it's going to be his last WTF though. :(

Thank God I only started watching from 2nd set onwards, otherwise I would have been so ****ed. But Federer showed great courage and grit in coming back from a break down in both sets to eventually seal it in the end. Hoping for a good match tomorrow.

I don't think I can remember that, but it does sound familiar. They kept showing his dad on the tv, and he was very invested in the match, but then he always is...Sorry, my memory is awful these days :(

The comms were saying that this could be his last WTFs, and that we might not see him next year, but I took it to mean that he wouldn't qualify, not retirement. :)

He did it, guys. Don't ask me how, because I have no idea. But somehow he got through.
It's not that much of a surprise. He beat Delpo in Paris too. This is Fed's last chance to shine in 2013 and WTF is one of his favorite events. He's gonna give it his all for sure.

Yeah, yeah Nadal will win now. H2H will get worse, blah blah.

I don't see how a real Federer fan could root against him in this match. It mean't so much to him that his soul would have been crushed if he lost this match. You are like dudeski, everything is connected to Nadal.

Really though. Nice post. At this point, I don't give two craps if Fed loses to Nadal. If he wins I'll be over the moon naturally, but if he loses so be it. I expect Nadal to win anyway. That is not me trying to lessen the blow of a potential loss, that is my honest opinion. I don't care if Nadal beats Fed a thousand times from here on out. I just wanted this win for him because he obviously wanted it for himself. How can you root against that as a fan regardless of who Federer plays next?

Exactly.

Besides, any stat that could have been better by retiring early (W/L, H2H, .....) is not that important for this very reason.

Awesome match. Federer's FH was bad, but everything else was top class.

Almost came back in 1st set. Was clearly the better player . Won like 15 more point than Delpo and he looked like he was going to break Delpo every other game.

The games he lost were some brief memory loss.

He had some great streaks like winning 12 points on a stretch.

Exactly. Even if Nadal wins, Fed will still lead Rafa 4-1 in this event, still a comfortable margin. He has nothing to lose. He may as well go for it.

True, but my point is bigger. I just honestly do not give a damn about who leads in what events anymore. I don't care about Fed leading 4-1. I care about watching the man play.

Yeah, I think when people start breaking H2H's down to specific tournaments, it's getting silly.

The H2H ship sailed long ago, for lots of reasons not worth going into again, now I just want moments like this evening to keep happening :)

The odds for Federer are 5/2. Unless I'm mistaken, that means that people actually putting money on it think the odds of Federer winning are 28.6% vs. 71.4% for Nadal.

Nadal is the favorite according to the market. This is the most reliable predictor of matches. So it would be a fairly big, but not huge upset for Federer to win.

Federer - Del Potro matches never cease to be entertaining. One guy will show his true brilliance and immediately the other one shows his talent. After a few games one will have some magical brain freeze and the other one will follow as well. And you never know who is going to win until almost the last game :D

In all honesty guys, how was the match? I missed this. :(

Fed started the match like he was dreaming, was trying exhibition mode but obviously didn't work, seemed like he was lost or something. Gets broken in 1st game, and again at 1-3 when up 40-0 in his own service game. Then when Delpo served for the set at 5-2, Fed finally remembered his game plan and started using more slices, defending better off the BH wing, won 10 points in a row to get back to 4-5, had 2 BPs to even it all but Delpo saved both with clutch serving and won 6-4.

Second set: Fed got to deuce in Delpo's 1st service game, couldn't captialise, gets broken at 1-1. Breaks back to love at 1-3 by some sloppy points from Delpo. Fed upped his game by the end of the 1st set and was the same here, held comfortably to TB, played a magnificent TB, seals it with an ace 7-2.

Third set: Like against Djokovic, gets broken in 1st service game and goes down 0-3. At 3-1, Delpo choked an easy put away BH DTL ala Rafa AO2012 style, gets pushed back to 30-30 instead of 40-15. Fed got BP afterwards but missed FH by a fraction (same as against Djokovic 1st set), but got the 2nd after Delpo hit a FH long. Shaky service game from Fed but still held to 3-3. Fed finally broke again at 5-5, couldn't make a single first serve in the deuce court when serving for the match, saved a BP, and wins his 1st match point with an ace.

Overall: After 1-5 in the 1st, Fed played great other than the two service game he gifted to Delpo. He defended really well and used the slices to move Delpo around as usual, when he was patient he got his reward. And Fed's mental strength and will dragged him through to the end.
