Why does Djokovic struggle to win a slam outside Australia?

When you look at how good he can play, you do wonder why he couldn't win a slam outside of Oz all these years, except 2011.

What do you think is his problem?

What do you think is his problem?

1. Unlucky Netcord
2. draining 5 setter semi with Delpo
3. Mental lapse end of 3rd set after GOAT'ing for 2 sets.

With a little luck, he may have had a grand slam this year.

The answer is pretty simple and he was outplayed by Nadal twice (French, Usopen) and by Murray (Wimbledon). They were the better player at each event.

1. unlucky netcord? You serious? One point doesn't win or lose you a match if you're that good. Play a tennis match to know more.

2. That's to be expected in slams. You can run into a good player in form. These things happen.

3. That's your own fault if you can't stay focussed for that long. Best of 5 matches require great mental focus in important matches.

Djokovic was not autplayed by Nadal on FO and USO. He was the better player on both tournaments.

Because he was playing against 3-all time greats all in top form.

Murray and Fed were top form at W 12/13. And Rafa at RG/USO was amazing. The counter shots Rafa produced in pressure situations at both majors were insane.

He's been super consistant the last 2 years but not much else. He hasn't really had any standout performances at the slams aside from Australia. He was lucky not to lose in 4 sets at the FO this year and he played crap in the Wimbledon final. He's had a habbit in recent slam finals of starting very slow and it's cost him.

This seems sensible :)

bad luck for nole in the slams.

in RG that amateur error was unbeliveable...........he would won nadal if he didn`t made that fool error.

in us open he choked so badly the 3º set.

and murray should give the thanks to delpo for his gold medal and wimbledon title , he destroyed the physicall of nole and federer

1. In very close matches, just 1 or 2 points decide the winner and loser. If Nadal was the one who touched the cord, we will not be seeing this thread.

2. Murray played Janowicz and Novak played Delpo. No comparison there. I agree Murray was the clear better player. However on a normal day, you can expect Novak to beat Murray.

3. Did i say it was Nadal's fault that Novak had a lapse ? it happens. Here again, Novak beat Stan in a 5 setter while Nadal played his lapdog for 4 games.

Talk about parity..

makes sense. He's been very consistent but perhaps hasn't played that good in the biggest matches.

Yes he was outplayed by Nadal. Watch the 5th set if you want the facts. Nadal hit many winners from both wings in that set alone. He should serve out the match in 4 sets anyway.

But he didnt win it in 4 , because Novak is not the one who folds up.

Keeping my fingers crossed that he gets lucky in 2014.

Ok. Thanks for your contribution. I guess you may have explained just why Djokovic, apart from 2011, has never won a slam outside Down Under.

He was also playing incredible opponents, who were in form.

And some luck also. USO 12, RG 13 could have gone either way. Even USO 13 was very close.

But his luck evened out, I guess. He was due. AO 12, USO 10/11. He also was close to losing to Wawrinka both times this year.

Djoko is a great player but he has 3 relative soft spots:

1. mental toughness - he seems to have issues with nerves and mental consistency in big matches
2. his serve - it can be great but there are still moments where he can flake out on serve - he did it against Federer at WTF. I think this relates to how he mentally handles pressure. If he gets tight, he can get a steel elbow on serve and throw in some weak serves and DFs.
3. net game - he still does not like to come in and passes on many chance to close points. Nadal has been totally out of position and thrown a high floater back to reset the point. Nadal will frequently go on to win these points. Djoko did better at WTF recently as he was 10 of 14 late in the 2nd set from the net.

Only Murray, Nadal, and Federer are good enough to exploit these RELATIVE weaknesses.

I think Djoko will win 2 majors next year but not sure which 2.

He devoted his whole career to not letting Nadal win another AO. He couldn't be bothered much with other minor slams imo.

Anyone who seriously thinks Djokovic was the "better player" against Nadal at RG either didn't watch the match, or is a clear Djokovic fanboy.

Nadal was blowing him off the court. 22 winners in the 5th set. Djokovic was just out of his league. He was a warrior, kept it tight even in that set, but he really had no chance to win it all with Nadal GOATing.

Wimbledon- andy is the best grass court player out there.
He had a long quarter and 4 sets in semis.
Rafa best clay player. Look at how djoker choked in 2012.
It is 2 years since 2011. 8 slams since then. 6 outside Australia.
This is not unluck, but he hasnt had the mental edge. Must be that as he has the skills to win more slams outside Australia. Specially us open.

Good question. Had Murray, over the past two years, racked up a bunch of points in 1000's and whatnot, but failed in most of the big moments, what would be said about him? 2011 is the only reason Djoker does not receive Murray-style criticism. If, in 2014, he continues to fail in the big moments, people may stop giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Nadal clearly choked in that 4th set, he should have served it out. Credit to Novak for taking advantage but his level in 1st and 3rd sets of that match was pretty dire. At Wimbledon he looked strong in the early rounds and was excellent versus Del Potro but was terrible in the final versus Andy. Similarly he was only good for 2 sets in the USO final.

So how pray tell am I wrong? Either Djokovic was playing excellent tennis and was beaten convincingly despite this or he wasn't playing his best in those matches.

Murray has lost to Young, Bogomolov and Chardy for God's sake.

Novak has shown the consistency from 2011, that is Federer like. And that is something hard for Nadal fans to accept.

14 or 15 continuous semis till now. I will wait to hear when Nadal gets 10.

Please! Federer dominated slams except FO because of Nadal. Djokovic doesn't.

What does that bolded part mean ? Why the heck should 2011 not count ?

Nadal was adjusting his wedgie ?

People criticized Nadal all the time for not winning slams outside of RG until he finally did. And even after he won non-RG slams people still whined about him being a clay and RG specialist. While I didn't agree with the extent of the criticisms, some of it was warranted until Nadal really picked it up on other surfaces.

So why is it totally out of bounds to question Djokovic for only having ONE year in his entire career where he's won a slam that isn't his pet slam? 2011 was a phenomenal year for Djokovic, but he's been on tour for a long time now.

The French Open 2013 and AO 2012 matches were pretty much identical, both went to 5 sets but should have been finished in 4.

Those winners were from defensive positions. That is not blowing someone off court.

But still, it doesn't take anything away from Rafa. Just that your perception of blowing someone off court is different than mine.

Read the 2 bolded parts and see how much you are one-sided.

People stopped complaining about Nadal when he won outside of RG. That is not ok.

But Novak should win outside of AO year after year.

Because Nole is not in the same league as Rafa and Fed. We expect less from him, so he shouldn't be criticized.

While for Fed making 7 major finals, winning 2 majors, 2 WTFs in 2 years is considered a bad year, for Novak this is amazing.

Remember that at the end of 2010 Nole had 1 major. He already achieved higher than was expected.

We can't use the same standards. I mean for Fed it's normal to be nr.1 and win 3 majors a year. We can't use the same for Novak.

He should have lost 2012 Australian Open Final to Nadal, who showed more heart than he ever has.

If he had lost that, he would have been broken losing at his 'gimme' event.

Except that there are STILL people complaining about Nadal's slam count off RG, even with 5 slams off RG. It's not nearly as bad now considering Nadal has thoroughly proved himself, but there's still a decent amount of criticism. Most of it only died down in 2010, after 3 consecutive years of winning non-RG slams. Djokovic is at 1 year, almost 3 years ago.
