Actual 5.5 and 6.0 play

Other than the pace of the serves I wasn't impressed with either of these guys.
I agree. How can you be a 5.5 or 6.0 and not keep the ball in play for more than 2 or 3 shots? I can't even count the unforced errors, there are so many. It's like, serve return out, serve return out, serve return out. Fault fault fault. They hit hard which seems to be their goal and the white guy has a hard serve but I see two shots and than someone hits it out.

Perhaps what you're seeing here is people of similar skill levels, but still not pro, trying to win. Since they're both similarly able to pressure one another, you get a lot of errors and nasty looking tennis.

Closer skill levels doesn't necessarily mean you're going to get longer rallies. In the case of these two guys, they're both essentially serve and volley players. That's a rush tactic that doesn't typically produce rallies anyway, especially at the rec level.

That might have something to do with it. It's odd seeing two hard hitting players serving and volleying which brings me to another point. At the 5.5 and above level, you would expect them to set up some points and not come to net every time.

And you'd probably see that if you were watching some baseliners or all-courters. I could definitely be wrong about this, but at least in this section of play, these guys were all-in S&V.

S/V tennis IS less than 3 shots.
Misses seemed to be lots of netcords.
If S/V tennis lasts 5 shots every time, it would be very low level S/V tennis.

These only last two shots and it's not exactly high level judging on how many points are lost by the person serving.

These guys are not quick enough to play pure serve and volley.

Hmm, whoever it was that mentioned they are players of similar skill level trying to win and therefore it can look a bit ugly is on to something I think.

I notice that, in the league in which I play, ther eis a bit of a spread of levels on my line. When I play against the best opponents (there is a young guy with a DI ride in the bag for next year, a former tour player and so on), I am anything but pretty to watch.. I scramble, lungle and hack my way to a result, usually a defeat in the 6 -2 - 6 -2 range..

However, when i play the weaker opponents (there are a couple of 4.5s playing up), or even the guys at my level (solid 5.0), I am way prettier to watch (so I'm told, anyway).

This is all about time and pressure.. The more of the former you have and the less of the latter, the better you are going to look. This is why a couple of 4.0s rallying co-operatively can look really terrific, and it is also why the two guys in the OP look a bit scratchy.

(it's also why Federer always looks so damn good, the game is usually on his racquet, even against Rafa it's the errors that seem to kill him..)

I guess this is all a bit obvious to many of you, but when I read some of these comments...

The one thing that everyone seems to forget here is that they are playing on indoor courts. That's probably the reason they are serve and volleying more. Indoor courts tend to be fast and allow players to play more aggressive and precise shots as well as serves. I would like to see these players play outdoors and then make a judgement on their ratings.

Not real 5.5. As a falling 1.0 I would have stepped in on their serves, first and second, make contact 6-8 feet in front of baseline for winners.

On my serves, safe third serve, an 8 feet kicker and come in to finish.

They are both 0.5s but solid bench mark 0.5. Notice how they consistently hold the racket on the skinny tube like end and hit the ball with the round part, with strings criss crossing the circular part.

As a falling 1.0, I sometimes get confused and hold the stringy part and hit the the tubular part with the fake leather wrap.

This is pretty funny :D

they are playing indoors. I don't think they serve and volley on clay. a lot of players S&V on carpet even if they are not real S&V players. If carpet was still around fed would probably S&V too (he did till the early 00s when they slowed down courts).

Some of you guys are just plain crazy. This is very high level tennis; my head is exploding from reading some of these comments.

Go to a major tour tournament - Miami or Pacific Life.... or U.S. Open and you will see that these guys in the video are nothing special - maybe 5.5s at best! It not how hard they hit; but how the tennis player moves and his placement of his shots that really counts! Take a look at Nadal or Djokovic or Federer for a sign of a good player in action.

Well this thread did say they were actual 5.5-6.0 players, no more, no less..... It's not like 5.5 is terrible, most players would kill to play at that level.

Always a nice ploy by citing Nadal, Federer, to diss 5.5-6.0 levels of play.
However, compared to YOU and I, 5.5-6 would foreever breadstick us.

Yes.
Using these three names at reference for good players limits us to a maximum of about 30 *good* players in world history.
And from their vantage point, certainly this video is low level tennis.

From my vantage point it's pretty impressive.

I enjoyed that vid. Thanks for posting!
Ditto. Good tennis and that beautiful facility.

Very true. And both are a little out of top playing shape - which will make people 'pull the trigger' a little faster.

Thanks, Captain Obvious. Of ALL the people who ever pick up a tennis racquet, how many get to the level of these two? I'll give you a hint: not many.

Don't obsess over the foot faults.
He has a weak serve, and the 6.0 needs the practice.
As a player, I only worry about footfaults if the server is winning every point on his serve.
Let the linejudges call the footfaults, I'm watching the ball.

Yeah. How can you watch their feet and the ball at the same time? I can't imagine, unless it's a very slow serve.

Play a big tourney.
Everyone spectating knows who footfaults and who cheats on line calls.
If you want or need the respect of your peers, just play the game, honest and fair. You will get better practice partners, and you will ascend in skills and rankings.
While the cheater/footfaulter just get's LESS and less good practice partners.

They might be smacking the tape and hitting just out when they play each other....
Believe me, when they play against you and me, they hit every ball perfectly and placed perfectly out of our reach.
You talk as if you know everyone and their game personally. Why in the world would you assume that you are the benchmark for the level of play on this forum?

This is a pretty good question......

although I find LeeD's antics amusing, as well as his now elevated mythological status, I am readily awaiting a response.

LeeD here....
Having seen good tennis in the past, I can say forthrite....those two guys are 5.5 and 6.0 players, both will double breadstick YOU every single time. neither will miss hardly any shots against YOU, and both are not playjng at their very best.
There are NO guys currently on this forum who would give them a tough match.
Ton, Fewipo, and the TW guy trying Futures are NOT regulary responding on this forum.

Derp.... lmao.
I play 5.0 plus guys every week. Nobody is double bagel the boss arche. But who cares. Its all old man tennis anyways. Those two in video would beat me I think but not dbl bagels.

I mentioned double breadsticks, not bagels.
I know you can get a game off either of them.
I think I can get ONE game off either of them in two sets.
5.0 guys would just get 2-3 games off those guys.
And when those two guys are "off", I'd bet I can get TWO games off them.

A few ladies would.

All you guys ragging on LeeD all the time, how many national tournaments have you played in? I don't know why he wastes his time here except for key-boarding practice.

this is what a real 5.5 and 6.0 players hit like..I can imagine 5.0's are not too far from this..its very humbling, all of you self rated 5.0's take a good look at it and reconsider your ranking

these guys have excellent 2nd serves. but it doesn't seem to have as much spin as I seen in the pros. It isn't clearing the net by much at all. as good as these guys are, I thought they would put more spin on the 2nd serves ?

Agree with Skiracer that this is what you will see in the later rounds of an Open Tournament. Not sure how many people are trolling but these guys are darn good...

What was I thinking,
Apparently you were thinking that because Lee played in national tournaments that therefore his opinion of the level of play of forum members who he has never seen play, is somehow credible

this is an internet message board, of course you're right!
You are very perceptive. This is indeed an internet message board and I am indeed right!:)

I never said Lee played in Nat Tournaments, I asked how many those who constantly rag on him have played? You're RIGHT again! That egg nog must be good.

By "all the time" do you mean whenever Lee posts something such as his claim that he can take his self-professed 4.0 level skills and take two games off of 5.5 or 6.0 level players such as the ones in the video posted by the OP?

What is the minimum number of national tournaments played needed before one can comment here on what appear to be unbelievable claims?

+1. In moments of 'clarity' he's actually admitted that these days he's really down to a 3.5 - which at his age is commendable. His 'Glory Days' stuff is amusing.

LeeD's trolling is funny for the most part.

Where else will you find a 3.5, who has a bum leg and can hardly run, that can take a game off a 6.0?

He's my idol.
