16 players listed on the current Wake Forest roster. Can't think of many schools with a big a number as that - Virginia and Notre Dame both have 14. Must be an ACC thing.

^^^ Here and there you'll come across a large roster. Furman comes to mind although I have not looked since Kelly Jones took over there. Not sure what the logic is for such a large roster. Maybe the tennis program gets financial credit toward their budget carrying addition walk-on players.

Maybe he was caught off guard by Monica's decision to sit out this year.
BTW, UNC women's roster is now at 8. Maybe this is a trend that reflects new economic reality ? I don't know, just speculating.

Women's tennis has more scholarships but they must be full. They cannot divide them up like the men can. So in order to get a roster larger than 8 you must acquire walk ons.

UNC has had as many as ten players in recent history (last season they had 9). This is the first time in recent memory that they have only carried 8 (as you pointed out, that number matches what a fully funded program can offer in scholarships, some schools can get add to their depth because they are desirable locations or whatever. On the men's side see UVA)
I believe Duke could have carried 9 scholarship players this season as a result of medical redshirting from last year.
So when a previous poster asked why Jamie (Duke's coach) would carry "just" 8 players it was a reasonable question based on last years end of the season when they went from 8 scholarship worthy players down to 4 plus 1. Giving up the #3 doubles court from the start, the # 6 singles court and, effectively the # 5 as well. That made for a difficult run in both the ACC and NCAA tournaments.

I don't think that medical redshirting last year has any effect on the scholarship limit for this year.

I was thinking that if a player misses a full school year of competition due to medical reasons, the NCAA allows that player a 5th school year to complete their 4 years of eligibility. In a case like that a team could, in fact, have 9 full scholarship players.
This came up earlier in this thread when I noticed that Duke had two incoming blue chip recruits (who were receiving scholarships per tennisrecruiting.net) and I suggested that meant Capra wasn't coming back.
I don't mean to harp on Duke's particular situation, I am more interested in understanding the NCAA rules.

The school must file for a medical red shirt, but at no pt can a team go over 8 scholarship limit. I assume someone on the team is a walk-on or paying for school via other means.

Per ClarkC from earlier in this thread:

"Injured players don't count against the total if the injury is judged by a doctor to be career-ending. Then the injured player can be carried on scholarship, not play, and not count toward the total of eight scholarships, per NCAA rules."

Monica Turewicz has told people she is taking a year off to recover fully from her injury. (Sounds to me like she intends to return for her two years starting in fall of 2014)

Both of the incoming freshmen show they are getting scholarships (tennisrecruiting.net)

So they lost one senior, bring in two freshmen scholarship players and drop one for a one year medical leave.

That's a total of nine scholarships.

I understood it the way you did, ClarkeC came up with an exemption, but this doesn't seem to fit here.

I suppose B Capra (or another player) may have given up their scholarship?

Heard from a friend whose kid goes to Duke that Mengel and Tahir might be injured. Says that Mengel might be out for the year because of surgery to repair a torn muscle from last spring and that Tahir hasn't recovered from an injury suffered at Pittsburgh Futures. Can't vouch for its accuracy, but neither played at Fab Four. We'll see if they play Tulsa.

I saw Mengel at the Fab Four Tourney - he was using an arm sling.

Thanks Tar Heel Tennis. Plus, neither Mengel nor Tahir is in the Tulsa Qualifying draw so I guess my friend's kid's report is probably true, which means Duke is in a heap of trouble this year, especially considering how poorly their bench performed in pre qualifying. In fact, if Schnur does show up in the Spring, I'd put UNC as the favorite in their matchup to go to the National Indoors.

I heard about Mengel's shoulder back in May and further confirmation here, so it's probably a pretty big injury.

I haven't heard about Tahir's injury

I thought that Schnur turned pro. I don't think he can turn up at UNC in the spring.

I heard through Zoo Tennis that he was coming in the Spring and he's still listed on UNC's roster. Whether he does go pro might depend on how successful the fall is. His summer has been excellent, his ranking is now 553, and the rumor is that the Canadians are trying to get him to go pro, so it's very conceivable that he won't be going to UNC. I remember some time back I heard that Milos Raonic was supposed to go to UVA, but the Canadians gave him a good deal, so maybe something similar is going on here.

Yeah, Bruno is surprising me, beating Bogaerts and Lupieri. Didn't see that coming after the dismal Spring he had.

Again, I'm not positive, but the dots connect. He played four clay futures in a row with the first two having to get through Qualies to get into the main draw. When you add up all the doubles he played as well, it's over thirty matches in a four week period. Maybe it's something like tendinitis. Maybe in his forearm since you say he has an unusual **** in his forehand mechanics. Anyway, he makes the USTA collegiate team, gets a $3K grant and the possibility of wild cards into Challengers and then hasn't played a match since Pittsburgh? Something's up, I'd say. I wish the colleges would let us know about this stuff. They do it for basketball, football. All it takes is a couple of lines in the stories they publish on their websites.

Duke still has the talent to be top 10, semenzato can play top 3 and levine is as good as mengel.....can't imagine schnur goes to school after his summer and how successful canada has been in tennis recently. 500 ATP and 18 years old, I think he should go pro......and if he does go why go to UNC, not like they are producing good players, they didn't even make the tournament last year

is there anybody good in ACC and contending for title at ITA in Tulsa ? or is it just another Dud of year ?

Which conference has won the last three ITA titles in Tulsa?

Championship match history

Make that four in a row. Maybe the ACC will consider allowing some other conference to win the ITA AA singles title soon. Maybe.

Trivia fact: Only four men have won the singles title twice in Tulsa. Two of them are on this year's UVa team.

Hmmmmm, this is interesting: At the Wake Forest tournament freshman Max Kan from Wake upset Esben Hess-Oleson the #1 of UNC 6-1, 7-5. He plays Josh Levine of Duke in the Final today. Looks like Wake has made another good addition besides Bogaerts.

Surprising win for Weigel over teammate Powell who had a really solid Tulsa event.
Ho bagels teammate Dumont in the 3rd set tiebreak. The Wake line-up will be very tough to put together, lot of shifting parts.

Big match tomorrow, Redlicki vs Schneider.

I was just looking over and trying to sort out the results in the Carolina and Atlantic regions. First impression is that the ACC will be very deep this year. Virginia did not stand out, although their two best players and two best recruits didn't play. Duke has slipped while UNC, NC State, Wake have improved. If Schnur shows up at UNC in the Spring, they will be very good. Brett Clark who made the regional final could probably play four. But if I'm Schnur, I'm asking myself which is the best development route. UNC or Tennis Canada? Right now I'm watching Pospisil play Federer in the Semis at Basel. Peliwo is in the two hundreds and I'm thinking if the funding component (coaching, clothes, travel, etc) is equal to UNC, I'm going pro. But who knows? Maybe he wants to go to school and see if he can up his value in a year's time? Maybe he wants a degree?

Is it confirmed that Schnurr went pro? His results haven't been as strong in recent weeks. Could be another knee-jerk go pro reaction like we saw from Fratangelo or Ward-Hibbert.

Yep definitely tailed off. Maybe he doesn't like Mexico and can only play in Cananda? Still, if Tennis Canada subsidizes him to the same financial tune as college, I'd go pro.

I think acc is improved this year. Going to be close between UVA duke wake and unc (if Schnur shows). UVA is down this year and have injury issues so I'll predict the acc win streak will end. Fsu nd ncsu and vt are the next 4 and could surprise the top 4. I'll go with those 8 making the NCAA tournament.

I do agree that Virginia will not be as good. The new batch of freshman do not seem to be as impactful as the previous years freshmen have been. They are still very good no doubt but they are not instant world-beaters like they have been in the past. But I still think UVA will win the league because the other teams aren't strong enough to take it from them. Duke will not be as good without Cunha. UNC could pose a threat but it all depends on Schnurr and even if he does chose to go to Chapel Hill, the depth of the Heels is not as good as Virginia's.

Wake Forest will be a threat. It's hard to predict exactly which order their line-up will be and hard to tell the top 6 even. They will go through a lot of shuffling and may be prone to upsets early because of it but will eventually gel.

NC State is vasty improved. They will go from just a feisty team to a feisty team with actual talent throughout. Horton is a big addition and Powell seems to have improved vastly/ Mudge is a solid player. Norenius will be coming back from injury after showing promise last year before getting hurt. Weber was a good lower line-up player and Weigel a bit of a wild card. They may have a strong enough top 6 so they don't have to play Beck "The human tinderbox" Bond.

FSU will be better. The loss of Jordan Kelly-Houston will be an addition from subtraction. Marco Nunez is a boost to the lower parts of the line-up. The freshmen Americans will battle for #6.

Notre Dame will make a big entrance and be competitive to many teams. I imagine there will be a lot of 4-3 matches in the mid part of the ACC this season, ND will probably be involved in a lot of them.

Virginia Tech will be about the same as they were a year ago. No real improvement in the line-up. Contini and Bjerrehus are both at their peak level I don't expect either to improve drastically still both very good players.

Clemson will take a step back this year after the good season last year. The top of the line-up will be weaker and the new pieces will have to find where they fit. The improved ACC will not help matters. Could pull an upset or two at home. Dom Maden will need to get back into form before the spring.

Georgia Tech looks to be even worse than last year's poor team. Spir and Segura no longer on the team and no replacements that are at that level.

Miami will be the same as last year. The main problem for Miami is motivation and they will need to find some desperately to get wins this year.

Boston College will try and win a point here and there,

This post assumes all players will be healthy, which of course rarely happens

ACC predictions for the year 2014..?

UVA won the NCAA's (barely and some would say due to a lucky but clear touching the net violation by UCLA on championship point for UCLA) over UCLA with IMO three top ten players (Jenkins, Domijan, and Frank). I am not going just by the rankings.

Losing Jenkins means UVA will not be as good, but we do return Domijan and Frank both two time winners of the All American, so we probably still have two top 5 players this year. No one has that much talent at the top unless Rola returns to OSU for the spring semester.

We will have a lot of new guys available, but we do return both Shane brothers and Styslinger. We lost our #6 guy (Uriguen), who will be easily replaced with one of the new guys or sophs. Most think Thai Kwiatkowski (spelling?) was one of the top three American recruits and some UVA people think he could play as high as #3. He has been hurt and has not played since the spring.

WF seems to be moving up and Duke while losing Cunha is recruiting very well. However, I just do not think either can actually beat UVA and will likely lose 2-5 or maybe even 1-6 when they play.

Right now Domijan is in a "boot" with apparently a broken foot and has not played competitively since last spring. Frank had to withdraw from the Knoxville challenger due to back tightness after winning in round one. If they are both healthy come this spring UVA will be favored to win it all. UCLA lost Novikov to the pros, which is sort of like us losing Jenkins. Had he returned I think UCLA would be the favorite.

UGA seems to be lurking and UCLA and USC will be very good. If Rola returns OSU will be very strong at 1 and 2, but I am not sure about their depth.

Overall I think the ACC will be slightly better instead of having just two quality teams as it has for awhile. I doubt any other ACC team will be a top 10 team, although Duke might be barely. I do think WF and UNC could crack the top 20 or maybe even top 15. New member ND is a an unknown to me.

If Schnur goes to UNC (he is on their roster page but not in their team photo, because they took that in the fall), and Chris Mengel redshirts due to injury at Duke, then I wonder if UNC will pass Duke this year.

UNC top 6 would be, in some order:

Brayden Schnur
Ronnie Schneider
Esben Hess-Olesen
Brett Clark
Nelson Vick
Oystein Steiro

Duke top 6, in some order:

Fred Saba
Michael Redlicki
Raphael Hemmeler
Jason Tahir
Bruno Semenzato
Josh Levine

Maybe I am just thinking "that lineup looks good by recent UNC standards." Or maybe it actually looks as good as Duke's lineup.

Schnur is the real deal....so is Schneider. Don't be surprised to see them play as a doubles team.

I have been watching them play this weekend, and am really excited about the upcoming season. Sam Paul really pulled in a great class this year!

I'm impressed he showed up. For a guy ranked that high I wonder why he would go to Carolina, not like they've had any luck developing pros, who knows maybe that's not his goal.

You're right not easy to develop pros.....just figured a guy like that would at least go to a program that made the NCAA tournament last year
