Juan Martin del Potro is the true hero of tennis.

Only he can fully take it to the big four. He is also a great guy.

Bring on slam number two for the man with many nicknames: the Tower of Tandil, Delpo, JMDP, John Martin and Delboy.

Every word is true!!

Hopefully he regains full strength next year. This year he has been injured a lot.. The win in Tokyo is a good sign..:)

I wonder if JMD can have a very fine finish for 2013. He has good seeding for Shanghai, has Berdych in his draw, who he can beat, and has back issues,

JMD is a bit fresher, and did well at Tokyo. It's time for JMD to win his first M1000!

Delboy up to #5.

Ferrer is dropping like a stone. If delpo can do some more damage before the end of the season the top 4 can be within reach. His lack of points at Aus and RG also leaves room for improvement.

I hope he does well in the near future, he's what only 25? young these days in tennis.

Good to see someone create a Del Boy inspired thread, 5 stars from me.

Love this dude. They don't make them like him anymore. Always think he's like the John Wayne of tennis. A gentle giant. Character in abundance. And a FH that takes no prisoners and seems to stem from... we know not where. :)

Joel, is the Tower going to be serving his Serving Bomb Sandwiches tonight?

The schedule is confusing me - I'm here on the East Coast with you so I always feel like they're "playing tomorrow". Or at, like, four in the morning.

Hopefully he can make the top 4 by the end of the year. He's finally overtaken Berdych and Ferrer is within reach especially with him defending Paris. Delpo just needs to stay fit! Not getting my hopes up but would be great towin Shanghai or Paris

DELPO into the semis!

He will probably take on Nadal, I predict a victory for delpo, this will start a great run of success against Nadal, with another victory at the WTF to come, and finally the triple crown of Nadal glory will come at 2014 Roland Garros.

Seriously, if Delpo stays injury-free, I think he's the guy with the best chances of being a real opponent for the likes of Nadal and Djokovic on a consistent basis. On (indoor) hard, I'd even say he can be better than these two.
Hoping for him to finally fulfill his 2009 potential!

Sensational play from del Potro today, he echoed everything I said in the OP and showed why he his the true hero of tennis.

Lets hope he can break the masters duck tomorrow. Anyone else think he can get YE #3?

With this win del Potro qualifies for the WTF in London

Hopefully Ferrer loses and DELPO can continue his ranking rise.

First player to win 4 500's in a calendar year apparently. Good stuff. Can't believe he still hasn't won a 1000 though.

A very nice thread :)

I envy you. Why is every player entitled to have a thread like this without trolling from rival fans except Djokovic. Every thread dedicated to Djokovic and his fans was destroyed and ruined by Nadal trolls. Really sad. :(

Thank you for your kind words Chico.

I agree it is unfortunate that Djokovic fans have to endure such trolling and abuse.

However if Delpo defeats Nadal at a slam or even Roland Garros a lot of abuse will come his and his fans way. After Juan defeated Nadal at Shanghai Nadal fans aimed at lot of vitriol at Juan and his fans. Saying he had no talent, an overrated clown and a ballbasher. Nadal is lucky Juan has had his injury problems as otherwise he would have sent Rafa packing quite a few times. Every time Juan and Rafa play the match is on Juan's racquet.

I hope you and Djokovic have a great year.

For those who missed the Tomic DelPo match. :)

Thank you very much for this.

Thread bump but not for good news...another retirement in Dubai. Is it the left wrist again and will it mean surgery similar to the right wrist fix in '10 that shelved him for a year???

I wish him luck...the game needs his talent!

This is so disappointing :(

Why would his left wrist hurt? weak wrist or faulty 2HBH technique?

It is hard to imagine a top 5 pro with a faulty 2HBH technique. I have never hit a 2HBH in my life, so I have absolutely no clue how much stress the left wrist undergoes with 2HBH.

Any other rightie 2HBH pro's in history with left wrist issues?

Heard during the commentary for the Djokovic match a reporter tweeted that JMDP said he feels the same pain in the wrist as he felt in the right wrist the last time, hope its not as bad as the last time.

I wonder why he suffers so much from wrist trouble, first the right and now the left? Is it down to his playing technique or something genetic perhaps. Either way, he is very unlucky with them!

Pretty sure they all use small grip sizes.

Nadal is the extreme but many of the big guys (with corresponding large hands) actually need grips built up to match their physique. An extreme example is Karlovic...P1 had to build grips to 5.25 inches! That's a 5/8" build-up from the largest stock size available. I won't give away Nate's secret to avoiding a drastic change in balance and overall weight.

As to JMDP's condition, it's not strokes or grip sizes as much as genetics and bad choices in string, tension and racquet stiffness.

Let's hope he can avoid the knife. That would be another long spell away from the tour in the prime of his career.
