Djokovic would win this in 3

Look, I'm very happy for Stan and I hope he wins it. But I really think Djokovic would easily have taken this considering Nadal's form. Seeing Stan finally take Djokovic down was thrilling to see, but in the end, for us Nadal haters, Djokovic winning that would have been the ideal outcome.

Djokovic has never straight setting Nadal in a slam even during his god mode run in 2011. So what makes you think he'd have done it here?

I concur. Novak is just flat out better than the guy got broken by an old fart who wanted to play scrabble.

It wouldn't be 3 sets but maybe a win in 5 sets. Or 4 if Novak doesn't choke in the 4th set in Aus 2012.

Of course, play that game of what ifs.
As irrational as thinking Djoko would straight-set Nadal is, you are entitled to the madness in your own head.
Just don't put us through that garbage by sharing it.

Just as well Stan took him out, else Djokovic will have been taking home a 3rd consecutive slam runner-up trophy on Sunday with the way Nadal is playing.

By the way, I hope Federer lovers don't give Djokovic the 'Soderling' treatment ... he needs you to continue cheer-leading for him! He might even send you free skirts!

LOL!

There are Djokovic fans like myself who are actual Djokovic fans, it's not all Federer fans who root for Djokovic. Most of them don't like him anyway, Djokovic is hated by every side of the earth. So get your facts straight next time.

Sir Solo ... I thought my post was very clear I was only referring to disgruntled fans of Federer that cheer for Djokovic? The natural Djokovic fans are awesome and I love them!

:)

Oh my bad... it's just that I have always seen you mention Federer fans when something is related to Djokovic. Obviously we Novak fans are in the minorty but there was a poll on who is the most popular Tennis player on this board. Federer was winning by a long shot and Djokovic had hardly any votes, but if there is a Djokovic vs Nadal match, all those Fed fans would vote for Djokovic by a milestone.

Just saying the difference between "Djokovic fans" and "HeCanKeepTheSlamCountAwayFromNadal" fans.

I think there are a lot of fans that like Fed and Novak for similar reasons. They're both strikers that play clean tennis. Nadal's will to compete is incredible, but his methods of doing so are exhausting to watch. I'll always prefer to watch an Agassi over a Borg.

Yes Djokovic always easily beats Rafa in slams. Rafa only leads the slam H2H 8-3. Nothing really in it. Very close. Djokovic always wins, even when he loses. If he loses it is because he was not at his best, but he still wins anyway - he always wins. Of course.

Agreed. I think we would have seen a very similar outcome to last year's USO final.

In fairness it's easy for you to say that because Nadal is in the final and Djokovic isn't. Don't forget that when it comes to playing Nadal, Nole plays much more aggressively because he knows he has to. You wouldn't have seen the type of pushing that you saw when he faced Wawrinka that's for certain. I'm not saying Djokovic would've won but by the same token you can't say for sure that Nadal would either. IMO it's really a 50/50 kind of scenario when these two guys play, even on clay.

Yep agree with that actually. Rafa does seem to get it done in slams vs Novak though, 2011 apart. In fact has he ever lost in a slam to Novak outside of 2011 (Jan 2012 AO I count as 2011)?

He just seems to find a way to win. Bizarre things happen, running into the net, missed smashes, etc - but Rafa always seems to find a way. Not sure whether that is mental or not, but Novak somehow finds a way to lose the really big ones. He is a brilliant player though and the only player on tour I as a Rafa fan fear him playing.

Stupid comment, how can you count AO 2012 in 2011? So Novak just did a CYGS?

Lol SOG couldn't even beat Stanimal, he wouldn't have stood a chance against Nadal. More to the point he doesn't deserve to play in the final because he lost!

You seem to be an objective Nadal fan but I might argue that Djokovic has tweaked his game and mind just to compete with Nadal. Nadal is like Davis Cup to Djokovic. Heck he was already talking about playing Nadal and their rivalry just after the Fognini match. That was the moment when I had a feeling Stan would take him out.
Novak is a mess right now that is for sure. :)

Nadal always finds a way because he's the better big match player and is mentally stronger, it's really as simple as that. If Djokovic had the same mentality as Nadal it's scary to think how much more he would've achieved but if we play that game we'd be here all day. We can't go by ifs and buts, we can only go by reality.

Ok so let's just dismiss that Djokovic had routine wins against him at Beijing and World Tour Finals where the conditions are very similar. I said Djokovic would win in 3 to **** people off....I don't actually think that. But I do think he would win. I look forward to Indian Wells and Miami, we'll see what happens.

Try 2 1/2, Rafa would retire to end the shame.

I agree, Novak fans who put their love of Novak before their hate of Rafa are very likeable indeed. F1Bob, Freebird, Hitman, etc. can dish out some smack talk w/o being mean spirited, a rare ability on TW.

The streak continues. Nadal has never won a match in a TT hypothetical. He's 0-232.

I had Djoko as a 55-45 or 60-40 favorite before the tournament, had they met in the final. Nothing they've done in the tournament has changed my mind on that. Nadal played two bad matches, but wasn't punished (he was, quote: 'sooo lucky!' to win that third TB though). Djoko played one bad match and lost.
However, the latter is his own fault and whether or not Djoko would win an imagenary final is a would have, could have. I think he would, but I don't think it would have been in 3. 4 or 5. And had Nadal won it, it would have been in 4 or 5 as well.

You're right I was making an extreme statement as I feel the thread is pretty stupid. SOG didn't get through unfortunately so to say he would win this in 3 is ridiculous hyperbole as he needs to get there first. I don't doubt that SOG would run King Rafa solid in any GS match, in fact I have a feeling that he may just get the RG crown this year, he was so close last year I really think he has Nadal on clay sussed like no one else has managed to. Whether he will be able to put it into practice is another matter.

Agreed Op def made thread tongue in cheek. Thank you for showing a bit of optimism for Novak Djokovic. I am not that optimistic right now with him. He seems to be lacking that focus. I saw him play Davis Cup here and he was an absolute monster. I want that Djokovic consistently.
But he was bound to lose he was on a 28 match win streak and there will be that time when you hit the wall. He was in that "have to grind them out and not rely on form" stage of a streak. Miami and Indian wells will be interesting coming up.
I enjoy the Novak Rafa rivalry when both are playing well.

I guess I ruined my reputation as a "Djokovic fan" for a "prevent Nadal" from getting slams" fan.... I was just very bitter this morning and at least I stirred some good conversation

I too enjoy their matches though the 2013 Roland Garros semi was the most stressful tennis match I have ever watched I think, I probably lost several days off my life in stress alone! Hey thanks for saying I'm a good fan I try to be respectful to all players. Novak has the skill and the game to beat anyone so hopefully he can get some focus and passion back - his streak seemed to be inspired from losing the US Open so perhaps his loss here will go onto inspire a great 2014.

I didn't see the Fed-Nadal match (yet), but Nadal wasn't playing all that well in previous matches. Against Kei and Grisha, Nadal was doing a lot of pushing, grinding and taking big advantage of choking from the young guys. I also didn't see Novak-Stan, but Novak was in stunning form against the likes of Mayer and Fognini, he was really hitting the ball very well on both sides and his serve was solid. Obviously I'm lacking all the information, but Novak looked much better to me during this AO and would have been the favourite in a hypothetical final.

But he lost, so it's pointless to say that now.

Whether Nadal fans like it or not, Novak is the only one in the tour who is able to make Rafa go the distance and make him wary, even he said it himself, there's a reason why Rafa doesn't like to play against Novak because they both battle it out till the end. And I can say the same thing for Novak too.

I am quiet sure Nadal fans don't feel confident when their boy faces up to my boy, and I feel the same way when Novak faces Nadal. It can go either way.

I was pretty damn confident last year at FO and USO.

There's very little separating nadal and djokovic so if novak did not lose to stan, the finals would most likely be a 5 set match that could go either way.......Novak is the only player in who can go toe to toe with nadal at the moment...
