Standing Long Jump

Apparently the standing long jump is used at many combines for pro athletes, so it is a fairly simple way to test your explosive movement.

I first tried it on carpet and found the landing a bit jarring. Today I went and tried it in the backyard by jumping off a concrete walk into a planter. I was able to rake the planter to get a nice landing spot in fairly soft dirt, which also allows a distinct mark for measuring. On my forth jump I got 8'6" which was significantly better than my almost 7' jump on carpet.

I'm going to track my progress in standing long jump as the year progresses and I start training for more power.

LeeD, you better start training! :)

Gonna put on shoes and go outside, wait 4 minutes please...
OK, I"m back. No shoes, just sandals tight.
1. 5'10"
2. 5'9"
3. 5'11"

Did not break 6'. I did stop to pet the neighborhood cat, so did some stretching. And I had to use my 4th tapemeasure, so did warm up my legs some.
As you can deduce, I have been sitting on this chair in front of the computer now for 3+ hours.

Oh, congrats on the 8'6". I haven't done that since 1982, or when I was 43.
Did do some duckwalking around my side of the net, full perimeter of the singles court, with the 15 year old I always talk about. Her lil sis won't do it.
She did it on her side of the court, on her dad's insistence.

YUP, 7th grade my first experience with it. I really wanted the blue sweatshirt, settled for the red because my pushup count was too low. And my standing vert, against a wall with a blackboard that had a rim sticking out 1", caught my sweatshirt ONE, and I got the reflex flinch after that.
8th grade, got the blue.
After that, it was team school sports, so lost track.
I did the 76 situps in under a minute.
Standing long jump, nobody beat me.
Rope climb, PeterShin when up 20' in 5.6 seconds. My best time, 18 seconds.
1/2 mile, or 880, around 2:08's. Best time at Gianini, 1:51.
Too bad they didn't do shuttle run.

What are you jumping into Lee?

I found landing in some raked dirt made it easier for me to go for more on the landing without worrying about injuring myself, which was an issue on the carpet. The other thing I'm doing is using my arms much more aggressively outdoors, and probably launching at a flatter angle.

Sitting in front of the computer isn't going to be good for your jump. You want to get those front hip flexors all stretched out before doing it.

It's all relative, but when I was in college, I bet I could have gone over 10'. I think the ability to aggressively load into the jump by swinging the arms down and dropping quickly into the jump probably is key to springing hard. Nothing like stepping into it, but it gets some of the same stretch reflex going.

I don't recall doing it in school in the 1980s, so perhaps it had been dropped by then. I do remember some sort of shuttle run and pull ups. I was fast on the shuttle run but couldn't do a single pull up.

That fitness thing, 7th grade for me equals around 1960.
I'm walking out the front door, after locating my 4th tapemeasure (that stays open), petting the cat, laying the tape on black asphalt street, and jumping.
Yes, arms are huge, that's how I once got to 9'2".
But at 65, not only do the arms not work, but neither do the legs nor the hips, nor any explosion.

Broad jump has something to do with fitness.
How many guys are replying? Or trying the standing long jump?

Exactly what I"m talking about.
You guys don't take this thread seriously, yet you look thru the health and fitness section for every new thread.
NFL combine, they take the 40 time, the broad jump, the vert, and the repetitive jumps over a standard set of barriers.
But you guys just say you jump to the moon, and refuse to test yourselves.
No wonder you're never satisfied with any decisions you make.

We did the presidential fitness test in Virginia in the 70's but we ran the 600 meters, not the 800. Lee, are you sure you guys were running 800 meters, 1:51 is pretty damn fast for an 8th grader to run a half mile, I knew college scholarship track runners who were running 1:46, 1:47.

Edit: Yeah, the all time California record for a high school Freshman is 151.03 set in 1993 by a guy named Michael Granville, so I kind of doubt that your buddy wearing Chuck Taylor's in the 1970's was running 1:51 flat.

I don't take it too seriously, but it is fun to see what I can do. I'd like to recover some of the spring I had when I was young. The ability to jump is definitely a use it or lose it type of thing. I realize now if I don't push myself, I'm going to continue to decline quickly in my ability.

Unlike the vertical jump and running the 40, the standing long jump is something that people here can try and measure by themselves.

However, Lee, you have to admit that you're willing to push yourself harder than most guys your age. A lot of guys even in their 30s would be worried about potentially hurting a knee doing a standing long jump. I was even a little hesitant about pushing it when I was doing it indoors. However, I'd expect that well see some of the younger guys weigh in to this thread over time.

Atatu, nobody did 600, you know that, I know that, and everyone else knows that.
Add to that, nobody used METERS those days, they used FEET.
As you know, it takes 39.37 or so feet to make a meter, so a 100 meter sprint is a LOT longer than a 100 yard sprint.
ChuckTaylors? Track shoes! The guys who ran fast had track spikes, and running shoes for cement use.
AP Gianini Jr High, the half mile was run outside the school, starting on cement downhill slightly, then uphill cement, rounding to a dirt flat and back down a dirt hill. Going down the final stretch, you could literally blow away your flat times.
Since I only longjumped for track, I never ran the dirt oval.

880 yards or 800 meters, the half mile in 1:51 pretty respectable for an 8th grader. I ran a 1:45 myself in 5th grade.

I mentioned, 7th grade softball throw, 180', about the time I was introduced to a softball, I was shocked how little distance it carried.

Standing start on creaky knees… 7 feet 3 inches.

But I fell back on my butt after I landed, so that doesn't count.

Second attempt… 6 feet 6 inches and no fall. Not bad for a geezer.

My reply to the original thread on 7 7 11. I was standing on the grass in the back yard.

Not bad tennytive, especially on grass.

The world records on this have been done into a long jump pit both for ease of measurement and safety.

When I did my jump into the planter I was jumping off concrete in Vibram five fingers and landing in dirt.

well, to Leed's defense, he is saying that his buddy run 1/2mile in 1.51 in 8th grade. As you know, 8th grade is NOT high school, so your citation about high school record has no relevance whatsoever. What, you never heard about pre-high school kids beating the best high schoolers in track? (/sarcasm off)

Yeah, he's always way off on times. The state high school champ at 800M when I was a junior won it in 1:56, and he, a senior (not an 8th grader), went on to a top D1 school on a track scholarship. I only remember it so well because he is my brother. LeeD is on the moon!

It has no relevance at all, you're absolutely correct. I'm sure that an 8th grader ran a 1:51 half mile in the 70's in gym class. It's just interesting to me that in every other state and school in the United States the test involved a 600 yard run (it was a national standardized test) except for Lee's school.

Gotta consider the configuration of our school, 2 downhill legs, one short uphill, and one flat.

These threads will get a lot less contentious when we finally figure out how to convert standard measures to the LeeDric system.

I'm pretty sure that 100 LeeDmph = c. 85 mph but I'm not sure about the distance and time conversions yet. We need a couple hundred more LeeD boasts for data, so I think we can probably get there in a month or so.

1:51 for 600 yards in an 8th grade gym class fitness test seems about right. I remember those presidential physical fitness tests and it was always a 600. But what's a measly 200 yards between friends?!

Rope climb.... PeterShin did 5.6 up, from a sitting position.
I'd average about 22 seconds, once made it in 18 seconds.
Did anyone else ever run/walk a 600?
Our 880 started at the SW entrance to the gym, headed N and downhill to OrtegaSt., up two blocks to the the street W of SunsetBlvd., then downhill pretty steep to the finish at the S entrance of the gym, not quite a full circumfrence.
Someone can look it up on GoogleEarth. If I could, I would, because it would show some secret surf spots that even today, less than 3 out 50,000 NorCal surfers know about.

Almost anything under 9 seconds, up a 20' rope, you don't have time to employ your legs, it's pure arms. PeterShin could make the top, touch the roof joists, and almost freefall back to the mat in under 7 seconds. He often hit the mat with a THUD.

r2473

^^ The idea is to climb with your legs in an "L" position. Coming down must be done the same and you must stay controlled (so try not to freefall down the rope).

I'm sure most of you can do it easily, but it's proving very difficult for me.

LeeD

I can't come close.
Peter would sit on the mat, hands just off, and then the clock ticked, he'd fly up with legs out horizontal, he'd stop his hands and use his momentum to tag the lowest part of the rafters, then drop down using maybe 5 total hand movements, and could land on either his feet or his butt.

Forgotton this feat until my 5 yo daughter climbed the rope and rang the bell at the top. Only 1st grader girl to do this 20 ft rope climb. These times/records that LeeD recites with ease are recorded in our grade schools' gyms. 1/2 mile runs too.

In elementary school, my older brother was the only one in the super Tarzan club as he was the only kid in the school who had climbed a rope to the top without using his feet.

I'm certain he didn't do it holding his legs in the L position that you see of guys who are very good at rope climbing. Given that I couldn't do a pull up until I was in High School, I wasn't any good at rope climbing. Last time I did pull ups, I was only able to get 9 with strict form. Then I have to start kipping them up like I'm having a seizure.

I like your idea of 'the LeeDric system'. I think I can help you with vertical distance conversion.

In this post LeeD stated:
Hi, Last week, I promised Cheetah that I'd go to the courts and try some tennis ball tosses for him, since he doubts I can throw. But I hurt my arm mudding the smooth walls at home, and didn't go to the courts till today.
Noon, 68 degrees, RoseGarden courts are about 400' above sea level. Took out 2 really old Dunlop balls, maybe 3 months old.
Stood at baseline, footwork like BenRoth.... basically 2 steps sideways. First toss, hit the top of the 20' high fence that is set 5' behind the backwall and 4' above the court. Second toss, over the fence, but NOT over the fence on the other side of that offset court, but hit the very bottom. [...]
This picture illustrates the actual dimensions, you know, the non-LeeDric ones. The picture is taken from youtube screenshots of some dude on those Rose Garden courts LeeD is talking about. I've added some measurements so you can see the LeeD (20 feet above the backwall) vs. actual height of the fence (about standard 10 feet). The backwall is indeed 4 feet high. Enjoy. it looks like vertical wise 1 foot LeeDric == 1/2 foot 'normal measuring system'

But at SanPabloPark, where I play now, the toss goes over the first fence, clears the net and most of the adjoining court to around the baseline to around 10' past.
You try throwing a tennis ball.

I seem to recall another post of yours where you have actually claimed that you have measured the height of that fence with a measuring tape, with a help of one or two guys. I'm not sure what to think about your construction skills if your measurements are that way off. Or even estimations......
Anyway, you do realize how given the above, and your admission that you may be just oh-so-not-too-accurate in various estimations, that others may a bit skeptical about various claims of yours........
