The Davis Cup QF match between USA and Sweden, McEnroe vs Wilander, John winning in 5?

Nailed it. If you want to know, the 7 plays into it because first, both Mcenroe and Wilander finished with 7 slams. Secondly, starting 1983, Sweden made 7 consecutive Davis Cup finals. I wanted to put a reference to the length of the match, but figured it would become obvious.

Nice work.:)

Ahhh 7 consecutive DC finals, I see.

I got the both 7 Slams thing just now, and indeed the match did go into the 7th hour so there is a reference to that too even though you didn't intend it.

I got this because of sbengte noticing the Swedish reference. I did think of Abba originally but not of Sweden.

The match went into the seventh hour. Wilander would end the year 1982 ranked #7. The match went the distance (Connors meme). The match occurred in the same year the Compact Disc was commercially released. Mats and John won 7 overall Grand Slam men's singles titles.

I see you got it. The seventh hour and #7 ranking play into it nicely, though I didn't know of those. I'm actually not aware of the Connors meme you mentioned. And you got the CD clue right. It's interesting how many connections pop up even without intention.

Here it is in a nutshell:

The only answer needed for any discussion on who is going to win any tennis match. ;)

Let's see what we've got here:

Argentina
Germany - a German choking / getting the yips ?

The burger and photoshop together with Argentina implies Nalbandian ? :)

Dont recognize the old gentleman on the left - Is that Stefanki ?
Is that cream/soap sud/cloud on top ?

You've found the countries. The guy on the left is a German golfer.

I get the Nalbandian reference  but that's not it.

The image at the top is lard.

I can't make much out of this, so how about:

Sabatini-Graf 1990 US Open Final

Yeah, this is exactly what I was going to say. This is what the bottom part of this riddle screams at me. Still trying to make the lard and darts/snooker/baseball references fit somewhere in there, though.

Edit: the Langer reference (that's who the golfer is, isn't it?) could tie with Rory Sabbatini, another golfer. and as Nathaniel said, Langer is German. Still no clue about the bride either, atm.

No.

Some very key clues have already been mustered.

There was a mention earlier about the yips and also, what appears at the very heart of this riddle? It certainly looks tasty.

To summarise:

The important countires, Germany and Argentina, have been found.

The connection between some various famous sportsmen has been found.

I've got the same issue. Langer and the German converses give me Germany, the bottom part gives me Argentina, and I just used the lard and burger to represent the US( sorry if anyone is offended). Any idea who the woman is? I just see it as a reference to America (considering she has a chubby face).

WARNING, the hint is moderately big.

If you need an extra image hint that relates somewhat to the heart of the riddle:

I recognise langer to the left, don't know about the picture to the right.
the argentina and the german reference I see too

stephen hendry is the most successful snooker player, the other two I googled (baseball and darts). some things they have in common:
all of them are commentators. in all three sports the main thing needed is a accurate and calm arm.

hendry has an MBE, the only tennis player I could think of having a mbe is sue barker - who also now is commentator/presenter at bbc.

the shoes are converse which probably leads to something. I cannot get anything from the lard (had to look it up plus I thought it was cotton)

also I think the burger refers to "hamburg" which could be where the match has taken place.

... still have to think a little bit more ;)

The link between the various sporting names has already been found, and it's different to the one you found.

Read on to find out what extra key piece of information was unlocked by kOa: that juicy hamburger does indeed refer to Hamburg.

The image of lard is ambiguous and I should have chosen a clearer picture of it.

Yeah, well, Argentina and Germany in Hamburg... do you really feel like suggesting the Monaco vs Haas 2012 Hamburg final?

I'm afraid that's the only possibility as far as Hamburg is concerned.(*)

Just like AF2493, I thought that the burger stood for America, ie the US Open... :-?

(*) Edit: there's also the all-Argentinian final of 2003 between Coria and Callieri, but it still doesn't feel as momentous a match as to warrant a riddle.

To summarise:

The location(German) for the tournament has been found.

The link to the yips has been found

The other country of importance has been found, Argentina.

Hints:

Sportsmen connected by having the yips?

The only part of the riddle that hasn't been solved in terms of relevance is the chubby Jelena Ristic and the lard.. fatness. Everything else has been solved other than these two points.

Bigger Hint:

The above two points are related specifically to the players who contested this match.

Reasoning:

Bristow, Hendry, and Blass all suffered from the yips, as did Coria. Coria happens to be Argentinian. As someone stated earlier, Hamburg from the hamburger and the Germany references. Lard, or fat, is the translation of Gordo, the nickname of Calleri, another Argentinian.

The Answer:

Coria def. Calleri - Hamburg 2003 Final (though not a momentous match, merlinpinpin, an important one in Coria's career).

-References to fat - Calleri has the nickname Gordo which in Spanish means fat.

-Argentina winning football teams, also 2 of them, suggesting two Argentinians but this was not important, only merely to get the reference to Argentina in general.

-German flags on the shoes and the hamburger refer to Germany, Hamburg.

-The sportsmen shown including the German, Langer, all experienced the yips, as famously so did Coria regarding his serve.

-As soon as the Hamburg reference is found, it's very easy to hone down what matches this riddle might be describing. The combination of Hamburg and the yips gives you everything you need to know.

I see merlinpinpin beat me to it. Kudos.

Yeah, well, I honestly didn't think it could possibly be the right answer. Callieri was very Nalbandian-like as far as fitness was concerned, true (what an arm, though), but still, the totally one-sided score kind of 'disqualified' it for me.

This was Coria's very first Masters Series, wasn't it?

yeah the 2003 vs calleri (argentina twice), but I still can't connect the butter/fat and the girl to the right.

kOa, if you want to find out the connection, I wrote up the answer (hidden via white text) earlier.

I have another ready just waiting for the go ahead and that everyone is satisfied that we can move on from this one.

read on: very well done on finding the answer as per usual. It was Coria's first of two Masters Series titles.

Not sure such a thing would matter anyway if the puzzle is chronological.

Hint: It is a sequence, which is what you had suspected anyway.

I have to leave for some work and will be here in an hour. Please don't give hints anymore. I will solve it once I comeback. :)

Well, if others come along and try and want a hint I will give a hint, just don't uncover the white text and show some discipline.

See you later.
