Murray skipping Monte Carlo to focus on Davis Cup

I think something must have been lost in translation in that article. I read it a few days ago, and still haven't worked out how MC could affect Davis Cup preparation when it is over a week later. I do see that it could be better not to play it as well as DC, to avoid overplaying.

The favorite, the usual suspect at MC gone. Now expect a surprise winner.

That´s kinda strange. Maybe Andy just doesn´t care about ranking points and preparation for the clay season.

This sounds like a bad thing.

If he needs match play under his belt and more ranking points, why not play both?

We know there is a good chance of Murray beating Wawrinka in the Davis Cup. And with Federer's bizarre on-again-off-again form it would be no surprise if Murray beat Federer too (Isner beat Federer at Davis Cup, in 2012 btw). So I think its worthwhile for Murray to focus on Davis Cup.

Usually it's players skipping DC to focus on other tournaments.
Not sure what Murray is going for though. Getting practice on clay is useful.

Given current form its not hard to imagine Murray losing to decent players, especially on clay.

Skipping Monte Carlo is not a big deal. It is way before RG and not mandatory, so unless you needed something to fill a gap or just loved clay or that tournament in particular, no need to play.

Myself, Monte Carlo is my favorite clay event excluding RG.

On clay, Murray could lose to Fognini, Seppi and Chardy back to back, given his form

He could - although current form was enough for Murray to defeat John Isner in his own backyard on clay and he is 2-0 on the surface versus the guys you list. There's also the fact that Murray seems to find another few percent whenever he has a Union Jack on his shirt.

Murray usually ups his form for DC ties. He takes them as seriously as the Slams.

Unfortunately did not happen..

2014 is definitely a bad year after the highs of 2012 and 2013. Hope it comes full cycle and we have a Rogi- Muzza Wimbledon epic final.

Didn't work. I doubt he is defending Wimbledon. Only all time greats have defended Wimbledon. Murray is not an all time great like Federer, Sampras, Borg, JMac and Becker. He is more like a Guga, only that he sucks on clay but will not win more than 3 slams tops in his career. I think he has one more slam left in his career. Maybe he wins the AO someday and completes the treble. Might end up being the male Davenport with one AO, one Wimbledon and one USO title and RG SF.

Muzz is severely lacking motivation after having pretty much achieved his life's dream. Back surgery didn't help either. I really think he should take some time off, perhaps after Wimbledon. It'll give him some time to think if his heart is still in the game. If the fire is still there, some time away will reignite it.

Wishful thinking can lead to problems, no?

I don't know if he is lacking motivation. What I'm seeing is basically a match fitness issue (slow starts, erratic serving) plus maybe a fragile mentality with all those Lendl issues going on in the background. He can still be brilliant, but at the moment he is not finding it all the time.

I hope he doesn't skip the whole clay season. He needs the match time, and needs to rebuild ranking points so that he can get #4 in the draw at Wimbledon.

Yeah, it's always a problem for Murray. If he wants Wimby, he needs to tank the clay season. If he wants nr1 spot he can't afford to tank clay season, but then he won't win Wimby...

Personally I never believed this mug.

Why to skip Masters tournament? It works when match is on someone's racquet, not for vulturing mugs.

That mug is the current Wimbledon and Olympic champion, a multi-millionaire who has overcome serious adversity in his life to become a globally recognised star.

You on the other hand would appear to be a no-mark, done nothing, been nowhere kinda guy who thinks he looks cool by branding multi-millionaire grand slam champs as 'mugs'.

Well done you.

Ah. The absence of any discernible grammar should have alerted me.

It's odd you know - I work alongside many Indian people and I've yet to meet one I didn't like. You know who is obviously the exception.

Batz, do you get a sense he is probably the latest manifestation of someone we know only too well?

Ramesh848 is not Annie. If Annie was around, he would be busy talking about Nadal, not Murray.

You just elevated your intelligence level to new height speculating Ramesh is Indian.

Great job bro.

I didn't say anything about Ramesh being Annie - but if you want to make that connection then who am I to stand in your way.

Off you trot now - I refuse to have a battle of wits with someone who is unarmed.

Yes. Yes. The reason Murray loses during the clay season is because he doesn't take them very seriously.........................

There probably is a bit of that. At this stage of his career, to a degree, he's just going through the motions. It's the old American, Roddick/Sampras-type attitude to clay. Why bother? When does Wimbledon begin?

Maybe a bit - but the biggest reason for me is that one of his biggest strengths (movement) is compromised on clay; he just doesn't move as well on that surface.

He says that with time and lots of practice, he can be effective on clay - but I'm not sure his body can take the investment of the hours he needs to be competitive.

But when you get right down to it - I couldn't care less if he never wins another match on clay as long as he is competitive at Wimbledon.

I think Andy should focus on defending Wimbledon and then look further forward to try and win the Australian. Then everything else extra would be a bonus.
