Paleo worked for me

1. Fruit juices are considered pretty bad by dietitians because of the loss of fibre compared to whole fruit. A caveman with a juicer is pretty frightening.

Absolutely. If you have to grind your food up, at least eat the fiber. Smoothies are a better option.

I agree Dman, my smoothies have a lot of fibre from the spinich, berries and bananna. But i drink a quart over 2-3 days since it's really high in natural sugar and does raise insulin levels.
In the 80's I had the "juiceman" juicer after seeing him in person. My drink was mostly carrots with apple and celery. I remember going to the friuit and vegetable store and the owner says to me after buying a large dufflebag size of carrots...."Are you feeding a horse with all those carrots"

I use Muscle Milk protein powder which i buy in in 6lb bags in Costco. I mix dry spinich leaves in a blender with a big scoop (34grams of protein) with whole milk, water, and fresh frozen bananas, berries that i keep in the freezer. It makes about a quart that i drink over 2-3 days for energy. I eat all protein sources with the soups: meat, fish, eggs, dairy. I just don't overeat. Just enough to feed 148lbs.
I live in Colorado but my wife's ancestery is Ukranian/Czech and she has sold her soups at construction sites but it's a lot or work to make big batches. Other great Italian dishes she makes are plantain lasagna and eggplant parmigiana with fresh tomato sauce . Right now she is making fresh strawberry strudel/crumble with almond flower and coconut sugar w fresh whipped creme..I am a lucky man. But really the food i discovered on paleo is so much better tasteing than fast food.
Ok thank you. I have been using some soy protein powder earlier, whats your take on that? Lately I had some stomach problems that perhaps were milk related, at least it stopped when I lowered my milk consumption. I need to clarify that.
But your smoothie is not so far off the one I used when I ran three barefoot marathons in recent years: Plain youghurt, soy protein, linseed oil, frozen rasperries, banana, and soy milk enough to make it drinkable, all blended. I was not too confident with sugarwater (Gatorade), and just supplemented with water and fruit.

Hey Povl, That's cool that you ran barefooted like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abebe_Bikila
The muscle milk protein i use contains whey protein, i read some negative stuff about soy protein so i went with what the experts said. I am far from an expert in this subject. Did you drink yours right before exercise?

Yes he just ran well double as fast as me, but that is okay... The course in the Copenhagen Marathon passes the same point twice at app. 20 and 30 kms, so I had the smoothies in two ½ liter bottles there. Perhaps a little conceited, I would call it Povls recuperation underways-smoothie.
Yes, if I am going to use proteinpowder more regulary, I might have to substitute the soy.

Wow, i'm impressed Povl. Don't think i could ever finish a marathon in sneakers. i use the protein smoothy mostly for recuperation. But seldom ever during workouts or matches. I guess i'm afraid the milk will upset my stomach.

I think I run so slowly/relaxed in bare feet, that the stomach is no problem. I even eat breakfast pretty close to the starting time without problems. Being used to eating at pretty close intervals, I like to have something more substantial (allthough liquid) than sugarwater. Without it I would get lightheaded/tired/uncomfortable. If I played tennis for as long the problem would be the same. Once my stomach feels empty/I am hungry, I find it harder to concentrate. Perhaps it is just me.

If you're really a paleo adept you go hunting the wild animals down, and gather the nuts and fruits in nature- or whatever is left of it.

I'm the same way Povl, close to a match i either have a more vegetable carb based soup, or homeade yogurt (not sure why the yogurt doesn't bother my stomach?) or plain baked sweet potatoe..then a few nuts and raisens and i'm good. If i know it's gonna be a long match, i might nurse a bannana. But i bring my smoothy on ice for after matches and it works great.

The unorthodox in my idea are the proteins (and the oil) I guess. Seems to make me feel better than going too long on just carbs.
Povl,I forgot to tell you, i also use almond butter (i don't eat peanut butter) with apple sauce and whipped creme for a great prematch snack..lots of protein too

I do have unsweetened organic peanutbutter in the house (not the least for my daughter). But I seem to have noticed that peanuts are not as good for me as other nuts. And I understand that biologically they are not really nuts.
And the snack sounds tasty.

Apple sauce and whipped creme are paleo?

Yes it's definetely a paleo blueprint, I make my own homeade apple sauce from real apples and whipped creme from heavy creme. But they sell good organic unsweetened applesauce now and a spray of storebought whipped creme has very little sugar.
This is the natural organic almond butter i use

Its impolite when invited for dinner to bring your own bag of carrots and ask the host to prepare them, because you can't eat what the host has prepared. Lets not be ridiculous, everybody has to cheat occasionally unless you live in a Paleo cave. :)

Don't worry, you wont fall off the Diet by cheating occasionally! I have stopped eating Bread, altogether.
But on occasion, I found it was extremely hard not to wolf down a Fresh crusty banquet bun with butter.
Maybe it had something to do with the ambiance, ..... Paris, Sidewalk Restaurant, Red wine, obnoxious beeping of car horns, and just being there enjoying the moment!

great thread! good read!

But actually, you do not need to prepare the carrots, you could just eat them as they are.
Edit: But yes, you cannot have your cake and be paleo all the time. But being knowledgeable and aware of (and curious about) the impact foods have on you physically and mentally is interesting and motivating imo.

I get this picture in my mind: all the dinner guests, eyes transfixed on me, at the end of the dinner table gnawing on a plate of raw carrots with a hint of parsley garnish........ Ehhhh!, what's up doc?

If you had the guts, one could replace the non paleo part of the dish (bread, pasta, rice etc) with greens. Personally I prefer to focus on avoiding or limiting the grain/sugar at hand.

For those still interested in this subject. Precision Nutrition laid out a brilliant objective review of the Paleo diet itself.

http://www.precisionnutrition.com/paleo-diet

In Summary, don't buy into the evolutionary argument, you would be surprised at how well our body adapts to the modern diet.

However, that doesn't say a modern processed diet is a good thing.

They studied tribes in Africa, South America and even the Arctic who thrive off a diet more paleolithic than any American can dream of. Turns out, they all have their pros and cons, but we do see some health indicators that favor the diet.

You don't have to entirely ditch grains in favor of veggies. Most evidence that grains are "bad for you" has been extensively debunked.

Thats not to say the Paleo diet is bad. For those with digestive issues, diabetics, celiacs or desiring to lose body fat, Paleo is solid.

It really comes down to a "to each his/her own" method of dialing in their nutrition. The concept is simple and effective, but you don't have to exclude grains like most Paleo proponents seem to badger on.

It seems wrong to copy a diet just because our ancestors did it. Wouldn't it be better to copy the diet of the healthiest and longest lived humans alive today?

Whoa, whoa, whoa...that's like...too much common sense for something you read on the internet. :)

Substituting grains and (processed) sugar with greens and fruit does not sound like an unhealthy direction to move in to me.
But this:

is more or less ok with me. But what does "You do not have to exclude..." mean? Even though you do not "have to", there can be differences in the health and wellbeing consequences you experience, I would reckon. I better read the article, hm...

I am not sure how objective their review can be, when they (he?) themselves are professionals in the field of giving nutritional advice.
I think everybody can more or less agree that the dogmas about what was eaten 10.000 years ago can be discussed. And everybody more or less can agree that what is important is how a suggested way of eating works today. And in this respect, the review is more positive than the headline "The Paleo problem" would seem to suggest:
"After 12 weeks, the Mediterranean group lost body fat and saw an improvement in markers of diabetes. Four of the nine participants with diabetic blood sugar levels at the beginning of the study had normal levels by the end. That’s a very good result and must have made the participants happy.
But those in the Paleo group fared even better.
They lost 70 percent more body fat than the Mediterranean group and also normalized their blood sugars. In fact, all ten participants with diabetic blood sugar levels at the beginning of the study reached non-diabetic levels by the end of the study.
By any estimation, that is an astonishing result.
Now, these volunteers were suffering from mild, early cases of diabetes. But a second study of long-term diabetics showed that a Paleo diet didn’t cure them but it did improve their condition significantly.
Other research has found:
The Paleo diet is more satiating per calorie than a Mediterranean diet.
The Paleo diet improves blood pressure, glucose tolerance, and blood lipids."
And:
"The Paleo diet may indeed be the best plan, but it’s hard to know for sure without direct comparisons that match macronutrients and calories."

You're a good tennis player. I bet you'd kick the crap out of LeeD (another poster that is about your age).

I also bet you frustrate the hell out young buck power players pretty often.

As one of those players who gets frustrated by comebacks style of play, I agree with this.

But facing a shirtless 64 year old man means you're playing somebody who means business, you look great dude, keep being awesome!

Thanks man, Sometimes my style works to frustrate younger guys..I did win this match 6-2,6-3..I wanted to play a 3rd but he refused..That is the irony, he's in his early 30's,and i can outlast him..I don't play USTA leagues so i'm self rated but i know my opponent plays USTA 4.5 level.. Professor LeeD's would probably rate me a 4.0 which is cool with me..

Thanks so much Tyrus, i was always a decent player but following the Paleo blueprint i dropped 25lbs which took me to another level of endurance. It's been exciting and a pleasant surprise to be able to improve a little at this age.

Wow, do all us old farts slice and use a super low service toss?

Yes LeeD, As you know all us guys from the 70's hit 1 handed slice and can't reach up anymore for a high toss:).(they both take the least amount of effort). The guy i'm playing was the guy i told you about who used to play at Albert's Park.

Yes Povl, powerful the Wilson Steam 105s and Gut/ Zx strings are all geared so i expend the least amount of effort/energy but get power and spin...You need some control though to make it happen.

I play with a Wilson ROK (90", 18/20). OK when the wind is in my back, or at no wind at all. I ought to give myself a little rest there, but am a bit stubborn.

Wow Povl, that is a "players" racket if i ever saw one..But maybe it's time to move over to the "dark (old geezer's) side" and use an oversize...:)

Ofcourse now my thoughts are on the RF 97 autograph. Because like Federer, I am getting older, just 20 years more so. Well back to the subject I guess.
