cheap nat gut?

Anybody tryed the cheap gut from:
Naturalgutwholesale on the bay?

Any good?

I got a set of black and a set of natural to try but I'm torn on how to string whether to do mains or crosses with gut, with msv hex as the other.

Also if I do msv mains and gut crosses I was going to do 54# poly 58# gut should I keep it the same if I put gut mains.

Wondering the same thing... his reviews on the bay are good and plentiful. Only a few unsatisfied with the quality.

I tried Mamba gut and it was OK. Snapped a set stringing and they replaced it, and quite a bit of variance in gauge, but they played well. This is half the price!

Anyone tried this stuff?

Just ordered some of this and some global gut. Gonna compare prior to and after stringing and playing.

Honestly hoping to have success with it as I'm enjoying the KLIP Legend 17, first gut I have tried.

I am not a string breaker but I broke the string within a week.

In my opinion, if anyone wants to use natural guts, it should be at least Klip or pacific gut.
My set up was/is natural gut main and focus hex and last more than 3months with Klip or pacific so klip and pacific is more economical than cheaper gut.

I'm always careful with products like natural gut tbh.
Concerning the hybrid: ALWAYS put gut in the mains!!
I've explained this something like 20 times today so I'll make it short. Gut main and poly cross has the lowest friction and greatest snapback (implies spin). Gut cross and poly main has the highest friction and lest snapback (Little spin). Also gut main is more playable, holds tension better and has better feel.

i actually find cheaper (poorly waxed or insulated) guts feel much better than the Babolat 16g heavily coated natural guts.....

now...quality control is an issue..i know. but cheap guts feel fine, if not better.

A few months ago I purchased some Global Gut and it was much better than I anticipated. Compared to the Mamba Premium and some other econo gut my buddy bought off of the bay, it was much more even in gauge throughout, with a coating more similar to higher end gut.

It still was no Babolat VS, but I was impressed. In a hybrid setup with the 16g Global Gut in the mains, and 16g SPPP in the crosses, I got well over 20 hours of play in my EXO3 Tour 16x18. To put this in perspective, I normally break my syn gut crosses when I have poly mains, in under 10 hours.

I think the naturalgutwholesale is the same stuff my buddy bought off of the bay which was less impressive. Granted I only bought one pack of gut from Global, and I might have just gotten lucky with a really high quality set.

I also bought some natural global gut 16G a few months back, and it played very well with no early breakage. I got 3 sets for $26 shipped off the bay which is unbelievable value.

From visiting the website, it looks very much like Emerson natural gut -- made in India. Also, his description of the NG process reads very much like what I have read in trade magazines (RSI/Tennis Industry). I also think I the pics are "stock" photos from other sources, not the South Asian factory that likely manufactures this product. The legitimate, first-world manufacturers of natural gut can be counted on one-hand if you have a digit missing.

i think it should be ok as long as you dont string it too tight. it might be second hand gut that didnt meet the standards of the original distributor (either visually, tension breakage, etc..)

Ive never seen a black "premium" gut and I know with polys darker colors are stiffer.
Is this "premium" enough for you?

The recommended maximum tension is 52, so I think you shouldn't go higher.

The cheapest natural gut strings are Babolat VS Touch and Pacific Tough Gut. These guys just don't break! The Bab gets a bit more action on the ball.

I looked at the old listing from when I got it and it said 55# I don't know why they lowered it.
So I strung it in the mains @57# and msv focus hex in the x's @53#. I had to play it at my normal tensions before I go low.

Considering how it played it was ok. I think the comfort and control were a little better as well as a touch more power but I'm not sure if this was from the string itself or just how much heavier it was than my normal set up? As soon as I steped on the court I could feel a bit more headweight.
I was having a little trouble hitting consistently but was penetrating the court a bit better, I would assume most of this was effects from weight difference.
Considering spin I didn't notice a large improvement if any at all on groundstrokes but slice was much easier to control and access.

My only complaint about the string was stringing, the only other gut ive ever strung was titan and that was a cross in a hybrid and this strung fine. This black gut would not fit through some of my grommets and caused me about an extra 30mins stringing and weaving the poly as a cross wasn't too enjoyable either it was almost sticking to the gut. After stringing it was almost impossible to straiten out the stringbed so I was already annoyed and just left them alone. Its not a stringing experiance I want to go through every week so they better last longer than that if I like them.

I will play again this evening and any more coments will be posted.

Yeah I seemed to have added about 3.5-4 grams when I strung up a full bed of 17g Klip Legend.

I Like the string but I had already matched my sticks with synth/multis.
The NG stick is and swings heavier now, by a noticeable margin.

Not sure yet what I'll do about this. when the arm feels good I like it, when the arm is tired it's tough.

Thanks for the report. I would be very interested in the subsequent ones.

Personally, I don't like Klip Legend 17. It played a little stiff at the beginning and once it settled and softened up, it didn't give me enough pop with the shots. Serving was OK but the ground strokes lacked power. Maybe I should've gone for higher tension, I don't know. But from my experience, Klip Legend 17 is no match for Babolat VS Team 17. Even Titan 16 played better until it broke, I think. I'm interested in this new cheap gut, but if stringing is such a problem, maybe I should reconsider.

Well maybe head grommets are tighter than other brands? I am not a gut expert by any means but before I string another raquet with it I will drill out my grommets just a touch so it will go easy. The string is just a pinch thicker than my pathfinder awl so had to cut it on edge and push through with nose pliers. Stringing the crosses wasn't any harder than any other time weaving poly I just dont like weaving poly I'm spoiler with multis.

Been using Global Gut 16 Gauge as part of my gut/poly hybrid for almost a year. They work great at low tension and feels more lively than the more expensive coated natural guts (Babolat). Durability is about half of what premium gut strings have, but it's not an issue for me since the poly cross is usually dead by the time the gut main breaks.

just got a couple sets of natural 16g in the mail today. the naturalgutwholesale stuff.

the sets are mildly kinked and at least on one length (they come in two pieces per pkg) the strand has/is coming untwisted.

I have not opened them yet to look further but i think there are more spots like that (untwisted).

I'll try it, but i won't buy anymore.

Hope Global looks better, I have a set on the way.

Ditto this remark. I have tried every "cheap" gut out there. Not worth stringing up. IF you can get it strung without it breaking before you hit even one ball with it. Stay with the two brands mentioned above here and save yourself $$$ and headaches. Each one of the guts that did make it off the stringing machine broke pretty quickly. One lasted about 5 practice balls, the longest lasted about one set. Junk!!

Interesting, I have used Klip Legend coated/uncoated and I am currently using Global Gut/Poly hybrid and find the durability (~20 hours) rather similar, but the Klip Gut last a bit longer. I favor the feel of Global Gut which has less coating than the Klip Legend coated gut, the Global Gut has more power.

i strung my very first ever gut on my gamma x-2. got a set of Global Gut. strung it in the mains at 54# and PP Blackout in the cross at 57#. I took extra care and slow pulls on the guts. took me 1.5 hrs to finish (i'm a noobie stringer). then i let it sti for 2 days before hitting the courts. i even sprayed silicone lube on day 2.

went to hit with it today for some singles and doubles play. I like it!! feels great on my Steam 99(not the S). the spin and bite is more than good for me, and net feel is great, serves are good. But that's only 1.5hrs of play. Jury is still out on durability. i'm playing more tomorrow.

my only other experience with gut is Wilson Champion's Choice on a TW PS85. just wow!!

All budget guts potentially have this issue.

I've tried some in the past, and was sure to string in low 50s, definitely under 55 lbs. In those cases, none snapped prematurely and they played fine.

But, stringing them can be a chore (gauge inconsistencies, unravelled spots, sticky coating through grommets, easily kinked, etc), and thus for me it wasn't worth the cheaper price because they also don't last nearly as long as Pacific tough gut. Tough Gut is my standard longevity gut; you can string it over 60 lbs, and it lasts a long time both in terms of durability and playability. When I compared the two, my cost per hour of play time was close to equal, so then the premium gut became a no-brainer, with the added bonus of being much easier to string.

I don't string above 52 lb, so lucky me, and I never had a problem stringing Global Gut :)

I've heard tell that there is a God, but until i see it I won't believe it.

The cheap gut is working well for me so far. I fear that perhaps there are many incompetent stringers that may not take the proper care when stringing, but it certainly doesn't SEEM as nice as the primo guts nonetheless. Perhaps I too will run into problems with it a some point, we'll see. Plays nice though.

There also is first-world "cheap" natural gut. I picked up a half set of Titan 17g (Klip's seconds) for $10.99 at TW. I strung it up tonight in a hybrid with SPPP. It was the last racquet I strung so no special attention other than making sure that I did not kink anything. In fact, I was in a hurry and used the "high" setting on my machine (other than the first cross) and rushed the whole job. No problems.

There were a few "blems" -- tiny imperfect spots. But the string shows no serious warts.

Visually, it was crystal clear, very similar to Bow Brand natural gut. The 17g was perfectly consistent in diameter and did not fray at the string ends/tips. Easy to string -- thoroughly modern coated gut. No discernible difference between stringing Titan and top shelf stuff.

I will play with it tomorrow on a Pro No 1 Black Granite. The only difference between stringing this and my current fave Bow Brand is the fact that the Bow Brand remains crystal clear after being tensioned and the Titan ghosts the entire length of each piece of string that is tensioned, while the Bow remains clear. The Titan turns opaque.

This is good to hear. I had not researched Titan and didn't know it was Klip "seconds". Maybe I'll give it a go. I have a couple sets of the "wholesale" 16g brand left (so far, so good), a set of Global 16g (it looks of better QC than the "wholesale" stuff by far) to try and a set of Pacific Classic 17 (saving it for last, if/when I swear off the India stuff).

Currently have some "wholesale" 16 crossed with Co-focus 1.18 in one stick, plays great!

I've tried Klip Legend 17 (currently using it in one stick). Installed it full bed, then it seemed to stop sliding and became quite "sticky", getting locked into place. So I cut out the crosses and crossed it with Red Devil 1.19. So far it's still working great.

I'm not much of a string breaker and play lots (about half the time, at least) of doubles (so half as much "action" on my strings lots of the time).

UPDATE: I have played approximately 10 hours actual on-court time with the Titan hybrid. Most of that has been non stop singles hitting. The Titan feels great and plays great, irrespective of its price. It is less firm than my reference gut, Bow Brand 17g but not springy like the budget Emerson natural gut. Not as stiff as the current Babolat VS Team. It shows normal wear, no unusual or premature fraying.

I have since strung up another hybrid with the same results as described in my original post. I am guessing the few negative reviews about this breaking during stringing is due to operator error, or the lemming effect of posters who have not actually used the string. After all, any yutz with a couple of hundred dollars to spare and most of their digits is a "stringer" these days.

This is a high quality natural gut whether using the eyeball test, tactile inspection or on-court evaluation. It is a steal for the $$. In addition to my post, take a look at other user actual TW user reviews for this string for other opinions.

Global gut is very good for the price when strung at low tensions. I get the thickest gauge (15L ?) and string at ~50 lbs. It does feel much better than Babolat Tonic. It is very soft and has minimal coating on it. Gut from the classical era.

If you need higher tension (55-60+ lbs), try something else.

Yeah I like the springy feel of Global Gut way more than some of the heavily coated guts (Klip Armored Pro, Babolat VS BT7), although Global Gut doesn't last as long as the heavily coated gut strings. :(

I'm stringing the natrualgutwholesale 16g at 56-58 (mains only) with no problems YET. I'll be switching to Global and trying the same in the near future when I use up the last of the former.

I have more GG on the way, but the one set I already have appears to be of better quality than the natrualgutwholesale stuff which is quite gummy yet slides on the poly crosses (red devil 1.19) just fine.

I also ordered one set of 17g GG to try. GG can be had quite cheap when you buy several sets at a time, making a hybrid setup come in at 6-8 bucks (with Pros Pro from a reel).
