I've seen him play in NYC. He's a lefty. Nice grounds strokes. But no put way shots. Most of the year (2013) he was not in the top 100. I don't think.

Donald Young needs to spend some money on different coaches, not stay with his parents as coaches. I mean, he needs a different type of thinking around him, mix things up a little.

He's 24 which is shocking but he's still the 6th top ranked american. Which tells you how bad american tennis has gotten.

American tennis has gotten worse, because more money is poured in football and basketball on every level high school,college, professional. There are not as much children in general, who want to go all the way to become a professional tennis player in the US. Actually John Isner and Sam Querry weren't even confident they were going to play pro tennis. John had to 'flip a coin' between basketball and tennis and went to college. Sam Querry wanted to go to college as well. They don't have motivation like European players do, since they have been young.

Hard to say, but even though i knew i'd never be pro at anything I made the switch from other (team) sports including football to tennis in junior high for similar reasons (early-mid 80's). Team tennis of course, but you get me...

I'm not. They're both fine, but not great, ATP level players. And, both were hyped at one point as the next big American champion.

I didn't say I was surprised Harrison isn't top ten. I said I'm surprised he's not ranked higher than DY. I get he's not an exceptional player on tour, but I do think he has a better game then Donald. He certainly seems to work harder or take his game more seriously anyway. I think Jack Sock will pass him this year as well.

I realize that, and I completely understand why some people would be surprised that DY is ranked higher than Harrison, since as little as a few months ago, Harrison was in the 60-70 range and DY had dropped down into the 150s/160s. Further, I know many people believe Harrison works harder, has better coaching, has a better attitude, etc.
I'm just saying despite all of this, I'm still not surprised that DY is ranked higher than Harrison. Certainly not from a talent level - they both have some nice things about their games, they both have some obvious weaknesses. I just never thought Harrison was that much better. As, I didn't think DY was that much better when he had his USO 4th Rnd run a couple of years ago and got as high as No. 38 or low 40s, while Harrison still hadn't really emerged yet (he is considerably younger in "tennis years").
Knowing how this level of player can catch a hot streak and shoot up the rankings only to tumble back down the next year, I'd never be particularly surprised to see one higher than the other.

This is true. A good run isn't really indicative of a good player and the rankings can not correlate sometimes. Fair point.
That being said I guess my point was that I think Harrison is a better player but true, they're pretty comperable. I just really don't care for Donald Young.
Couldn't care less what that guy is using for a racquet, it's something different than it was six months ago and that's usually the case. Good enough for me. Now Fed changing sticks, this happens like once a decade and he's arguably the GOAT. That's a reasonably interesting conversation to have.

Tennis is a non revenue sport. why would you play a sport that nobody watches. If you take away the family the number of people that watch high school tennis is a handful. Sans the big Div 1 school you don't have a ton of people to watch. Even soccer is more dynamic then tennis is in the states. I love tennis, but if I am a top athlete tennis would be a the bottom of the list. The team sports are better overall cheaper. According to the USTA, the cost on the tour is 140K. Tennis a niche sport.

The 2 juniors I watched playing the final of a tournament at my indoor club...16 yo boys...were about the same size I was when I was 12. Meanwhile when I play pick up basketball I constantly see kids who are 16 and are already 6'+.
Any kid with any size and athletic ability at that age is playing one of 6 other sports.
Tennis tends to be the realm of mildly athletic rich kids when it comes to people taking it seriously in the US.

Yeah, I would tend to agree with that as well. The only intriguing part to me is if it actually is an ESP stick or a PJ.
I watched him live and his side to side speed is ridiculous. He has the feet for the game, but I guess not the head. Regardless, his spin generation was really nice on serve and he likes to roll the ball a lot, so the ESP factor makes things somewhat interesting.

Anyone who watched Donald's 5 setter with Seppi saw that he's got the potential to be higher than his current ranking, but has some bone-headed mistakes he tends to do. He shanks more than a typical pro does, which I think is caused by his tendency to roll in forehands off his back leg instead of really stepping into the ball.
He should add additional coaches to his team other than his parents... Donald Sr. and Ilona clearly aren't getting him where he could be.

He will move up in the rankings after his 3rd round finish at the Australia Open. I think he will be 3rd or even second best in the top rankings of Americans. Should be in the 60s. I think Sam might drop because of his Australia results this year.

My country has the exact same problem. To me, the overall standard of tennis talent has gone down and not up. If the US was as strong in tennis as in the past, I doubt some of the players we have like Nadal or RF would have dominated as much. I really believe the US tennis has become weaker and NOT that the other countries has become stronger.
McEnroe (at 50) almost beat Roddick when he was top 10 in the world. It is proof that the US tennis is not what it used to be. I know a veteran in his 40's who beat a top 20-30 player in my country...partially to his style, but largely due to tennis having gone backward.
RF is excellent and one of the all time greats...but very over-hyped and overrated by people who seem to have forgotten how strong tennis was at one stage. There was no ninetendo back then...kids hit the courts and not their television sets.

I have some connections to the right people. Your buddy might be able to help. If not, let me know and I'll cut a set off my reel for you. I've had mine for a little while so I am not sure how much they are pushing out currently. It is a nice string, a bit stiffer than TB Soft while still being more comfortable than original TB. I know Kal-El has had some other in development stuff from them recently and so have I. Definitely some great stuff in the works!

I was told that they are far off from release,but silver rough (amazing) is coming in the fall. For me,the green string is just a tad too soft,the color is awesome though.
What's interesting is that DY seems to be switching from regular TB to the green one off and on. He used the green last year and in the AO he used silver, I saw him in Houston and he was using the green prototype,and in the clay challengers he used TB,and he's back to using green now.

Yeah I don't know that the green string is a top priority for them. To me it seems like TB original and Soft are probably doing well enough that they don't necessarily have a burning need for a 3rd string in that family.
I have pretty much switched full time to Silver Rough in recent months and I love it. Will be a winner when it's released. The rough multi is interesting too.
Donald has definitely switched racquets a lot lately but he has stuck to either Tour Bite or the Green.
