Dimitrov has now won a title on every surface

2013 Stockholm on indoor hard, 2014 Acapulco on outdoor hard, 2014 Bucharest on clay, and now 2014 Queen's on grass. Very impressive stuff from the 23-year-old. He is truly a threat on all surfaces. And it has all happened since he hired Roger Rasheed as a coach in October 2013. Really good work from Roger and Grigor! What do you think this means for the future?

He won a title on every surface in one calendar year. Only 6th player to do so since the 'banishment' of carpet, I believe.

Ironically....

2013 Monte Carlo
Nadal d Dimitrov 6-2, 2-6, 6-4

2014 Rome
Nadal d Dimitrov 6-2, 6-2

could someone explain the irony?

6-1 6-3 6-0

He has a long way to go before he wins the biggest tournaments in the world on all three surfaces in a calendar year- Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open, which only Nadal has done.

holding all those 4 titles at the same time is even better... congratulations to grigor ! :)
the queen's final highlights were really great...

Dimitrov is what like 23 already, Nadal already has a career golden slam when he was 24. What does it tell us?

yeah but dimitrov to me is overrated. All of the big 4 were better than him at his age, he shouldn't be compared to them, which I have heard of a lot. Hes not the next number 1

And who is if not the guy that won 4 titles for 9 months? How manny players did that recently - Djokovic and Nadal. How blind you have to be not to admit that Grigor is very likely to become top 3 in the future considering his results. Since 2012 you always see his steady progress in mather of results, ranking and perfomance.

And Federer at 23 had one Slam and one master title, not that MUCH better considering that DImitrov could achieve that till the end of the season and the top players now are way more tough than 2002-2003.

Dimitrov is wayyyyy overrated, just look at his slam results wtf???? Only 1 QF appearance in this year's Aussie Open and couldn't even beat Nadal with blisters, aching back and knees and got embarrassed in four sets. What a joke that people are hyping him up like the next GOAT contender.

I don't think it's unreasonable to think Dimitrov is overrated. He might just be a later bloomer and the era might just be harder to break through in, but it could just be the case that his generation is not so strong overall and usually the great players have made bigger strides by the age of 23. It's easy to try and find reasons for why the generation broke through so late but one instance won't necessarily make a trend.

Having said that, I do hope there is truth to those attempts at justifying the absence of that generation of players and that there is a great one in there somewhere.

again. Why cant I have my own opinion?

Don't worry about it. Quite often posters here equate being reasonable with having the same opinion.

You're welcome to speak your mind, that's the point (and beauty) of a forum. Plus, you've given some valid points as to why you think the way you do, even if it's a tad bit on the anaemic side.

There is this assumption that tennis is so physical now that it's hard to break through at younger ages. Until this sort of pattern is repeated, we can't be sure that it will become a trend or if, after two rather strong generations, we're just witnessing a substantially weaker one.

People want explanations but we should probably let this ride out. It seems Dimitrov got to work late on really maturing physically and building himself up, or at least Roger Rasheed gives this distinct impression. If he does become great, he may prove to be an unusual case.

Time will tell.

Thought you're a reasonable poster until this one. Wow.

How is that post unreasonable? It's more likely that he won't ever be No.1. Guy has gone past 3rd round only once in slams. Has an awful 12-15 record in GS. 7-28 against Top 10 players.
Yes, he could win 10 slams and become No.1 for 4 years but atm reasonable statement would be: 'Dimitrov is never going to be No. 1.' Just like slating Djokovic as a potential 5 slam winner would have been an unreasonable thing to say in middle of 2010.

You can. Everyone can. I just said I used to think you're reasonable. The post wasn't, so now I will treat your posts with a little more cynicism.

ok, by the way I think dimitrov is a fantastic player but I don't think he is good enough to be number 1 in the world, that's all.

Another garbage post. You infer a thesis nobody else has proposed, then go on to refute it proving only that you dislike the player.

When did anyone here say Dimitrov is better than Djokovic, Nadal, Murray and Federer? Never.

When did someone say that at his current age Dimitrov had achieved more than the abovementioned? Again never.

When did someone say that Dimitrov will win 40+ Slams? Also didn't happen.

The thread title is about a very real achievement. If you want to pretend it's meaningless, I ask you, why post here at all? If Grigor is losing first round in ATP 250 tournaments, I can understand why you'd say he is overrated (at his ATP ranking), but clearly he is not. He is part of a very elite group of players leading the tour in wins this year. Gone past the 3rd round of a Slam once? Wow, burn him at a stake.

The hate campaign against anyone that is not Nadal/Djokovic/Federer has turned this place in a shambles. Again, when I see such drivel as the post quoted, it just makes up my mind to treat the poster's comments with prejudice in the future.

And everyone is talking about how the big 4 is done, how Del Potro is always injuried and so on. In their absence someone would take their places and right now Grigor is leading the pack with Nishikori and Raonic.

I reckon its the other way around. Kei and raonic are leading the pack with dimitrov stil needing to prove himself at the slams a bit more.

tl;dr. Russel Jones, you have been blinded by fanboyism. Try being reasonable when talking about 'Dimitrov'. Not that 'FreeBird hates Dimitrov' **** again. In fact, if you cared to read my posts in last 2 days, I have written that Dimitrov will win Bercy this year. But f*** it, you are way too biased and overly sensitive when it comes to Dimitrov.

Delpo will be No. 1 for more than 2 years. People are forgetting that his wrist problems will not be a matter of concern once he returns.

He was never troubled by right wrist issue after the surgery. We can expect the same for left wrist.

But Raonic is inferior to Dimitrov in every deparment except the serve and Grigors display during Queens make me believe that on serve he would be just behind Milos in the coming years. And he won their last two meetings, Yes Raonic breaked earlier on the tour but right now this means nothing because Grigor closed the gap for 8-9 months. Nishikori probably has 10 retirements in his career so far and that is just too much for someone expected to dominate the mens tour. Yes he can make a strong year or two but unless he cuts the injuries they would always stop him from reaching his optimum form and he is 2 years younger than Dimitrov. And even if Nishikori remains fit in the next 5-6 seasons do you really thing that he would be the only number 1 guy, that he is that good to remain undisputed.

Yes but he needed two years to return to his 2009 form and that is a lot of time.

I don't think people think he's overrated compared to his rank, just that they feel the hype for the guy is unwarranted and that the calls from the pundits that he's a future world #1 are questionable or at least premature.

Well. We'll see.

Again, you are forgetting that the problem was right wrist in 2010 (involving the hand used for both FH and BH). He had to start from the scratch. So,definitely, it took him 2 years to to go back to 2009 like form. This time, He he has already started hitting FHs again. His right hand will be suffering from rust rather than injury. I say his FH will be back to 2009 form in 3 months once he shrugs off the rust. BH will take time, But then again, he was playing with pain in left wrist since 2012 and still managed to crack Top 4.

Yes but people this time last year were asking "where is his title", "He is not even reached a Slam QF", "he has not even reached a master SF", "he is not beated a big player except Djokovic"

You can see how much this has changed in the past 9 months and now people are asking other question with a higher bar.

And now he is 4-1 in finals, this is a great sign for a champion mentality

Don't worry. When he wins a Slam title, the same people will say: "But he's won one. At his age so-and-so had won XX Slams." You can't argue with internet trolls. It's their lifeblood.

All true, all true.

I've got nothing but praise for the guy right now, he's won a slew of titles over the last half a year or so. He's doing a great job.
