Thoughts on Fed's racquet

How so though? This year has been better than last year. He should be going backwards all thing being equal - he's older, more young guys are stepping up and delivering... His seems more confident and even if he's having a relatively poor run his his forehand he seems to be serving better then he has for quite a while.

A bigger racquet was never, ever going to dramatically improve his game. But he was likely never after anything more than a little more power, a little more stability and a little more usable string-bed. All of those things he likely has got. All that matter is whether he's really used to it. Only he will know that. Any of us making claims to know are talking complete and utter ****, you especially given your inability to accept any notion which you don't already agree with.
You can't compare to last year since he had a back injury for almost all of last year. This year, he's injury free.

The problem with this whole argument though is that there are so many variables (age, racquet, injury, opponent) that NOBODY will ever "win" the argument because there is no right answer. We can only speculate.

Considering that, I think the best time to compare his game is at the 2013 AO and the 2014 AO given that is the last time Roger was playing close to 100% with the 90. Although, even that is like comparing apples and oranges. All we can mostly confirm is that Roger is serving better than with the 90 (even in his prime). Aside from that it's also hard to compare considering he has changed styles since adding Edberg to the coaching staff. There's just too many variables.
I'm not so sure 2013 AO is such a good comparison point. Federer has had a back injury since 2012 Wimbledon. Remember the MTO during the 4th Round match against Malisse, which he left the court and came back with a black compression undershirt underneath his white polio shirt and which he wore for every match afterwards to keep his back warm?

Also, his first serve used to average around 120mph with the 90 but now is down to around 115mph with the new 97.

Yup, the commentators couldn't stop talking about his black undershirt during every match afterwards.

I dislike the way you phrase that. By the way, Dimitrov still uses a 93" mid and he is one of the "young guns".

Midplus racquets are not some kind of god-sent miracle that automatically improves one's game to an incredible extent.

It only is unusual for pros to be using mids nowadays as they no longer grow up with them. The juniors pushed towards professional tennis start from a young age onwards with mid plus racquets (obviously because they cannot handle mids at their age) and then they continue playing with what they are accustomed to. Pretty simple and nothing to do with superiority or inferiority of one or the other.

Still lots of young 'uns playing with the 90s, specifically PS90 2014 and previous iterations although I must admit they also have inside their bag--larger racquets!;) I myself isn't inclined to make the switch for bigger and more powerful (and much stiffer; 70 RA) racquet.

I cannot confirm nor deny that stat, but speed is not the only determining factor for the serve. I'd say look at the following stats:

-Aces
-Unreturned serves
-1st serve % in

Overall, this year he wins way more free points on his serve than he used to. Honestly, there is almost no arguing that point. (but I know you will certainly try)

Just havin' fun AND because I really attests to the more control oriented racquets as opposed to the powerful ones. Supplying ones own power still reigns supreme in my book.;) Nothing more.

Actually, Fed did go back to the 90 at the end of 2013. Then he went back to the 97 and has stuck with it since.

What sensible person here would presume to know better than him what is best for his game at this point?

And why argue with someone who's only interested in racking up an "I got no life" metric like a big post count? Just leave the donkey to its meadow.

Sure you don't have that mixed up?

Edit: his 1st serve speed in 2013 Wimbledon was 111mph. 2014 seems to be higher, lowest one I could see was 114mph with a number of matches averaging 115mph.
Even his win in 2012 had his first serve only at 116mph in the final.

And doesn't matter and is hardly a great test. Young Fed w good back and younger shoulder versus early 30's, already had back issues and probably worried about a relapse. That's our @bp...
Definitely. Also, I remember a year or two ago ESPN crew were saying that Serena had a higher speed average than Murray and how amazing she was etc. But then cooler heads prevailed concluding that Murray had much more energy in his serve, just that the spin makes it seem slower on the radar device because it measures speed in a straight line.

No, I do not. Go back to before he had back pain (prior to 2012) and you'll see that he used to average around 120mph on his first serves.

Even when he last played Djokovic at Wimbledon in 2012, he averaged 119mph on his first serves despite back pain and having to wear a black compression undershirt underneath his white polo shirt. In the final this year with no back pain, his first serves averaged only 115mph using the bigger racquet.

Heck, when he beat Djokovic at the French Open in 2011, Federer's first serves averaged 122.5mph.

Huh? Did you read my post?

In 2012, WITH SEVERE BACK PAIN, he averaged 119mph against Djokovic with his Tour 90.

In 2014, WITH NO BACK PAIN, he averaged only 115mph against Djokovic with his new RF97.

In 2011, WITH NO BACK PAIN, he averaged 122.5mph against Djokovic with his Tour 90.

Sure seems to me he serves faster with the Tour 90 than with the RF97.

I know, another thread about this.

I'm convinced that Fed's new racquet has not helped his game, in fact his game has suffered. Sure, his age has played a role too. Even so, it is not a fault of the racquet!

Federer, to my knowledge, has never played competitively with a larger headsize than a 90. He even played with the Pro Staff 85 before switching to the 90. For him to go to a 98 is a huge break from what he forged his Pro game on and what he is accustomed to playing competitively with.

Players like Djok, Nadal, Roddick, Agassi, Pam Shriver, Chang, Safin all used larger headed 95+ racquets and were accustomed to playing with them and molded their games to these racquets in their formative years, just like Federer, Courier, and Edberg. For them to switch to a racquet smaller than 95 would be detrimental, as would the latter to a significantly larger.

Of course hindsight is 20/20, and sometimes you can only discover things after you've tried them. Such is the case with Fed now. Just my opinion.

It has only hurt his best shot, forehand. With his 97 his forehand now is a lot of topspin, giving better consistency but slowing the pace down. This is simply fact and has been documented. In the past his forehand was like a ball being shot out of a cannon, in addition you couldn't read it, now you can.

Everything else, backhand, serve have all got better, so it's a trade off.

Personally I have switched back, after trying everything, to my 90. Aero 100, Blade 98, 6.1 95, all great racquets, but for me I just don't like doing the topspin all the time game. With my 90, yes, I hit off center once in awhile, but my accuracy is insane (Sorry, wrong section)

I'm certain it does. You've been deluded by your midsize racquet agenda for many years so trying to convince others by expecting people to believe in amazing coincidences and cherry picking stats only serves to demonstrate the loneliness of that delusion.

Does it really matter how much faster or slower his shots are? He's playing great tennis right? Sure, some of you might not attribute his recent success to the racquet switch, but Federer does to an extent. By downplaying the impact of the switch, you're essentially telling Federer that he is wrong.

Huh? I chose the two most recent Slam matches between Federer and Djokovic and one before Federer had back pain to show the difference.

Why is it so hard to believe that Federer can serve well with a Mid? That was his biggest weapon over the past 15 years. Heck, even the best server of all time used a 85 sq. in. Mid.

And there have been many others on this board who have been saying over the past week that Federer used to serve faster with his Tour 90.

Also keep in mind 7.7 is actually 8 If your an engineer. If your a normal person 7.7 is 7.7. you would think an engineer would be more precise and describe 7.7 as 7.7 and not round up to 8. Like I am glad Boeing doesn't just round up the size of their screws that hold the engine on the plane. Can you see the mechanic... we are out of 12 mm bolts. BP the engineer answers: no worry. Round it up to 14 mm. It's fine. I'm am engineer. It won't slip off really.

scary that a persons life hinges on a 3 or 4 mph difference in federer's serve speed between different racquets.
Um...isn't the topic of this thread the differences in Federer's play using the two different racquets? And when discussing the differences in serve speed, shouldn't the differences in serve speed be discussed?

Scary that a person's life hinges on making snide remarks about me. :???:

No, not really. serve speed did not change but MORE ACES and MORE holding SERVICE games easily than before is what matters for Federer. he is holding easy to conserve energy and spend more energy to break serve. That is why he is playing so much better.

And who said 7.7 is not 7.7? Oh you did! Because you can't do math and said 7.7 is 7, just like the guy who wrote that article.

Besides, 7/90 is 7.8, not 7.7. But you wouldn't know that either. 7/90 = 7.778 or 7.78 or 7.8 or 8 depending on how many decimal places you want to use. But as a whole number it is never 7, like you think it is. I guess you failed 4th grade math.

i watched some videos of federer playing with his new racquet and his old racquet. it may be true he gets more stick and precision with his smaller head, but i think he realizes its getting too demanding to compete day in and day out as hes getting older and there is less margin for error with that smaller head. also considering his age, his results seem to be equal or better compared to his old frame imo..
