So not Benneteau tomorrow? :(

Actually now bookmakers say Benneteau/Gasquet vs Lammer/Chiudinelli
But it doesn't mean anything, I would be very surprised if Lammer/Chiudinelli is the swiss pair tomorrow.
Benneteau? Maybe... that said, Tsonga has a big ego, won't be surprised if he wants to play with Gasquet :( I want Benneteau though.

Anyway, if France wins the doubles they win the final, no way Tsonga doesn't beat Federer if Monfils did so easily.

YES WE KNOW. You clearly don't udnerstand what a ;-) means. The Swiss are stained with French ejaculations of culture.

Federers French is perfect - you do know Basel is like 5km from the French border. The airport is shared with Mulhouse, France and 1:2 the airport is in France and the other in Suisse - there is a line painted in the middle of the terminal marking the border.

Many many in Basel speak French - TV, Radio and Newspapers are printed in both French / SuisseGerman

No one said you can't cheer for whoever you want, just that your reasons are idiotic and the players you're cheering for are clowns.

You are very annoying.
1. you bring politics in this discussion
2. why are you so aggressive towards other posters?
3. who are you to decided about other people reasons?
4. probably you want us all, to cheer for your favorite player!

All above in one word: you are clown.

The beautiful thing about tennis is that you can be from anywhere and support anyone else because of the player's style, personality and appeal. It doesn't matter where anyone's from. Tennis is about break international boundaries. Davis Cup takes that away. It makes it all about countries again rather than people supporting what they like.

Nice. ^This^ post is a lot less dramatic than your post out how dc destroys what tennis is about.
This is beautiful about tennis, yes. It is what tennis stands for....for you. Cool.

For me, davis cup does not destroy a thing. It is uplifting for me. I Often go to ties.

I personally can separate the two (atp, davis cup). I can also separate college tennis, my own tennis, the tennis of my kids, etc.

I am an american who likes tsonga, richie, stan, rog and baghdatis wayyy more than sock, isner, ginepri, querrey, blake, roddick, fishy, dre, pete, bg, arias, chang, jimmy and mac.

Davis cup has not destroyed a thing for most of my tennis friends, either. Sorry it is destructive for you.

I'd echo these sentiments. I cringe on occasions at the nationalistic behavior of crowds at tournaments where players are not playing for their country but themselves. I'm not referring to the natural support which generally followers a local player, but the flag waving and stupid nationalistic support chants.

Davis Cup is a little different, however, given that nationalistic nonsense is already over the top at some matches where players are competing for themselves, those same nationalistic idiots take it to even further extremes during Davis Cup. I have been appalled and ashamed at Australian crowd's behavior at times during Davis Cup. Very ungracious.

Nope, I'm calling you (Vero) out for this too. There could be 10 perfectly valid arguments made, and because you have no good rebuttals for them, you just ignore them and maybe nitpick one thing out of the post that you can argue against.
Cheers. Sadly, it's quite a common tactic by quite a few posters.

I really hope it will be decided by the Monfils-Wawrinka 5th rubber.

H2H is 2-2. Never played on clay. Could be a real thriller.

Rumours say the doubles will be Tsonga-Gasquet vs Fed-Stan
I would like to see that one - could be a stunner! And congrats on Le Monf today!
"How much of that is down to his back injury?"
Mats Wilander "I think NONE!"
Lol!, Mats is quite a good commentator, but he really, really dislikes Fed for whatever reason. Maybe because Fed's game is the complete opposite to Wilander's own?
yyyyyeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh :D
If I could put my monetary interest over my cheering for Fed, I could have been a rich man today - 3.00 return on Monfils victory ;-). Hope you earned a bit
You're right. Hating on Fed is just an added bonus!
;-)

@Gary, Urundai
sad that it needed this match for you to be completely convinced about Sunday, but glad that you are now. Hoping for a GOATING Stan all weekend and that the Swiss can somehow win the doubles tmr.

I don't get the sense that Mats dislikes Fed, he just doesn't handle him with kid gloves or awe. He said today on air that Federer is a really nice guy.

I don't know. My impression is that he likes to take a dig at him quite often - for whatever reason. And smaller stuff like today saying something to the effect that the injury played no part whatsoever in Fed's biggest DC defeat ever.
He can praise him too, but it's rare and some of the digs have been quite big - most famously the no balls-comment (that was pretty funny though).

^^Yeah, Mats does like to take at dig at Fed but I think Mats has a contrarian streak and likes to stir things up.

I don't think it's personal dislike.

Wilander praises Federer one minute and criticizes him the next. I think many of these players as great as they were (and Wilander is an all time great) are envious of Federer's consistency and longevity. Many of these guys had it all and threw it all away too early (Wilander to coke, Becker to women, etc.)

But I have to say that Wilander's comment he made with respect to Federer not playing with balls vs Nadal was an accurate one, sadly.

Countries and Borders were created by Human Beings. I don't have to subscribe to it. Being born to parents is biological. Just like being born on Earth. So if you make the argument about the planet I agree. But about countries? LOL please.

Being born to parents is biological! So what? Whats special about it? And about planets? Whats really distinct about the planets and countries, just the fact the former is natural and later is artificial. So somehow, continents make sense to you but not countries, and planets too just because the separation looks natural to you. Being born to specific parents is also more of emotional than scientific. Any kind of demarcation is meaningless, be it natural, scientific or human made.

Typical Vero in this thread, really hard to read her posts. Missed most of the action so I was reading this thread to catch up. Watched most of the Wawrinka vs. Tsonga match on replay and will watch the Fed vs. Monfils after, too bad Federer couldn't do more, bad back  That coupled with Monfils focusing on clay in bo5 is not easy.

Hoping for Roger and Stan tomorrow for doubles, it's the only shot the Swiss have at it.

Last time I checked being really happy to be born to my parents didn't make me prejudiced against anyone else or start any wars. Nationalism on the other hand...

Exactly! So if USA went up against those guys who would you be supporting? It's kind of a double edged sword there. Supporting people and connecting with them should be personal not where they hail form. That's really my only problem with Davis Cup.

Not sure. case by case. Great moments each time i have been to a tie. I.e. I wave a us flag while cheering for great tennis. Gotta be true to your school (beach boys reference, Lennon).

They say the ability to deal with two opposing feelings is what separates us from the animals.

I do not get into olympic tennis. Nice, but no real tradition. Davis cup? 115 years of love, man. Deep.

Why should you be really happy about it:confused:, and then you go around objecting people who are happy about their nation as if such individuals are responsible for the war? Now, if only you would take care of poorer people than your parents, I can accept your criticism of nationalists because such poorer people deserve your support more than your parents, isn't it:???:

Equivalently, if you are ready to abandon your healthy kids (born to you) in favor of the sick ones in the orphanage, I will accept your criticism of nationalists. So, "family" is that Achilles hill for you what you as "nationalism" in others. Hypocrisy smacks everywhere, isn't it:???:

It was never about providing relief or taking care of someone who isn't related. The whole basis for this discussion was Tennis is a sport where you can support anyone you want regardless of where you're from or where the player is from. It breaks international boundaries. Davis Cup takes that away. You can be happy about your nation all you want. But that's all that is. Using parents as an analogy doesn't work because state isn't a physical, tangible object or person to which you have a physical connection to. It's just following of a sect of ideals. I don't see how that's even remotely comparable to what we're discussing. I personally choose to feel proud by what I've worked to achieve. Not something that was just simply handed to me.

why not Fed/Stan?

a doubles match clearly is easier on the back, and they mix well together.
unless Fed is suffering, etc..

^^They must play Federstan in dubs. Not that miracles don't happen but Lamar and Chiudinelli would be out of their depth.

but they're not.. flashscore shows it's the no names that play.
i hope they surprise and change that.

so if the Swiss take the dubs, and get a 5th rubber (if at least Stan wins),
what would be the chances?

heninfan99

They can change line-ups up to an hour before the match.
Well, I'm rooting for France so Federstan can sit on the bench. I'm okay with it :) but it would be a bad move for the Swisse.

I don't know if it's been posted yet, but according to streamhunter its going to be Benneteau/Gasquet vs Chiudinelli/Lammer for today's doubles.

This is the official lineup. Ofcourse that shows up everywhere, until Luthi announces at the last possible timeslot that it will at least be Stan teaming up with someone.

It doesnt tell us everything, but the DC tweeted a picture saying Clement was watching Federer and Wawrinka practice this morning. In doubles formation
