After winning his first Davis Cup title in 2014, Roger Federer's draw in 2015 isn't half bad. Should he give another go at it?

No. Federer's time is running out and he needs to take it easy on his body if he is to play for a few more years. He needs the rest more than he needs extra 5 set matches in the Davis Cup. He won one "for the guys" but now he needs to focus on his own career and finishing it on his own terms.

Like the previous poster sais, no. He can't be playing so many matches and especially B05 matches. He needs to start saving himself for the more important titles.

He has got the DC now, leave it. I'm sure Severin and his teammates will understand his choice as he is not 25 years old anymore.

I hadn't looked at the 2015 draw before, it's interesting. Switzerland definitely have a great chance of reaching the semi-finals at least. If they were to get there and face Serbia and Djokovic, they would have home advantage at least.

Now that Federer has a Davis Cup title and with his age I wonder how committed he will be next year though. Assuming Switzerland beat Belgium in the 1st round, they would face Canada or Japan in the quarter-finals. I believe that they haven't faced either of those countries in the competition before, so in both scenarios the host country would be decided by a coin toss. I can't imagine Federer wanting to travel to play in an away tie in Canada or Japan the week after Wimbledon.

Interestingly Federer has more victories in live singles rubbers than every other great player from the open era. In fact excluding players like Baghdatis who have racked up a lot of wins in the zonal divisions (although he still deserves a lot of credit for regularly committing to play in those not so glamourous ties with Cyprus), I think that only Nastase has more live singles victories than him in the competition in the professional era.

Well I think he should. This season Spain is out and if I understand the draw correctly they would host the last three rounds. SF is a potential "final before the final" with Serbia but it mostly depends of the fact if Djokovic would play or not.

Swiss have enourmous quality in their squad and they should rack up some titles before Stan and Roger retire.

yes, marcos deserves credit for that !
and he needs 1 more win to tie borg's record for consecutive DC single wins...

the podium so far:
  • borg, 33
  • baghdatis, 32
  • becker, 22
i hope he'll get this record. :)

No, he needs to focus on RG. Defeat Rafa in RG final and then retire with a bang.

LOL, he is not going to beat Nadal at RG.

He should focus on one more Wimbledon.

And no, I don't think Federer should commit to DC in 2015.

That is loser mentality. Champions don't think like that. We have to believe the impossible even against all odds.

People are saying for years how it is impossible for Rafa, Nole, Fed to win stuff and yet they are wrong.

I will never stop believing. I rather aim for top and come a bit short than not aiming at all. Even if you miss a bit, aiming higher still gives you more chances, since we don't know where the limits are.

Although, I agree W record and 8 W and 10 finals is tempting. It will look a lot more prestigious in the record books. Although beating Rafa in RG finals is more impressive. That is the only thing missing. Then he goes from goat to god.

No it isn't. It is not going to happen. I deal with reality not fantasy. I don't even think Federer would beat Nadal at the USO these days.
One more Wimbledon title or one more slam anywhere for Federer will do the trick.

Sorry, not going to happen is not reality. It's a fantasy if you try to predict the unknown future.

Reality is that we don't know yet.

Hey a lot of people are broke and they believe they can be millionaires or even billionaires.

And the gap between broke and billionaire is a lot bigger than gap between Multiple FO finalist and goat winning another FO beating past prime Nadal.

Ok, each to his own. Good luck with that possibility. I don't even think Novak will beat Nadal at the FO and Novak is six years younger than Federer.

I hope for miracles. Something can be in the air. Maybe Rafa is losing motivation after 9 FOs. Maybe he wants to be beaten, to relax, to get monkey of his back. Maybe he is tired of tennis. So, if he loses he rather loses to Federer. And maybe Federer has one off day when he plays god mode again. Who knows.

Those champions can do the impossible. Although I wouldn't say it's impossible, just improbable.

Federer needs to improve his slam play, because Nadal is about to become the first man in the Open Era to win the Double Career Grand Slam, and well on the way to 18 slam titles, and 2 Olympic Singles Golds.
Federer is about to fall behind Nadal officially, and the Davis Cup cannot save him.

THIS.
To many vamosses in this post.

Fed accomplished what he needed to do in DC. He needs to focus on his GS haul. He's still capable of getting 1-2 more. Adding DC might be too much at this point.

Yes, he should. The defending champion of any title is usually expected to at least try and defend their title.

He just said in an interview that he'll definitely play DAVIS cup this year again.

Off topic : He was asked about his new house and he said he doesn't own the entire building just a flat !!

Haha. This is funny. He can't even afford his own house. Has to share it :).

Yes that's what Nadal tends to do after a break, blitz the field.
Yep, the Olympics are on CLAY.

Remind me, who did he lose against this year on clay? Hmmm… Djokovic… Ferrer and… Almagro?

Who did he win tournaments against? Nishikori… Who gave up after being injured while battering Nadal in Madrid… And Djokovic… Who was puking at the sidelines…

What convincing domination!

Personally I would say no now that he has it.

He might even consider "doing a Murray" and skipping the FO (given he has no chance of winning it with Djokovic and Nadal) and spend that time training for the grass season and saving up energy for it to go all out at Wimbledon.

He's won one so no need. The back flaring up in WTF serves as a reminder he needs to manage his schedule smartly in 2015 and beyond.

That wouldn't be entirely silly as a matter of fact, but somehow I doubt he'd do it.

Also it would impact his longevity records (consecutive GS appearances etc.)

Edit: Actually he doesn't have the QF streak anymore, so he could tank in the 1R or 2R, thus preserving the streak.
That is what I would suggest to him if I were his coach I think.

I think Fed should "pull a Murray", but also "pull a Serena" and dramatically reduce his appearances across the board.

This would be my tailored schedule for him:

AO (go all out, but tank if you're going to be facing Nadal or Djokovic)
Dubai (go all out, should win)
IW (go all out)
Madrid (show up, have a hit, see if the draw opens up)
RG (tank in 1R to preserve consec. appearances, tank in 2R to preserve consec. appearances winning a match)
Halle (use as warm up, should win anyway)
Wimbledon (season should be focused on this, pace yourself in the early rounds)
Cincy (use as warm up, should win anyway)
USO (go all out, but tank if you're going to be facing Nadal or Djokovic)
Shanghai (test out court speed, if rubbish, tank and leg it to Switzerland)
Basel (go all out, should win)
WTF (go all out, perhaps tank beforehand if you're going to face Djokovic)

= 12 tourneys for the year, maybe Brisbane too = 13.
Ranking does not matter for him any more, all that matters is titles.

Overall:
- Tank in earlier round if you're going to face Nadal outside of the WTF or Wimbledon.
- Tank in earlier round if you're going to face Djokovic on a slow surface, better to preserve mental edge for fact HC/grass encounters.

Choose your battles carefully, and always be present in tourneys such as IW, Madrid, USO to potentially be able to vulture a title or two through lucky draws.

Don't bother with Rio 2016 unless Nadalovic don't play, and retire in 2017 or 2018 as the most accomplished tennis player to have ever lived.
