Federer and Nadal are Has Beens

I knew when I woke up this morning that Wawrinka was going to whoop on Fed. Yeah, Fed beat him on clay at that one event last month, but I watched that online and Wawrinka basically just threw that match. He played like he didn't care at all and Roger played like it was the most important match of his life.

These past couple of years have spelled the downfall of Federer and Nadal. I don't think either one wins another major. Federer is 34 and well past his prime and it shows when he plays a 29/30 year old tank like Stan the Man. Yeah Fed will still whoop on green, undeveloped players like we saw him do to Raonic a while back, but look at what happens to him when he plays a prime world #1 Djoko.

Nadal SHOULD be in his prime at his age, but his prime was actually in his early 20's and he's been playing so much tennis that he's accumulated a lot of injuries and put too many miles on his body. Additionally, his style of play and the amount of top spin he puts on balls has put so much stress on his body.

So now what happens? You end up making Djokovic look like an all time great and you end up with Cilic winning the U.S. Open.

Cry be a river...

Sounds like sound someone jealous of Novak dominating the sport.

Novak also dominated past few years too as well as 2011 when Nadal was at his peak and fed was still in his last 20's just turned 30.

Djoko is just the best. Deal with it! :)

Fed is 34, almost. Plus, he doesn't seem to like going to the gym too much and you kinda need to these days.

Nadal is a spent one-dimensional moonballing retriever. People were bound to adjust to his pseudo-tennis style sooner or later, plus his game is quite taxing on the body.

Nothing to see here, really.

LOL! Why'd he lose to Nishikori in the U.S. Open semi's then? I honestly think that's one of the worst losses deep in a major by a supposed Hall of Fame player in tennis history.

Agree 1000%. The only thing I would add is Fed if he keeps himself motivated and playing at a high level he can still get to finals and pick off a nice title now and then when Djokovic (usually) has an off day. Fed still has enough tricks up his sleeve to be competitive. But when he hits a Djoko or Wawa or Cilic or whomever who is in full flow he usually will not be able to come up with the answers.

Djoko will make up for that by maybe winning the grand slam this year my friend! Something fed or Nadal never did.

Plus this week career slam likely for Nole and to become the only player to have the Nadal and fed grand slam if he beats Rafa tomorrow!

Plus another long winning streak Nole is on! :)

We will know tomorrow. Nadal's serve doesn't get him enough cheap points. His forehand hasn't been penetrating the court. Stan played a great match. Federer can still serve but its his return game that has been his downfall from these matches being competitive

I have to agree with you that Djokovic has a good shot at winning the Grand Slam. The French Open will always be his biggest hurdle because there are a lot of other players whose games are much better suited for clay courts, but he's a big-time favorite to take this title. Something tells me that he'll slip up at Wimbledon though.

Nah. He is done and dusted. Saturn will Return and drag his arse to Helsinki.

But all others like Djokovic/Murray are blocked by Uranius.

And Nadal is approaching 12th year of his zodiac cycle.

Federer's been past his prime for a long time, still one of the best in the world though and the rankings show that. And he still wins a fair number of his matches vs Djokovic, and he never gets destroyed really.

Nadal is 29, no way should he be in his prime especially given his style of play.

Fed is 34, almost. Plus, he doesn't seem to like going to the gym too much and you kinda need to these days.

Only took them 10 years, what took them so long. Don't you think it's more likely that he's declined and simply not playing as well. Remains to be seen how far he really has declined, we should know more by this time tomorrow.

It will take longer time for Nadal to recover form this time. Like a year maybe?

I have yet to see Nadal's real slice serve for 1 and half year.
By the time Nadal hits slice serve on the sideline mid way between net and service line, his serve is back.

It's just a shame knowing that the Federer who was one of the best to play the game will never surface again. If he plays into his late 30's, we'll soon see the Roger who loses to Schwartzmann in the 2nd round of RG and in straights to Thiem at the Australian Open.

People keep saying this and Nadal won't last long. I've been hearing that for last frigging 10+ years.

People must be blind. The guy lasted 10 freaking years, the longest ever by any human being in history, at RG, physically most taxing slam.

Isn't it time to realize you are blind?

He'll still be beating Dimitrov for many a year yet though, never fear.

And don't you think that's worse to see, that Dimitrov is throwing away all that potential to such an extent that it would look like Gasquet has maximized his potential by comparison.

He moves very well on clay, which is a softer surface and is easier on the body by his own words, plus his preparation cycle (whatever it is) seems to be aimed for a peak right about that time of the year.

And I can still see rather well, thankfully. :)

I don't think any objective Fed fans (if there's such a thing?) would of predicted an easy victory over Wawrinka today. They were playing on the slower court and just like last year, Federer has problems hitting through his opponent on clay, so the conditions really didn't play to his advantage. On the other side, you got Wawrinka who's one of the strongest hitter on tour, and we all know how strong hitters aren't very good for Roger. Wawrinka is a streaky player, but when he's ON, he can beat anyone.

I don't think it's so bad that Federer lost today. Pretty much everyone was worried he wouldn't even make it past the 4th round, he made the QF. Had he made the final, I don't think anyone would of given him much chance against Djokovic or even Nadal. I say he made a respectable showing making it to the QF, but it now gives him more time to relax and get ready for the grass season where he stands a real chance at winning another slam. I'd much rather see him lose today and make it to the final of Wimbledon than making the final of the FO with very small chance of victory and then see him make an early exit at Wimbledon.

Looking at the match i didnt think fed played that badly. Stan played well. Just didnt do much on the return.

Cause he's not Hall of fame material.

Lol...if every player was denied entry into the Hall of Fame because of an occasional bad loss at a Slam, the Hall would be a very lonely and empty place indeed!

It's funny how a 34yr old great champion makes it to the quarter finals of the French Open in which he has only WON ONCE by the way is all of the sudden a has been. You guys and your knee jerk reactions are so childish. A has been is a champion type player who can no longer consistently make it to the second week of slams. Federer wasn't even threatened one bit by anyone last week.

Both have given so much to the sport and have been without question the two biggest exponents of tennis in the last 9-10 years. But yes in the last two years or so both have been in considerable decline.

It's a major concern for the ATP when both retire. Djokovic's complete domination is not good for the sport and the young crop simply aren't up to the task

It wouldn't be sport if you didn't have hundreds of people jerking their knees to every defeat though would it? It's the same in every sport.

It still doesn't make it right. He lost to a grand slam champion. A guy who has beaten the great Novak Djokovic and the great Rafael Nadal in a grand slam. It was not that much of a wow he's done type of defeat. It was not like the loss he suffered to Robredo in the U.S. Open a few years ago. And I'm not even a Federer fan.
