Can Wawrinka win a career grand slam?

He is halfway there. The US Open sets up nicely for him. Wimbledon will be the toughest for him, but in a year like this one Nole will be his only big challenge. And if can beat him once, he can do it again.

Why? Just because Djokovic is the only guy he came up against in the semis and finals of the first 2 Slams?

Who do you think is more likely to win a Slam in their least preferred conditions out of Stanimal and Andy Murray? So, Wimbledon and Roland Garros respectively.

Whichever of these has the best chance to punch through at their weakest Slam probably has the best chance of achieving the Career Slam. I think neither of them will get there.

USO, yes he could because he's been a champion on HCs and has gone very deep two years running @Flushing. Wimby will be the hard one for Stan...he won't win a lot of easy points with his 2nd serve that doesn't kick on grass and his volleying is not a strong suit. That being said, stranger things have happened there...Wimby was Agassi's first leg to his career slam.

I wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry if he did. I'd probably be shocked if he did it before Murray.

Do not count Stan out of Wimby. He in fact has better volleys than Murray and Djokovic and made the quarters. I wouldn't like his chances there against Federer but I do against everyone else.

Once again The Stanimal can stalk under the radar and feed.

It would be quite odd if any of them got there given the amount of their respective slams and given that they are both rather old and given that they have one relatively poor slam each.

I wouldn't put it past either of them to win their worst slam at their best (Murray having better chances though), but to do that AND win the other one they are missing seems quite unlikely.

More for Stan than for Muzziah imo, partly due to age - partly due to consistently, partly due to Murray's many AO RU's and partly due to Murray's current level on clay being better than what Stan has shown at Wimbledon.

Perhaps you didn't see the Wimby quaters match vs. Federer? He took the first set and lost the 2nd set via tie break. It was a very tight match. Right now Stan is playing even better.

You can rest assured the big three wouldn't be thrilled to face him.
When you think of the possible draws and the 7 matches if he gets to the quarters who exactly is going to beat him?

Like you say, Wimbledon will be the toughest but when he's on he can beat anyone.

Was this to me?
I actually only caught extended highlights. I do believe he's a threat and has enough game to win, if he redlines again, but I'm also fairly confident in claiming it's his worst surface and worst slam.

At Wimby if the big 3 plus Stan get passed the Rosols and Kyrgioses of the world it will be up for grabs. The first week at Wimby is especially dangerous.

However facing Fed with the roof closed is a scenario probably too tough.

I'm not touting Stan as the favorite there, but having to take out hot red Feli Lopez THE DAY BEFORE certainly didn't help his cause in the quarter against Fed. Stan ran out of gas after the first set bombing of his countryman. I would also venture to say that he CAN volley and well at that... so serving and hitting that big, who would want to play him at Wimby? Besides, the second week has slower conditions, as we all know.

In theory, yes, though Wimbledon might be a bit of a stretch.

I don't know about Stanimal. Has he entered into a phase of his career where he's going to be a consistent force, contend in nearly every Slam, and really, really focus on tennis all the time and be engaged all the time?

Or, is he going to go the Safin, Nalbandian route of being uber-talented, always a potential threat, but a bit flakey here and there, such that he'll be great for a slam or two, and then kind of lose it before regaining it.

He could win a natural career grand slam, has anyone done that before? (The 4 grand slams in order as first 4 slam wins)

This place is a mad house. You all just got done predicting the future for Nadal and Novak. Now that Wawrinka has won a slam, you're going to do the same thing for him.

This is just crazy.

I strongly doubt he'd win another major again

On grass his lack of athleticism would be easily exposed

hes not winning Wimbledon

Never say never in sports ;)

Let's be honest, did you think Wawrinka could win RG this year before the start of the tournament when:
1) He lost in 1st round previous year
2) Never went past QF before this year
3) Djokovic was the heavy favourite winning almost everything this year

Did you expect Cilic to win USO last year?

All I am saying everyone in the draw has some chance (however small it might be). Some has more, some has less.

Exactly. And I typed Murray in place of Wawrinka because I was absolutely sure that Murray had the 2nd best chance to win RG this year. ;)

I was also waiting for the astrologers to barge in and talk about why they knew Novak could not win because some planet or another was in the wrong sign, house or at the wrong degree.

Well, well, well, I found out today that Rod Laver agrees with me. Great tennis minds think alike. :) My analysis was, in fact, spot on!

Last year, Wawrinka reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals – his best performance on his 10th appearance at the All England Club. Laver sees no reason why he can’t improve upon that result.

“I think grass should be right up Wawrinka’s alley. His serve is perfect and he volleys well, so I expect him to do well at Wimbledon.”

Also, note that Stan blasted 62 aces on the French red clay, imagine that serve on grass.

Alternatively, whose max play level when at their best, is better? I'd say Stan. That level negates, IMO, the negatives he faces when he plays on grass. Which is connected to....

Stan is not a bad grass player. How many people have taken a set off of Federer on grass? Feli Lopez is himself a great grasscourt player, and he took care of him.

Precisely.

It doesn't mean Stan is sailing to a Wimbledon title. I do believe, given the right circumstances (the draw/into the second week...his level of play) that it'd be stupid to rule it out. Didn't many rule out Novak from ever winning Wimbledon once?

If he somehow wins Wimbledon this year, I think it could happen. He needs to survive the first week and be a bit more lucky in the draw/schedulling, which has ****ed him last year I think. If he's suddenly on the quarters again and vs a more favourable matchup, the the worn out grass and overall slower conditions could give him a great chance.

I think he will do well on the USO regardless because he plays well there, I think the surface there also favours his game and it was the first GS where he reached the quarter finals actually.

He certainly can. If he can win AO and FO, why not the other 2? Whatever happened to "courts are homogenized"?.

Today's commentators should take a page from Laver's book. Instead of going on and on, he just sums things up.

He may not be the GOAT, but his manners certainly are.

Wimbledon is really a stretch but you never know...his best chance would still be at US and Aus Open. It would be hilarious if he did manage to complete it before Djokovic though

I'm curious which of the big three you think would defeat Stan in the 2nd week? Anyone can go down in the first week of course.

No one has the answer which is interesting, the lack of confidence is just weird.

No one is winning any Slams again apart from Nadal and Djokovic. After this tumultuous period, order will once again be restored.

Which is what the majority said after his Australian Open win...

Still a better question though. One slam at a time. I won't pretend that I wasn't surprised when Stan won RG because I was, (I'm pretty sure before RG that no one actually picked Stan, and if they did they should've laid money on it) but even though theoretically you could make a case for a career slam for him, I would be absolutely shocked if he pulled that off. He might get a USO, but I don't see a Wimbledon on the horizon. Clay always was Stan's best surface anyway. Grass not so much.

I don't know...a divorce, your ex trying to edit you out of your daughter's life... seems predictable that would affect your work life.

If anything he bounced back more quickly than expected.

I'm not saying he'll never do it, just thinking it will be hard. I would be happy if he does it, but he's so unpredictable.
