Did Sharapova ruin the Serena Slam?

If I'm not mistaken, she was supposed to be in Vinci's quarter of the draw. Thanks to her withdrawal (and other things) that draw opened up nicely and Vinci reached the semis. In hindsight oh how would Serena have loved to have gotten the free pass called Sharapova (who hits as many doubles in one game as Vinci did in whole match) in the semis instead. Very smart tactics from Sharapova. She stopped Serena from winning all four by doing nothing, something she couldn't have accomplished by playing against Serena.

that's a pretty funny post

but I bet Maria is kicking herself right now thinking that maybe she could have been the one to stop Serena and be favored to win against Flavia

Sharapova can hit a slice backhand? And come to the net and volley? Nope, she would have lost against Serena.

And yet...Sharapova's record as a player is much better than Roberta's because Maria is a much better player than Roberta.

Had Sharapova caught Serena on a bad day, she too would have come away with the win.

The only difference being that Serena doesn't seem to allow herself a bad day when she is playing against Maria.

1 out of 5 is better than 2 out of 20?

Maths not your strong point I guess?

Actually, I meant to say that Sharapova has a better record overall than Vinci not a better record against Serena and Sharapova is clearly a much better player than Vinci.

Well yeah, but she's not capable of beating Serena. Not any more.

If Serena played like she did today, Maria would have killed her.

It's hard to say for sure, but I've never seen Serena look out of sorts against Maria the way she has been so many times this year against lower ranked players.

No, I think what ruined Serena was the rain.

Imagine if they played yesterday as planned? Not saying that Serena would win for sure but who knows?

With the atmosphere of a night match, who knows? Maybe it would have pumped Serena up enough to pull out the win.

But she's also looked shaky in night matches. Just seems like she has really struggled with her emotions/nerves this year but came out the victor most of the time. It's actually been an incredible year for her.

I'm sure she is relieved that the stress of chasing the CYS is over but also probably disappointed in a way that most of us can't really fathom.
