are you serious? Wayyyy past his prime hewitt took a set off of novak at his BEST SLAM in his PEAK PERIOD!

Ivan Dodig did the same (against a much better playing Novak in 2011 AO).

As Kragster said, there's a significant difference between troubling a player(taking a set) and beating said player.

4 sets against old broke down hewitt.

I think the question is answered.

Hewitt was a downward spiral at the time (since 2006 actually) but that was hardly the year in which Novak played his best grasscourt tennis either.

Hewitt proved that with the right draw, a sub 6ft counterpuncher can win Wimbledon. Did he get lucky? Of course!! But no more so than Agassi winning the FO in '99. The stars certainly aligned for Hewitt, leading to a final against Nalbandian. A year later, he wasn't so lucky, losing to Karlovic in the 1st round.

I do not see how Prime Hewitt could beat Prime Djokovic at Wimbledon. Too much firepower and as much consistency off the ground from Djoker. I think it would be a similar match to the Chang-Muster FO final of '95. Hewitt was very good on grass, but Djoker is just a class above. IMO

Prime Hewitt would hardly take a set to Djokovic if he would play in his top form from 2011. It would be brutal... :)

I guess both players had only one Wimbledon title at the time. I wonder if people feel differently now that Novak has added two more to his resume.

It is hard to not say Novak with 3 titles. However I think both Roddick and Hewitt would be a handful for him on grass, despite the large disparity in achievement. Grass is the surface far more than any other, a well past his prime Hewitt was often having competitive matches with prime Djokovic.

Interesting to see the poll results. Good to see Hewitt getting some respect here. That said I predict the Djokovic votes to fly up simply since he backed up his 2011 Wimbledon level with almost similar level at Wimbledons 2014 and 2015. I think previously the thought might have been that was a one off performance for him on grass.

I think Hewitt and Roddick at their best would have good shots at 11-13 Djokovic and even win the majority. But the form Djokovic showed in 2014 and 2015 was really very high. I'd have to favor Djokovic in a tight match due to his pedigree but they could cause problems and win matches.

It's more a case of Djokovic not getting any respect here. The poll could have asked "Who would win: Prime Henman or Prime Djokovic at Wimbledon" and Djokovic would still lose in the poll.

Three Wimbledon titles in the last five years. In the two he didn't win he lost to the eventual champ. What more does Djoker need to accomplish on grass before he gets a bit of respect?

Well take a look at that poll. Lol.

Trust me it was even less "prettier" before this thread got bumped! Haha I know cuz i was sticking around for long enough now...nobody gave a single vote to Hewitt ever since! LOL It just stayed at 50 ever since this got bumped! While Djokovic got like 8 or 10 votes already!

Now that's just sad. Lol. It amazes me how many people on this board have underrated Djokovic on grass for years. I actually thought Hewitt was good on grass but lucked up with one of the softest draws in that last 20 years.

Draw was soft but he wasn't lucky. He underperformed on grass in 00-01 after showing great play at Queen's - though he was only 19-20 years old. In 2002 he was very good aside from a pushy match versus Schalken, not an unworthy winner at all.

They call it luck of the draw. Lol. So to me it was some luck involved. ;) I think Hewitt was really good on grass but quite overrated because of his wins against Sampras at Queens. Sampras notoriously played possum in matches at Queens even at his peak and then when the big show came around, Wimbledon, he put them all in their place. I didn't imply he was an unworthy winner since he won 7 matches and got the title.

Hewitt beat pretty much everyone on grass across his career - of course not all of them in slams but still. He's probably underrated everywhere IMO.

Not overrated outside of TTW but maybe underrated outside of here. I can agree with that.

There are many old threads that don't deserved to be bumped, but this one does.

Comment I liked the most: "peak/prime Hewitt will paste Djokovic"

Prime for prime - Djokovic in 4, possibly 5. I'm sure Hewitt would put up a good fight but Djokovic would be victorious in the end. Djokovic has never put an opponent away in straight sets in a Wimbledon final, besides the final vs Anderson in 2018 (in which the real final was the narrow victory against Nadal), so more than likely it would be a multiset match.

Consistency is where Djokovic would really get Hewitt if you're comparing the two. Hewitt never even made another final after winning Wimbledon the first time.

I like Hewitt, but this is pretty easy. Djokovic would be a very bad match up for Hewitt, although not quite as awful as Federer. The only thing Hewitt really does better than Djokovic are passing shots, which would be almost irrelevant in the match up for obvious reasons.

Wasn't that poll closed earlier and didn't this thread get deleted? Are my eyes playing tricks on me?

In defense of the voters here keep in mind Djokovic was only a 1 time Wimbledon Champion when this poll was started, just like Hewitt. And Djokovic's level in winning Wimbledon 2011 was lower than 2014/2015 and probably even 2018/2019 (which in itself was lower than 2014/2015).

On the grass he won on, Hewitt would beat Djokovic. On today's grass, Djoker beats every version of Hewitt 8-9 / 10 times, maybe 9-9.5...

I think Hewitt might be better against the field or some fields on the old grass. I dont think he beats Djokovic in the head to head match up though. Business would be conducted almost exclusively from the baseline, and I see Hewitt having a hard time beating Djokovic period in that scenario.
