Babolat Origin!

For the last few years, the preferred string setup in my Head Youtek Graphene Speed Pro was VS Gut in the mains and RPM Blast in the crosses. I love the feel and the power that this combo gives. Unfortunately, it goes dead really fast. Expensive endeavor.

Earliest this week, my stringer recommended that I try a full bed of Babolat Origin 17 instead. I had him string it up and I took it out last night for a hit. At first, the launch of the ball was unpredictable and it took about an hour or so for the string to settle evenly. But after that, what an incredible string. Fantastic feel and pocketing. It is less powerful than the VS/RPM combo, but not so much that it bothers me. You really can swing out with this string. From what I understand, unless you are a real string breaker, this string will last literally 3 or 4 months without going dead. It is a monofilament that isn't a poly, but behaves like a really nice multi-filament.

I have always been a fan of Gosen OG Sheep Micro and I actually think this string feels better.

Anyways, I thought I'd give a recommendation for this string if people currently use a gut hybrid and are looking for something with somewhat comparable feel, more durability, at less cost.

Hi mightyrick, ive become a fan or Origin along similar reasons and uses as you. Played with VS /4G and now using Origin/4G, even a full bed of Origin is a lot of fun. I traditionally play with a full poly, but my wrist had been hurting a bit more then usual (playing a lot of tennis lately). So switched to full gut, full origin, hybrids for a while, and my wrist is as good as new now..Origin is really great string...very impressesd

I am also a full Origin player. It is a fantastic string - nice predictable response not to hard on the elbow. My next re-string is to try VS in the mains and Origin in the crosses. There have been mixed reviews on this setup on the boards here - but nothing definitive.

yes I agree, I use origin and Luxilon hybrid and been very happy with it. I like the Gut/ luxilon better but gut is too expensive to restring every 2 matches so I use origin. it is crisp and powerful. I wish Origin came in 18 G so I could try it but I can't find 18 G anywhere

How is the notching?

Spin potential and control compared to VS/RPM?

Thanks in advance!

I haven't actually had any problems with notching. Some others even complained about string movement, but I haven't really seen it yet. But then again, I've not had enough hours with it, yet. We'll see.

Spin potential is far less than the RPM. To me, that is a negative. If I want the ball to dive at the end of the shot, I really have to make sure that I get a good full unit turn, really bend the knee, and get a good rotation. When it comes to spin, Origin gives you nothing for free. Certainly not like RPM and/or Luxilon ALU Rough does.

I might try VS Gut and Origin next time. My only complaint with a full bed of this string is that it has a little less power than I'd like. I think paired with VS... it would really give it some good pop.

BTW, my stringer said it didn't come in 18g. That was the first question I asked him. :)

I'm joining the party a bit late, but I really love playing with a full bed of Origin now. I first tried it april 2015, but kept using poly in my main racquets. Tried it again earlier this year but didn't switch. But I do have sensitive wrists and elbows and now I've reached a point where I have to use something more soft. So I tried Origin for the third time and I'm playing the best tennis I've played in a long time.

It feels like something inbetween poly and multi. Like the best of both worlds.

I've tried all three colours and I find they all play the same. Maybe the natural moves less, but it's not by much. Anyone else compare the colours?

Can anyone compare Origin to Cream? I have been an avid player of Origin and am looking for something a little cheaper

I loved Origin 16 in my pure aeros but I just can't afford it. The feel was very unique, not quite multifil/synthetic yet very comfortable. Power was there in strong fashion. Spin was meh. It feels like it held its tension quite well. The durability is just not good at all imo. Broke the string in under 5 1-2 hour hitting sessions

Yeah @FoldingChair it should be mentioned that it's best suited for non string breakers. I use the 17 version strung at 24 or 23kgs in my pure strikes. I never break strings actually, so for me it's perfect. And I get great spin out of them also, but that's mainly technique. :)
