Average swing and static weight of pro player racquets?

Is it only few top players use racquets with 360-370 g swing weight or most of the ATP players go north of 350? And what about WTA?

At recreational level, average swing weight seems to falls around 310 (+/- 25 g); with similar or bit more static weight.

every atp player, with 1 or 2 exceptions, is playing with a sw of over 350. the amount of weight and stability you need to return a 130 mph serve is much more than recreational tennis rackets provide.

on the many women use the 11oz more or less unstrung and with sw around 330

Hi Kailash,

1. Greg Raven's Site has many pro specs (including swingweight) mostly from 2006-2012 or thereabouts. There is also a page called "Grab bag of legacy specs" which has a few player digits dating back to 2001.

Sw 360 is about average. Notable digits are Soderling's sw of 392, Carlos Moya at sw 399, Taylor Dent at sw 400.7 Marion Bartoli at sw 394, Radwanska at sw 315, Pat Rafter at sw 355.

2. If you go digging through the basement of the TW Forum here you will find Jura's post in a dusty corner that has specs for all the male players in the French Open 2005. You'll find mass, balance, length, strings and tension, but unfortunately, no swingweights are noted.

That's awesome! Thank you Jack.

It is amazing and inspiring to see those numbers; pros are pros; fit, athletic and strong to wield those heavy racquets.

Actually, today's pros are using much lighter racquets than their predecessors. During the wood era, pros used wood racquets that weighed between 14 oz. to 17 oz. with swingweights between 400 to 500.

having fondled and seen up close Robin Soderlings racket recently it is a thing of beauty, the handle is pretty special too, I was told it was 380g static and 32cm balance, looked like a PT57a to me...

Don't know what to say! Just looked at Jack Kramers' racquet specs. Weight between 15 to 16 ounces, grip size 5 1/4", with a head size of 68 sq. inches

Maybe I will try to get one of those wooden racquets; just to see if I can hit few balls :)

Actually, Jack Kramer's personal racquet was 17 oz. A member here has one of his personal custom Jack Kramer Autograph racquets:
The custom JK autograph was about 17 oz's. The standard Donnay Borg Pro was 13oz so the one that was made for Bjorn with the extra wood laminations on the throat lower hoop must have added atleast 1..2 ozs, maybe more like the Kramer ? I have one of the JK auto rackets made for Jack and it is approx 17 oz.

Todays rackets are much stiffer so with that extra power the old school swing weights is not needed soo much.
Playing a heavy racket is not an issue for players who have full swings and good windup mechanics, like advanced players.
Most pros leadup todays rackets and greatly benefit from the higher swing weight.
Todays rackets are made for customizing to your preferred balance and swingweight.

there was a spreadsheet on tt a year or 2 ago that had 43 atp players unstrung weight and balance but no sw. I added .6 oz to average unstrung weight and to get average strung weight and it was 12.6 oz. Of course there was a pretty big variance, but I think 12.6 oz average is about right. also, sw seems to be in the 350-375 range and there are exceptions above and below. If I had to swag average pro racket, I would say 12.6 oz, sw 355-360 and 6-7 hl. the spreadsheet also had length and there were quite a few that had slightly extended rackets too.

I think the newer pros like nishikori, dimitrov, kyrgios, coric etc are using even light rackets with lower swingweight.

It makes me rethink a year ago and switch to a lighter racket..

I think the current trend is around 330-340 weight and 335 to 350 sw

Strung or unstrung? I find it surprising that it could be 330 strung. If I try to return a serve coming at more than 200km/h with a 330 strung racket, yeah the racket is likely to lack stability...

Apparently its strung. The unstrung was only roughly 315 to 325. I think the theory they applied is just like Nadal's racquet. lower static weight & high swing weight. maybe the newer racquets materials are really slightly stronger for the younger pro who are using.
You might try tweaking your swingweight and lead tape placement to achieve stability at the areas where u find lacking.

Isn't the stock ps97s like 310 grams unstrung and then Dimitrov adds 20 grams to the butt?

Yepp almost there slightly below 330. If u add the weight of the string its roughly 345g only which is alot lesser than roger, novak, stan etc era.

I'm pretty sure Hyeon Chung is using a stock Dunlop Biomimetic 3.0, and he does quite well at return of serve..

Yea its really surprising. Its like ppl are trying to tweak to this and that Pro Player but the newer pros are just basically using those racket we are using now with some minor tweak.
Its probably due to the "modern forehand" concept which may contribute to this newer trend where racket are made specifically for those strokes, compact swing and load for more power. Body over arms. Faster racket head speed and snap
