Volkl Cyclone?

Any one tried this string? I've been recommended it and i'm planning on getting it cuz of the low price but any tension reccomendations (yes i know tension relies on your racquet, playing style, ect.).

One of my favorite strings right now. Great bite, reasonable prices, but a little on the stiff side so I would string it maybe 2 lbs lower than your normal tension for a poly and if you have any sort of arm issues put in a soft cross.

Coincidently, just strung up Cyclone 18 a few days ago myself. Maybe a buzz is building. Normally I play with NXT, so I thought this would be very stiff, but it's a fairly soft poly (just string -2 lbs from what you would string a multi).

Good power - not as much as gut or NXT, but massive amount of spin and pretty good at the net as well.

I may try mixing with NXT on the crosses next time, but for now I'm really happy I tried the cyclone. Plus, the black strings have a nice intimidation factor.

Hey Aggie, what other string / tension do you use as your main with the Cyclone? I'm not smart enough to decipher the rubric in your footer!

I echo the favorable comments concerning Cyclone. It's a little stiff, but you get great spin and durability. I've played the 17g and the 16g. Both have great playability.

I've strung at 3lbs lower tension. I can live will a little more "trampoline" because I hit with topspin on both sides and the string does the rest.

I love this string. I like the 17g in mains strung low - 46-48 lbs - and Yonex 850; Mantis Comfort; Tourna Quasi Gut; and /or Prince Recoil (for more spin) in the crosses about 10% higher. It plays very close to textured polys twice the price (or more) - a great value. Very comfortable at lower tensions.

Right now I am using Head FXP Power 16g at 58 in the main with Cyclone 18g at 54 in the cross. The others are not using cyclone in the cross. I usually only keep one stick with a poly in the cross because it does cut through the mains fairly quickly. I use this stick only for matches. I've found cyclone has a good ability to be in a hybrid very well. I have used TF Ematrix, TF X-1 Biphase and now Head FXP power in the mains. All played very well. I am trying to find my go to main string but I am going to have my pratice raquets crossed with Rip Control (low powered multi that is ribboned so it helps with string movement) and Cyclone for my matchs.

Dang i can't wait till i can order them! lol but so Cyclone in the mains or crosses? I was thinking about doing a full bed at 55 but if i like it i'll probably try it in a hybrid so in the mains or crosses?

I'm interested in this string. Hows the durability?

Durability is good. I used the 17g in my mains string at 58# in a Prince 110 stick. Though I play with heavy topspin, it lasted 6 weeks before I replaced because my crosses were about to break.

I did have one bad durability string job with Cyclone when I used the Big Hitter Blue (17g) for the crosses. However, I was under 50 degrees and I've found colder weather make poly strings less durable.

For the cost, you should be happy with both playability and durability in a racquet like the Dunlap Aero.

It depends how you want it to play. I use them in the cross because I like a softer bed for my arm and more feel. If you want more spin and durablity go for it in the mains.

The string has plenty of pop, fantastic spin and control, and does not move much in the string bed. String softens and becomes more comfortable over time. "Gear" shape wears out relatively quickly (3 hours) but spin is still good. Durability is above average. Control gets better over time. Cyclone is better in just about every way over MSV Focus HEX and at a lower price point as well you can't go wrong. Great string, it also got a good rating in the German Tennis Magazine 2009. All in all an impressive string for a ridiculous price.

Oh...well what tension did you use and what racquet do you have?

I strung it at my normal tension (58 lbs), and it definitely didn't feel great until an hour into hitting with it. I would drop tension 3ish lbs and that should soften it up enough. What is your normal set-up?

A bit too stiff and low power. Durable and high spin potential. Not the best feel but great performance.

Do you play with poly on a consistent basis? I could see someone saying this if they were going from a hybrid to a full-bed of Cyclone, but Cyclone is definitely softer than all 1st gen polys.

i am in the same situation and want to switch from Rpm blast to something cheaper and have already tried eagnas poly nova nd want a better poly and so i am looking at blue gear, big ace and cyclone.

I haven't found my string yet but i usually use full bed poly. And yeah i was going to string it at 55.

Cool try big ace revo and blue gear ultra spin from thetennisdepot.com and tell us what you think!

Hmmm... I'm trying out a full bed of Cyclone now (strung 2 lbs lighter than usual) and it does not feel harsh on my arm.

I've had some bouts with TE before and I was nervous about a poly, but my stringer swore by the cyclone and said he'd swap it out for free if I didn't like it.

I guess he was right. Not as soft as a gut, but it's pretty cushy and not nearly as harsh as a Big Banger.

I'll try it in a hybrid on my other racquet - more to get a bit more power on my flat serve than for comfort. Thanks for the tips, Aggie.

Racquet BB11 (98 325g 18x20)
Tension - 52 Lb main, cross is syn.gut at 50.
After a week of play can add these strings lose tension quick (not very durable, but this is not an issue).
I want them be the best, but unfortunately they are not.

You have to be right about 1st gen.
I play with all kind of strings except nat.gut (long years was playing only with polyester (Lux. Babolat and Kirshbaum)).
(Can recommend to try Kirshbaum Hybrix 17 Spin – much better feel, spin and power(balanced) for my taste)
I do prefer certain polyester (and looking for anything else that can be same good ).
Cannot be agree that Cyclone provides super spin, just some.
Plus no power. It makes me wonder why I need these strings if I can get better spin with syn.gut.
Durability is not important for me at all (these lasted over one week, which is very good). However Cyclone breaks first with nylon cross.

Going to try higher tension since tension is going down fast.
My next setup will be something like 57-58x53-56 Cyclone-Syn.gut

Try Cyclone even LOWER and you might be surprised at the added power and spin you get - and how big the sweet spot gets. Still plenty of control at 44-48 lbs.!

I was using in the the mains at 46 with Mantis Comfort or Tourna Quasi Gut in the crosses, and it felt like the sweet spot was the size of a butterfly net - good spin, good control, good comfort, nice feel.

Read the discussion boards. LOTS of players taking the string tensions down into the 40's now on many of these polys - or lower!

I have not tried tourbite, but I'm a long time cyclone user and I'm looking to switch because it's just a bit too powerful for me. I string it in the high 50's after prestretch, and it's fantastic, but a bit too much of a rocket launcher for me. Very soft, which you wouldn't expect from how hard and wirey it feels when you string it.

which is better ? for power and spin. Cyclone or solinco tourbite ?

For my not-too-high RHS (4.0, dropping towards 3.5 as age+weight go up) there was no comparison - Cyclone is more powerful and gave better spin. It's not a power string, though... it's just that Tourbite is even less so.

Tried Cyclone 16g at 54/52 yesterday. Plays well and is pretty comfortable. It is also quite powerful. Was not a fan of it compared to my normal Big Hitter Blue. Cyclone is definitely more plush and lacks the crispness of BHB. I also didn't feel like I was getting extra spin either. I've played with Pro Supex Blue Gear and it has much better ball bite than Cyclone.

Kalin, thank you for your feedback. Now I have to try the Cyclone since I did like the 18G Tourbite but I thought control was slightly worse than Alu power, but I loved the Spin and power on serve. So What I will do is Try the Cyclone Tour, since I read in TW review that it is even more powerful and more spinny than Cyclone original.

Tour is more powerful but I'd say spin is about the same or maybe a slight nod to regular Cyclone.

Which do you think is Overall better string ? if you exclude price or durability out of the equation. since I cut out my poly at 4-6 hour mark, durability is no matter to me..... that is why I buy so many strings from TW...lol

I used Cyclone Tour for the past year and played the best tennis of my life early in 2015 with it. Right now though, I'm liking Cyclone a little better. When conditions are cool or wet, generally slow, I like Tour better.

As above, most of the playtester are saying Tourbite has way more spin than the Cyclone tour....is that true ?

I'll try regular Tour Bite next month. I have only test Tour Bite Soft to date. That strings was spinny but too springy for me.

I have used new Tour bite soft 18 G yesterday for 3 hours of play time. and I am loving this string, insane spin, manageable power, decent control. but I heard so many good things about Cyclone and Cyclone tour,,,should I go ahead and try the Cyclone too ? or just stay with this new tourbite soft 18G ? Is Cyclone even better than tourbite soft ?

Give Cyclone a try...does not hurt to try plus it sounds like you string quite often, you might love this string. I try the 19g and it has insane spin also.

Well, I just came off trying out Cyclone 17g on a TC97 @48lbs and I hated it. Way way to plush and mushy. I cut it out and replaced with quadro twist and it was so much better.

it looks like feel and response of a string is a very subjective thing. topspn calls it "mushy and plush" in my experience it was quite dull and stiff although spin, power and control were superb. Very predictable response. Even in 18g its very durable and must be cut out before it breaks usually.

yes, this is what I am afraid of with Cyclone. Dull and Stiff means it doesn't give me much feedback from the string...... Tourbite soft gives you great feedback even though it is a Poly. so I am afraid to try the Cyclone now

Of course, it is subjective especially when it could feel quite different in different frames. In my frame which is super comfortable and foam filled it was just mush @48lbs

Give it a shot, it is a good string. I really was hoping for a holy grail of strings with cyclone considering the hype it has with the TW staff and here on the forums, but it was a bit disappointing, maybe my expectations were too high. I will certainly try Tour Bite Soft now, I once bought a used stick strung with it and didn't like it but it was probably dead.

Cyclone Tour is noticeably softer than regular cyclone, a bit more springy too, I liked it's response better. Another one to consider that has similar qualities is Solinco Revolution 17, 17l or 18. I remember really enjoying that one, I could do whatever I wanted with the ball, soft and decent power too. I really thought my search was over but it started bothering my wrist after 2 hours of hitting :/ Soft feel, painful anyway. Poly is a strange animal.

I find Cyclone Tour a little too springy particularly when blocking back serves and on slice backhands. Also, it's very muted which for me, makes it hard to feel the ball sometimes. For my game, Cyclone is a much better fit. It's crisper, lower powered but still comfortable.

I've used the Cyclone Tour 18g as a hybrid with natural gut or full bed, replacing the Cyclone 18g, and before that RPM Blast 17g. I moved from Cyclone because if it didn't break, it would get hard and feel a bit harsh.
I found the Cyclone Tour to be softer, even as playability wears off, it doesn't feel harsh like the Cyclone does when it's dead. The CT is a little bit more temperamental to string. My stringer has delivered a few bad string jobs, where the strings just felt deadish and lacked bite. Never had that problem with any other string. Powerwise, I'd give the CT the slight nod. It does give a tad bit more feel that Cyclone. Spinwise, my own senses couldn't tell much difference, but I did play on a playsight court and it showed a very slight 1.5% increase in rpm with the CT, when I tested both strings on 2 different racquets of the same model.
I recently moved back to the Cyclone, but in 19g. It gives slightly more bite and similar power to the CT18g but feels a tad better on volleys. Since I break 19g every 5-7 hours, it never has a chance to lose playability and harden up. So I use the 19g on game days with 17g natural gut and the CT18g on fun hitting days. I string them from 43-48lbs, with 3-4lbs less on the cross.
