MY POLY REVIEWS

I have benefited from this forum a number of times, time to add something from my experience.

I got over 50 sets of polyester strings, I use Gamma x-2 drop weight stringer. In the ideal world I would like to get 2 sets or more of each, try it once and then adjust for tension. I do my best to research the string to see what tension would be most appropriate. It is not perfect, just a reflection of my experience.

The same string might play terribly in one racquet and work out very well in another. I couldn't stand Tour Bite in a closed pattern Prestige, but it worked very well in a 16x19 Yonex... Also thicker gauges can play VERY different. Best examples would be Solinco Revolution and Diadem Solstice Power: they are absolutely fantastic in 18g and not so great in 16g. Stringbed typically will have less bite and is much firmer with lower power (unless that is what you are looking for)

Let me know if you like the format, I like the column style so you can see al the info on one picture instead of scrolling through essays of info. I will keep adding, adjusting ranks as I keep restringing.

It is all obviously very subjective and ranks are based mostly on what works for MY game. The fact that a string is low on the list does not necessary mean it is a bad string. It means that it didn't work for me and the odds of me switching to it/getting a reel would be rather low.

I like to take as much power from a setup as I can without sacrificing control. With that said I prefer 12+ ounce low power sticks and manipulate power with string setup.

If the setup does what I intend to do in terms of spin, direction power and trajectory - it is successful and ranks higher, feel and comfort are also very important. I DO NOT take cost into account.

When I am done with all I have I am planning to retest the top 10 strings too see how they stock up against each other.

My background - 5.0 NTRP, hit hard, semi western forehand, one handed backhand.
Usually play singles with juniors and open level players.
Here is a video of me hitting forehands just to give you an idea how these things are tested (plus point play of course) :

Hi Mareqnyc, Thanks for your post, I find such comparatives intersting.
Personally Gamma Moto is still my favorite string among all strings I playtested (amon a lot, even the expensive Luxilon strings).
At the moment, the only full poly which is coming close is Alu Power Rough.

2 remarks to the table format:
  1. I would separate Feel and Comfort (it is not because a string is rather uncomfortable that it has no feel. Ex: Isospeed Black Fire)
Anf in your table, I personnaly found Gamma Moto to be pretty firm, but feeling was better.
  2. I would add power
Question: why haven't you tried the Luxilon strings (f. ex. Alu Power, Alu Power Rough, Alu Power soft, Alu Power Spin, Luxilon Element) ?

My compliments, and I like the format. Funny thing, I recently tried Gamma Moto as well in 17 gauge and really liked it. No problems at all in the comfort department. Strung in a Prince Tour 100 16 x 18 at 25 x 26k (roughly 55 x 57 lbs)

I think it looks cool, LOL, I like your review of RPM Blast!! "broke in 30 minutes" :) I agree though, many better strings out there.

Eh? Pro supex BA is no 1 in that table with Moto down at 7. How can Moto therefore be your favourite string?

Thanks for sharing. I like the table style. What string is next on your list?
I will see how this table grows, its a pain in the *** to post it, I have to upload a screenshot as an URL, doesn't seem like there is a quicker way

I want to restring PHT and Black shark a bit lower to see how it feels. The plan is to go through a bunch of sets and decide on a reel

Very good suggestions. I will adjust the table as I test more. I have Alu Power, 4G and Timo.

Moto 17 keeps tension well and is very predictable on hard shots. It is a kind of string that I could keep in one of my sticks in my bag when I need a solid, reliable response. Don't like the dull feel though

Played another 3 sets with the Black Ace today. Time to cut it out. Performance drops quite significantly after 6 hrs.

Try fire wire 1.30mm mains, and x1 biphase crosses. See my thread on string experiments for today. String the upper crosses lower, alternating: 55/37lbs until 11th cross down from the top, and 57lbs to the bottom.

Nice

It was too springy for me.
Well I strung mine at 53 lbs and I thought it was ok. I use a lot a lot of topspin and maybe I was able to control it with spin. but I like the grab on the ball, insane amount of RPM especially on the serve. very useful when you hitting kick serve with pace in doubles. it is very effective weapon.

Hey Mareqnyc,

Nice post, I like your format very easy to read and refer back to you. I think you should give Yonex Poly Tour Spin a try. I have found that a lot guys at your level who take big cuts at the ball love this string due to it's low power and great feedback. Just string a little lower than usual due to very low power.

Mareqnyc, can you answer my question about the Big Ace? Quoted the wrong post.

Smirker what is the question exactly? So far I liked BA the most since it fits my game best, Moto 17 is a solid performer but its ranks low for the dull feel.

wouldn't alternating tensions create an inconsistent stringbed? I will try this out of pure curiosity. I do not have the x1, Isospeed Professional 17 will have to do for now.

Thanks! I read about it being very stiff and perhaps similar to Black Shark? In my experience pentagonal and hexagonal strings with edges grab the ball very well, maybe too well - the spin they create gives me trouble with controlling depth, unlike round, slick poly where the response and trajectories are much more predictable.

I have a set of RPM Team 17 will see how that goes

I couldn't get into RPM Team 17g at all, very disconnected/inconsistent feel for me. I did like Blast 17g though, so maybe we just have different tastes.

Love the chart, thanks so much for posting it!

Just the anomaly that you rate BA top in your chart but say Moto is your favourite string. Or was that someone else!? I may have confused myself which does happen occasionally. I like BA too but you don't he's much about it these days. Struggle to get it here in the UK.

Rpm team is supposed to be softer, but "feel" is such a subjective thing. Some players would say Rpm is soft, I find it muted and rather stiff...

Will add new strings to the chart as I keep restringing

It was someone else saying it was their favorite. So far I find the Head Graphene Prestige Pro with Big Ace 55/53 to compliment my game best.

Obviously I can play with almost any string and any racquet but this setup does exactly what I intend to do and thats how I measure its performance at the end of the day.

BA is not a new string. Some people on this forum swear that Pro Supex doesn't make strings, only rebrands them and that Signum Pro Poly Deluxe is the same as Big Ace. You can get a reel of SPPD for $37 in Europe!

If the fw mains are not used with the x1, you won't get the right feel/power/spin alternating tensions.
with hundreds of strings out there and if you consider hybrids it is so much the search for a perfect setup seems never ending. If you add tension variations the combinations are endless! I guess my question is: is changing tensions between strings in the matter you describe a real game changer or is it just complicating things?

It's a game changer if you have the right string/tension/harmonic for your frame. The fw mains, and the x1 were arrived at by me after a lot of experimentation. 60-45 was too tight, and 55-35 was too loose on alternating string/cross tensions, 3-11th cross down. The lower bed has to be higher, to maintain stability in the bed. I like a lot of spin, a lot of power, loud strings, and a lot of control and feel. This combination was better than the fw/vs touch by far.

You keep saying that Nostradamus I must try it then. I put it on my shopping list. How much different is it from regular TB aside of being... softer ?
it is little bit softer. but feel is much better than regular tourbite. spin is about the same, I think control is better because of better feel. I tried the new 18 G tough. got it from Tennis warehouse. Power was also surprisingly good, in same league with alu power, I think. but spin was better than alu power.

I will be trying it for sure at some point. I Have a pretty long list of setups and since it is indoor season now I don't play as often as I would like. I like to test a setup for 6-8hrs or until it breaks so things might take a while....

Is TB Soft your string of choice now or do you stick to your Pro Line X hybrid from the signature?

I was using the Alu power that pros like so much. but after trying the TB soft, I will probably switch to it. Cheaper price of tourbite has nothing to do with it. I think it just plays better. but I still give slight edge to alu power on Control department. but it is very slight.

Alu Power is a smooth round string, TB is shaped. I find that with some strings with edges (sonic pro edge, TB for example) I have issues controlling depth, it seems like they grab the ball "too much" sometimes and overspin it (it might be just my perception of things) so I lean towards round poly recently for it's more uniform and predictable response and still good enough spin for some of them. Have you noticed anything similar to this?

Have you tried Big Ace micro by any chance? Also, have you tried hybriding big ace? I'm curious to see how it plays for me with this new bout of tennis elbow (eek..).

No, that is just it. TB soft seem to give me good feel so I can feel and control the depth. I just hit out with big time topspin and it lands within 1-2 inches of the baseline. and I feel like I am getting like 3000 rpms...or so.

I used to have a big tennis elbow problem 2 years ago, I tried EVERY STICK ON THE PLANET that is known for being arm friendly but ultimately what helped me was technique and then gradually switching to 12+ ounce racquets. I had a pro look at my strokes and he figured I squeeze the racquet too much, now I am all loose and just throw the racquet at the ball. focusing on the soft grip really helped my tennis elbow. I can play full poly now no trouble.

I haven't tried the micro, just discovered it recently will also add that to my long list of things I want to try. Big Ace died after 7 hours completely, big tension loss and non existent snap back, I never really tried hybrids aside of Volkl Psycho which I wasn't impressed with. I have some Klip Gut on the way along with Isospeed Professional ( which I loved in full bed 3-4 years ago) but no more Big Ace, so if I do a hybrid it will be something else

We have Playsight installed at 2 courts here in Flushing and I tested some string/racquet setups for spin, speed etc. There is this big debate if it is the string or technique and based on the Playsight results I could get 3500 rpm on my forehand regardless if I hit with textured or smooth string which I found quite surprising. If my intention was spin, it was there and as long as it was any polyester spin was awesome. I hit a few over 3.5k rpm forehands with 18x20 Babolat Pure Strike Tour and Big Ace 1.28!

The whole subject of spin in terms of GEAR we use seems overrated I think. No string or racquet will fix the swingpath of the stroke at the end of the day.

Also it doesn't get much better in terms of comfort with polyester than Big Ace or Silverstring at 50lb...

LOL...maybe it is just me. but I feel like I was getting much more RPM with Tourbite soft than alu power. and feel was so good, I had good control of depth of shots
