2020 ATP Finals - Official Thread

Yeah, just saying that if it would be tough for Rublev (assuming he wins today) to pass Nadal (assuming he wins on Thursday). He'd have to make up a 10 game deficit.

And Nadal is currently +3 in games and Rublev would be -6 (if he wins this set 7-5) or -7 (if he wins this set 7-6).

Players who have won exactly 1 Major Title and whether that over- or under-rates them

Stich - Underrated -beat peak Edberg & Becker to win Wimbledon 1991 -won WTF 1993, going 5-0 & beating peak Sampras in the final -Masters Series titles on clay & hard -year-end #2 in 1993 -finals at both the French & U.S. Open -won the 1992 Grand Slam Cup, beating Edberg, Krajicek, Sampras &...

Aside from slam count, which Single factor most significant ?

I'm not saying that either stat favors Nadal. I'm just saying that, all else being equal, I'd prefer a player with, say, 6 Majors, 2 YE#1s, and 50 weeks at #1 to a player with, say, 6 Majors, 1 YE #1, and 70 weeks at #1.

Aside from slam count, which Single factor most significant ?

They do largely overlap, but, all things being equal, years at #1 should be more important. Assume Player A & Player B enter, say, 2025 as co-#2. Player A wins the Australian Open to take #1 and holds it for most of the year, with Player B finally overtaking Player A for #1 by winning WTF...

2020 Roland Garros Mens QF: Dominic Thiem [3] vs Diego Schwartzman [12]

The strategy of Diego coming into net when he hits a shot that is likely to produce a slice backhand from Thiem is paying dividends. It will be interesting so see whether Dominic is able to make an adjustment.

2020 Roland Garros - General Discussion (ATP)

Medvedev also lost to Chung in the SF of the 2017 Next Gen ATP Finals in a 5 setter, but it was first-to-4 games each set: 4-1, 4-1, 3-4, 1-4, 4-0

Weeks @ #1 vs you know what ...

I don't see an issue here, but maybe I'm missing something. Player A is ostensibly the best player in 2020 and thus justifiably finishes year-end #1. Player B is then the best player from February 2020-February 2021, May 2020-May 2021, August 2020-August 2021, etc. But, Player A was the best...

Weeks @ #1 vs you know what ...

But I don't really see the problem with this. For example, Agassi was #1 for 30 weeks in 1995. Sampras was #1 for only 22 weeks in 1995. But Sampras was year-end #1 because he was the better player over the course of 1995 as a whole. The way I see it, (a) Sampras definitely should have been...

Weeks @ #1 vs you know what ...

    This isn't about YEC, it's about YE#1.

Weeks @ #1 vs you know what ...

Why? Player A could win WTF in, say, 2024, and then have a very similar 2025 as Player B, with Player B finally getting #1/YE#1 by winning WTF at the end of the year in 2025. In this scenario, Player B was the best player in 2025.

Weeks @ #1 vs you know what ...

But isn't that more of an indictment of weeks at #1?

Weeks @ #1 vs you know what ...

All else being equal, Years at #1 > weeks at #1, in my opinion. Assume Player A & B have identical years outside of 2 years in which Player A was Year-End #1 (spending a combined 30 weeks at #1) and Player B spent a combined 60 weeks at #1 but did not finish Year-End #1. Player A would be the...
