On the centenery of his birth: a Jaroslav Drobny appreciation thread

I was 7, so 5 years younger. I think Drobny's win had a bit more emotion because of his history of becoming a stateless exile after WW2. I suppose in a way Ivanisovic was a bit of a tennis exile, banished to the ranks of the unwashed no-hopers before his triumphant return:)

On the centenery of his birth: a Jaroslav Drobny appreciation thread

His win against Rosewall was the great Wimbledon story of my youth. The triumph after so many near misses. It stayed that way until, ironically, Rosewall himself was in the Drobny role against Connors. That was not to be, but finally we had Ivanisovic winning in 2001. For younger tennis watchers...

Which 2000s player’s career was most negatively impacted by injury?

Joachim Johansson should also be on the list I think.

Tournament wins/ entries percentage in open era

Can you calculate the percentage for Federer when he was the same age as Nadal and Djokovic? I am curious how it might have changed in the past 5/6 years.

Best female athletes of the 1970's

Best female athletes of the 1970's

If we stray a little from the 70s to the 80s then another name that comes in is of course Mandlikova.

    Where does Nastase rank?

For me, probably #1 in the tier of male players I would like to watch again, and I have watched a lot.

Best female athletes of the 1970's

I agree with you, I only put Wade's name in there because I think as an pure athlete she justifies being in the discussion, certainly ahead of Casals and Turnbull. Her actual game could be a bit wild, which is why she isn't up there with the others in terms of results, but as an athlete she...

Best female athletes of the 1970's

I think Wade may actually have been the best athlete. She was fast, mobile and strong enough. I think where she was lacking was in technique and mentality She liked flashy winners (I remember reading interviews with both her and Francosie Durr where they said they both preferred to go for flashy...

Best female athletes of the 1970's

If you are going to include Casals and Turnbull then I would certainly include Wade. Great athlete and stronger than those two. Other names in that tier behind the very top group I would include Morozova and Tegart-Dalton for movement, and Kerry Reid for overall athleticism, although a bit on...

    Advance Australia Fair

This is not about comparing. It is about which records are going to be 'easier' or harder to beat. Rosewall is under threat over the next 5/6 years from Federer (unlikely, but you never know), Nadal (?), Djokovic (possible). Then safe for probably another 10-15 years. Laver is under threat...

    Advance Australia Fair

I wonder what the odds were that at the end of 2021 Laver would still be last man to win a CYGS Rosewall would still be the oldest slam finalist and winner Court would still be the womens singles slam record holder and which of those records will last longest?

Alcaraz... Be careful before jumping on his bandwagon...

One reason for getting on the bandwagon - he is 1.85m (6'1"). Right in the height sweet spot.
