Picking A Big Ol' Fight With Schmke

I wrote this about 2 years ago, seems like we are of a similar mind on this idea.

Solving the Riddle: The Perfect Stack

I don't like stacking because it reduces the likelihood of each individual match being competitive. If the stack is successful it usually means the weakest player/doubles team from one team plays against the best from the other team, creating a boring worthless match. Here is what I would do...

Relocating to Portland, OR in the fall.

The Portland local league had 10 teams in 5.0 18+ mens. I wouldn't say there are "very few 5.0s in Oregon". There were 18 teams in the 4.5 mens league, and 26 in men's 4.0. I know those aren't NorCal numbers but there are plenty of players at all of those levels. Last year the Portland 4.5...

    Radical Idea for USTA leagues

I like your idea. It would be much easier to change people's rankings than to change the names of the divisions. The USTA could just add a 0.25 boost to everyone's rating for 2 years, then remove it. It would be easier for players to keep track of. I suspect that a regularly scheduled...

    Radical Idea for USTA leagues

If these guys you speak of are in the lower 1/2 of the 3.5 class, then when it went to 3.25 they would play against the upper half of 3.0, which might be fun for them. If these guys are in the upper half of 3.5, they would only play against lower 4.0s, which might not be that bad for them...

    Radical Idea for USTA leagues

What if every few years (let's say 2 for the sake of argument) the USTA changed the leagues. Instead of doing 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, etc, they change to 3.25, 3.75, 4.25, 4.75. Then after 2 more years they would change back to 3.0, 3.5, 4.0. USTA already calculates all the rankings to 0.01 so there...

post your shoes before the shoe warranty claim

Does anyone know if they check the color on the returns? I had a pair of nike lunars in blue that I got as a warranty replacement from a previous nike shoe. They wore out, so I bought another pair of lunars in white/pink/blue. I got injured so I didn't play much and didn't wear out the white...

Does result of win or Loss affect one's NPRT rating?

Is it true that the 10 point match tiebreaker only counts for 1 game? This always seemed odd to me. Given that it is 10 points long instead of 4, it seems like it should count for 2-3 games. And given that the person who wins it always wins the match, it would be a way of giving a little more...

    The gut/poly thread

I'm using gut/poly in a pure drive and I love it. I have had excellent durability putting string savers in a 6 x 6 pattern in the highest wear area right after stringing.

    "plus" leagues....

Like everything, there are more possibilities than the negative situations that have been described. I am a middle of the road 5.0. I played singles this week against a team with a 5.5. Sure enough the 5.5 played singles against me. First set he beat me 6-2, but at the end of the set I...

    The gut/poly thread

I really love the gut/poly hybrid and I plan to stick with it. I think the thing that makes it good for me is not that the launch angle is particularly high or low, but that it seems really consistent. When I was using all poly or poly/syn gut, I felt like when I hit the ball in the...

    The gut/poly thread

My first gut/poly job I didn't use the elastocross savers and the gut frayed pretty quickly. I put a few elastocross in but not enough and it broke after about 12-14 hours of play. The next 2 jobs I put the elastocross in right away in a 6x6 square where i hit the ball the most. In these I...

    The gut/poly thread

Funny, I just re-read what I wrote about the vs/max power combo when I first tried it last week and at that time I said it had lots of spin. Guess I'm just getting greedy and want more!

    The gut/poly thread

I agree with your description of the feel of the vs/max power combo. It has good control but just doesn't have the heavy bite that i'm looking for. I think I will try the SPPP and see if that gives me more of what I'm looking for. The problem is that there are just so darn MANY polys to try...

    The gut/poly thread

I am hitting with my babolat vs 17 mains @ 56, Kirsh Max Power 17 crosses at 52 in a pure drive. I like it a lot but want a tiny bit more bite and spin. Power level is good. About to string up my other racket with the rest of the babolat vs in the mains. Which of the polys I have sitting in...
