It's a unicode character from the iPhone's emoji keyboard. You can copy and paste them from any unicode table, though. I copied and pasted the following ones from http://apps.timwhitlock.info/emoji/tables/unicode, rather than typing them on my keyboard. Keep in mind that they will display differently on some operating systems, but any modern OS should be consistent with what you see...
