Roger chose to receive in the Wimbledon final

He knew that Cilic would be nervous in his first Wimbledon final and that he has a tendency to go for, and miss, a lot before he finds his range. It nearly worked too - Cilic missed a few pretty routine shots in the first game.

Smart move from Fed. I reckon by deuce in the first game Federer knew he had Cilic's number that day.

Fed almost always elects to serve first when he wins the toss, so to have Cilic serve first was pretty much an in-your-face "I bet you're going to choke your first service game" move. Bold and very very smart against the fragile minded Cilic (he can hide behind his beard but he's still quite the gentle giant - and an even bigger "crybaby" than Wawrinka ;).

Standard tactic against big servers, try to break before they get rhythm.
With Federer he's a better leader so probably better to serve first. Made no difference in this match anyway. I gave Federer 60% chance to win in 3 before start. Federer was a clear favorite at beginning of Tournament and definitely at beginning of this match. Nothing was going to change that.

What were the calls in each?
I don't really know, but resorting to memories of Fedal 2006-09, it always was Federer choosing to serve or Nadal choosing to receive. The examples of Montecarlo 2008 and Madrid 2009 must be that Federer, in order to change things and "play the Nadal mindgames", he resorted to choosing to receive.

Cunning move from a highly experienced Wimbledon finalist playing someone making his debut in a final on Centre Court and who he suspected would probably be nervous. It might have backfired but, not surprisingly, his instinct for these things proved sound once again.
