I admire Nadal's fight and grit but I question continuing a match injured then pulling out in the next.

Given Nadal's track record with knee issues, surely retiring for the sake of his physical well being would be paramount but there are factors like his adrenaline, his fighting spirit and will to win. It's not a rub salt into wounds thread as I want him to be injury free and play regularly.

I really wanted to see Federer and Nadal go at it, that's a marquee match, it's like Hogan vs Austin or the Rock vs Austin, it puts backsides into seats.

I’m pretty sure their share of the winnings and points earned increases the farther you go in a tournament. So I’m sure he pushed himself to get through to the semifinals. Not saying Rafa needs money or anything. He’s a competitor and an athlete, I don’t think he ever wants to concede unless he absolutely has to.

Agree. It's a terrible thing for a prestigious tournament like IW to miss out on a SF. Especially when it seemed we were going to see a Fedal SF. What an anticlimax.

Guys gut it out in the match hoping they'll wake up the next day feeling better. It's harder at a tournament like this where this is no rest day, but players owe it to themselves to try to win any match they start.

Nadal is extremely familiar with this injury, and knows he will mostly likely not be able to playing the semis. I think he wanted the win, period. Is anyone really surprised he pulled out?

Well, people would complain retiring from QF and they would complain for not showing up for the SF. For Nadal, maybe he is looking to regain the ATP #1 slot, points in IW would help that? But, I guess he will now skip Miami, comeback for clay season...

OP, had Rafa lost to Khachanov then said he had an injury many would accuse him of faking the injury to save face for losing to KK. He pulled out after winning the match so no one can accuse him of not being injured.

Honestly, Nadal can do whatever he wants. Organizers know how tennis is, and these situations can happen - I wonder what happen with the people who paid for this match, do they get a refund?

Unfortunately, not. At least Djokovic and Haas put on an impromptu exho dubs match for the fans, so they didn't feel like they got too ripped off.

Come on, that is like to be offered a Rolex, and end with a cheap Walmart watch LOL

I have to say that organizers should refund the money. You have being offered something (and maybe paid in advance some time ago) and then you receive nothing - tournaments like this make so much money that this wont be difficult to fulfill

They'll only do it the cases where inclement weather forces the cancellation of matches. It's always a risk when you go buy tickets for a tennis match or matches, that retirements and walkovers might transpire. It's the same thing if you bought a ppv boxing match and the dude gets knocked out in the second round. There goes about 60 bucks for all of 5 minutes of action.

it was up to khachanov....he had to beat an injured player.
what should nadal do...as a sportsmen you don´t think about the next game. you keep your focus on the current game. i dot think that any sportler in the world would present a win to the opponent because of thinking "i can´t play next round"...

by the way it´s about money and points too...

for the crowd it is very bad not to see a match...if its a first round or a final...so i think it should be possible that a "lucky looser" gets the spot...
i know its not the best way but the people deserve a match - not an exibition or a no show.

Nadal is the ultimate warrior and will keep playing until he drops. I don't hold Nadal's retirements and withdrawals against him at all. There is a huge sense of pride in finishing the match.

I would like to see Nadal manage his schedule better to prevent future injuries. But I understand that he just wants to play. That is the lion in him.

Such a lion. Finished 1 of the last 18 hard court events he has entered. Calls for the trainer every time he's in trouble. Throws shade at people who actually defeat him. Blatantly cheats in matches.

He doesn't "just want to play." He just wants to win and will twist himself into pretzels to avoid losing.

One thing is 60 seconds of action and another is zero seconds, nada, nothing, of action. And in the event of heavy weather condition ending in matched cancelled, AFAIK, there are zero refunds.
