That said I'm rooting for him in his comeback. I think he legitimately loves to play and is coming back just for the battle. I have to love that. Plus I do think he's a cool guy and I like his sense of humor.

Andy Murray hopes the China Open attendances improve after only a handful of supporters showed up to his opening matches.
The Brit has won back-to-back singles ties for the first time since undergoing hip resurfacing surgery.
"Last couple of days in terms of atmosphere it's been not as good as you would like,” Murray said.
However, he is hopeful of improvement for his mouthwatering clash with Thiem.
He added: ”I think as the tournament goes on you tend to get better crowds towards the end of the week.
"I don't know if I'm complaining about it, but I'd like it to be bigger crowds and nicer atmospheres.

Tokyo was sold out, but only 10,000 seat stadium. Beijing's former Olympic site has 15,000 and 10,000 seat stadiums. Economy in China not its usual red hot self these days may not be helping.
What I don't get is how Beijing has double the purse.

I am convinced that the problem's cause is something that no one has talked about much yet: stadium architecture. Beijing center court is basically the worst version of Madrid's Caja Magica and French Open's court-PC style design: an "all VIP" lower ring with each few couple of seats —some of which fancy wide sofas— are all separated by walls on three sides, plus here and there are what looks like tables or whatever other redundant "furniture" it is. And then the whole lower ring itself is separated from the upper ring by multiple thick layers of rings consisting corporate skyboxes and advertisement bars... all of whch takes up visual real estate. And then finally high up above, in the dark shadows of the roof are the poor "real" crowd, who aren't able to go downstairs to sit in the lower area even if they were allowed (since the upper ring is physically too isolated from not only the court but everything below it .
This is bad. We all know eveyrone downstairs is on a "company ticket". The total number of seats down there is already small and on top of that filled with the kind of people who may not show up even if they have a ticket (since they didn't buy it). Leading to a never ending series of "occupied but empty" seats that the orgnaizers are reluctant to resell since it's sold already.
My solution: knock down the fancy seats surrounded by walls, bring some of the upper tier "ticket buyers" seats downstairs

He is right. Stands are 80% empty during day sessions weekdays. It's really poor for the image of tennis and for its promotion. I know the money talks and China being one of the biggest markets out there can have anything they want, maybe except a slam but who knows what happens one day. Still they don't even have a single player in the TOP100 if I'm not mistaken. That's crazy.
