Zverev 8 in the RTL?

How is Zverev 8th in the Race to London?! Does he just play a lot? Feels like he’s had a brutal year; I can’t think of where the points are coming from.

Wow.. same. Thought he'd be somewhere in the 20s.

I see #7-13 are all close though so things could change.

"Man is like a block of raw iron. Only through intense pressure and tribulation can he transform to steel."

I know this is describing Djoker, but it is truly a great quote. You can use it to help you in the moments of despair and failure. I actually use it to think of Feds greatest failures. Failed many times against Rafa, which is why AO17 was so awesome. But I also use it when thinking of Fed winning another slam. Essentially winning another one will mean even more after the WC debacle. Cool quote.

He was 12th going into the China Open, but that SF bumped him into 8th. Now he has to finish the season out strong.

The field has just been awful this year besides exactly 6 players. If Zverev makes it it’ll be one of the most undeserved spots in a while. As Kyrgios reminded us, he has zero top 10 wins this year.

You can always look up his points breakdown:

He has 2255 points this year so far. 360 from the RG QF, and 180 each for USO and AO R4. 180 each for two Masters QFs, 90 more for a Masters R16. 300 for a final at an ATP500, 180 each for semis at two more ATP500s. 250 for a win at an ATP250. A scattering of a few more 90-point and 45-point results.

He hasn't had any great tournaments, but he's had a lot of middling ones.

Awful is pushing it - Wawrinka, Del Potro, Raonic and Murray are/were injuried. With the ranking system being around, you can't actually claim that something is undeserved because everything is measured with points. If Zverev makes it as a top 8 which he would likely do than he deserves it, not to mention that its quite likely that he wins one of the remaining Masters.

Also Zverev coming in as the 7th or 8th seed could provide a great dept for WTF

Them being injured doesn’t make the field less awful, it contributes to it. They’re not consistent or true threats to big titles anymore. For Zverev I mean of course he technically deserves it if he makes it, I’m saying that there are other players who have had really good years with a lot of good wins and titles, while Zverev has just basically benefited off his seeding and won matches here and there until he crossed an actually in-form player.

And it’s far from “quite likely” that he wins one of the Masters. Most of the rest of the top 10 is still playing better than he is.

I think its because 4, 5, and 6 players are relatively strong and the points hurdle looks like it may be at an all time low this year for the 7th and 8th spots.

Zverev has put Thiem to shame with his schedule as well. As bad as his year has been he's kept his Recent Elo in the top 20 the whole time.

AO 4R, FO QF, USO 4R, Finals of Acapulco, SF of China.

That is more than enough for YEC .. Remember guys like Busta , Isner made it to YEC in this era and we have Agut, Fognini coming in this year.
You forgot to mention Tipsarevic.;)

At the same time probably one of the most talented players to be in 7th or 8th spot. Much better than the alternative and of course Zverev beat Djokovic and Federer last year to take WTF. Not sure if undeserved is the word. The points total for 7 and 8 will likely be under 3000.
2012 top 8:
1 Novak Djokovic (SRB) 11,420 17
2 Roger Federer (SUI) 9,465 20
3 Andy Murray (GBR) 7,600 19
4 Rafael Nadal (ESP) 6,795 19
5 David Ferrer (ESP) 6,030 24
6 Tomáš Berdych (CZE) 4,405 23
7 Juan Martín del Potro (ARG) 4,080 22
8 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) 3,490 25

Nadal dumped and Tipsa came in.

2019 top 8/9:
1.Nadal R.9225 (I'm not sure the Big 3 are all that weaker, but playing retiring schedule helps field get points)
2.Djokovic N.7945+180
3.Federer R.5690+180
4.Medvedev D.5055+180 (With Mad Lad likely to come in around 6000 points, the top 4 is quite fine this year)
5.Thiem D.4525+180 (I would put Thiem's top form this year easier superior to Ferrer)
6.Tsitsipas S.3550+180 (better than Berdych)
7.Bautista Agut R.2485+90
8.Zverev A.2435+180 (greater talent than Del Po)
9.+1Berrettini M.2365+180 (Tsonga lite this year)
10.-1Goffin D.2325

Bottom line is if Nadal shows for WTF unlike 2012, 2019 is a more talented group of players overall and the last two spots will have some good playing momentum one can hope for the event. Ferrer, Bendy, and Tipsa are just a hard load on 2012 even if they did have more points for the year. Tipsa 2990.

My God man do you have amnesia about the likes of serve lite Ferrer and Bendych sitting in WTF year after year?

Zverev and Tsitsipas at likely 6 and 7 this year at least are legit contenders for the crown.

Ok for sure there's been some clowns in there recently. Carreno Busta, Tipsarevic, Sock. So maybe Zverev isn't all that outrageous.

I'm not sure if I'd call him a threat for the title though, at this point at least. Things can change in the next month, but again, as of now he's at zero top ten wins for the year.

Also, in regards to your other post, calling Zverev a better talent than Del Potro...that's a hot take right there. There is no telling how good of a career Del Potro would have had if it was not for injuries, but at Zverev's age he had taken down prime Fed and Nadal back to back in a slam. Zverev can't even beat the old, nearly retired versions of them.

Wot

I literally don't see how Zverev is more talented than Delpo in any way other than a better backhand and movement. Delpo is either just as good if not better than Zverev in just about every other category, especially when it comes to touch / feel and netplay.

Top 10 players are not clowns, if you are comparing them to the Big 4 than what we are ... ants?!
Del Potro had endless potential, as good as Zverev is, he is not shown more.
As tennis players, Federer and Nadal in 2019 are not worse than 2009, if they are it is a marginal difference here and there
