Wawrinka & Murray next 2 Seasons?

Wawrinka is 2 years older but for all intents and purposes we're looking at the next 2 seasons for viability reasons.

I start this thread based on Wawrinka & Murray being on opposite semifinals for a 250 event. Neither man has won an ATP title since 2017.

For Wawrinka I think he's inching closer back into the Top 10 (maybe even this year) so that's what I would like to see and I think is probable. Beyond that I think his time inside the Top 5 might be up barring of course a Slam title but even then that wouldn't guarantee him a spot in there given his streakiness outside Slams. For titles I think a 500 is to be expected at some point but I'd personally like for him to win that 4th Slam or make one more deep run into a Semifinal and have that match be good. Masters titles were never his forte so I'm not holding out much there.

For Murray I think Top 16 has to be the focus for decent draws at most tournaments not just Slams. I still hold out he'd have a puncher's chance at another Wimbledon, just because he could lean on his serve there and have the edge with a weak field on grass. Outside of that a 500 title at a tournament like Washington may well be a 50/50 if he continues to progress. But a Masters title should be the high but achievable goal (after all Jack Sock freaking won one didn't he?)

Good but not great.
I doubt they can reach the semifinals of the GS.
Perhaps, of them two, Murray can win a Masters 1000 but, even this, is unlikely to happen.

Stan made 2 Major QFs this year and lost them both in 4 sets. If things break the right way for him, I don't see any reason he can't make a Major SF. I need to see more from Murray before making any predictions.

It will all come down to how their respective health holds up. I think Wawrinka had a better season in 2019 compared to 2018, but it's still a notch or 2 below his full potential. He had a nice run at the USO this year and had he not been sick, I think he would've made the SF or better but anyways who knows. If he can start the season healthy and maybe play one of the warm-up in Chennai or Australia like he's done in the past to build-up his confidence, he could do some damages. The only surface you can sort of write him off is probably grass.

In Murray's case, I have to admit that what he's been able to do in the last couple of weeks is really impressive and encouraging. I'm not sure if he will be able to keep this up physically for an entire season without jeopardizing his long term health, but I think the more match play he'll get, the better he will get and for all I know, he could return into the top 8 next year.

Both could win another Slam, and I think both will make another Slam semi. The fact that both are multi slam winners counts for a lot in my book. Zero of the kids have done it.

There's no reason to believe either of these guys reach a slam semi. They're old and you regress as you get older. That's okay.

Frankly I'd be surprised if either produced another quarter appearance at this point.

Excellent poast! Wawa is 11 and counting in the Recent Elo rankings and that is fine, but agree top 5 may be a bridge too far. Your goal for the Bionic Breaker is a fair one.:p

That quarter against Federer, definitely could have won it if not should have. I believe he's only beaten Roger once in a Slam meeting so I think it's more mental. Against Medvedev, would have been interesting if he won that 1st set.

Stan has lost his movement fella, that's critical.
Yes, he still possesses the same ballstriking power off groundies & serve, can rip the ball when in position. But if he plays someone who can expose his movement (let's say fedal, thiem, med, demon, etc) he'll become an error machine

I'm a Murray fan and honestly, i think people are getting way too ahead of themselves when it comes to him. He's had a couple of good wins this week but have you guys seen him play? He's way slower than he used to be and his match fitness is obviously lacking. I mean sure, he IS hitting well but top 10 is never going to happen for the rest of his career imo and that's even given the current state of the ATP. Top 50? Sure. Top 20? At a push maybe but top 10? I don't see it. I don't wanna burst the bubble for anyone but i'm trying to be realistic here, if Djokovic and Federer are losing to the next gen then recovering Murray isn't suddenly going to dominate.

As for Wawrinka, i think he's all but done. Like someone rightly pointed out in this topic, his speed has took a massive hit and he was never that fast to begin with. He's not making top 10 again either and although I could see him snatching a couple of 250s and maybe a 500, a masters and slam are both out of his and Murray's reach in my brutally honest view.

To be fair, Murray usually benefits from a training bloc - I’m curious to see how he looks in January.

Eager to see how the next round of training with THE VIPERS goes.

Let’s be frank here: none of them keeps playing to win another 250 or 500. They are muliply slam champions, legends of this game, all time great players. And the chances of one of them winning another slam are pretty low. They are both in the twilight of their careers and have been severely damaged by serious injuries. I would love to be surprised but I wouldn’t bet my money on them winning more slams.

Wawrinka currently #15 for the year.
Never a big Masters player but made 2 Slam quarters and should have beat Roger in Paris.

So he's probable to get back inside Top 10 at least and any player that makes a Slam SF has a chance to win it.

I think Wawrinka will win a 4th slam in a big surprise. It will probably either be at the Australian or French. Very outside shot if he wins the 4th slam early enough, he could even sneak out a surprise 5th slam somewhere. I agree he will get back in the Top 10, but maybe not the Top 5. He will come close to being what he used to be in the sense of being a super dangerous floater type contender who will come up and bite people when they least expect it.

Murray is done in singles. He should focus on being a doubles specialist the remainder of his career.

I think people are desperate for both to get back to good form since there is not much else. Just 3 aging greats. Although Medvedev's rise is changing that some, but I don't think people will be completely sold on him until he actually WINS a slam, not just comes close like he did at the Open.

Stan really should have beat Roger at the French this year, but he would have lost to Nadal easily. So there of course something needs to happen with Nadal and Stan gets an easy draw to semifinals. His track record in the last 2 rounds is astounding (7-6 including his injured 2017 FO final, but of other 5 losses he went 5 sets in 3).

I think the AO or USO is his best bet. The USO if he's fresh since a lot of top players are too tired and the AO if basically Novak isn't doing well.

Of course Stan has NO shot vs Nadal at the French, that is obvious. Nadal has to lose at the French at some point though, I don't think he will win the next 3 French Opens for instance, 2 of 3 possibly. Maybe the 1 (atleast 1) in the next 3 years Stan can win if he gets a good spell of form, or maybe he can do it at the Australian or U.S Open (more likely the Australian probably) instead. I just have a hunch he will win atleast 1 more slam when nobody expects it.

Wawrinka could concievably make WTF this year if he won Paris.

Can Wawrinka be top 12 before the AO 2020?

It's almost a certainty actually. He'll only be 260 from Kei. Has Basel & Paris left. Making SF at Paris probably lands him Top 10.

Andy Murray looks more impressive then I ever thought he would. He is playing very aggressive. I miss aggressive tennis, so this might be even better than I thought for the tour if he stays healthy.

Watching the final right now and Purely from a Murray perspective, I don't think it looks good. Even if he wins this match, it's pretty evident that he just does not have the firepower on groundstrokes to dictate play, which is what he would have needed to make a dent on tour this time around. I got my hopes up earlier this week but I think I've concluded my thoughts on this. Murray won't win another slam. A few 250/500 events, yes why not

Well I think when you "only" win 2 Slams at age 25-26 & somewhat luck out at a 3rd at 29 then have serious surgery getting back into it at 33, ya probably not winning any more.

But what about a SF run?
