Venus' Mythical 2017 :)

Venus was 36/37 and had her best season in ages and led the tour in prize-money for the year. She had badass kits, badass matches, reached 2 slam finals (and was 2 points from the USO final as well), and the final of the WTA tour finals. It's a tragedy she couldn't snag one of the 3, but I just want to applaud her for getting there given her illness, setbacks, and bad form for years (which ticked up from 2014-2016 leading into this).

The kits :D

That deserved at least one slam. Would have been a fairy tale. But tennis doesn't like fairy tales, only robotic stories.

The points Sloane played in the USO semis when Venus was 2 points from the win are absolutely insane. It was like a supernatural force kept her from winning things that year :(

Also interesting she made the WTF final too. I had forgotten. Who did she lose to? Pushniacki?

Yep, she used to always beat Caroline, and then somehow Woz was the terminator that day :sneaky: it was literally the only time Caroline ever beat her

Dam, wasn't aware of the H2H. Not really a fan of Venus, or any WTA player. I just like fairness in tennis, Venus winning something in 2017 would have been fair.

Then Venus also was up 2 set point in the Wimby final first set and Mugu got POSESSED lol

Like wtf? Watching live I was so sure the match was over with how well Venus was hitting and her having 2 SP's and then.........

Venus book ended her appearances in slams by taking a bagel each end. Deserved better tbh.

Yeah, pretty much. She got one last match against her sister in a slam final, and she got one last match at W in a slam final. The two things that defined her career...her rivalry with her sister and her love for Wimbledon as the queen of grass.

Her record in third sets in 2017 was crazy good too. It was like her strength was back, but the slams were just 1 match too many for her at 37 :(

At least she got a couple of slam finals, which even then were an incredible feat considering what she had been through.

To be fair, Venus mentally checked out after missing those set points. After Muga won that first set, she loosened up and played even better and Venus played worse. Her mental toughness really failed her in her later years. It still was a great season for her though.

Was never a fan of hers in particular, but damn if I wasn't rooting hard in those 2 slam finals. Would've been a great story.

After watching that, I'm happy the non-grunter won. The shriek on fh slice was cringy. That said, Venus had a great career and seemed well liked, good on her.

Lol God forbid a 37yo woman grunts in the middle of a long rally of a 2 hour match against the USO champ (whom she just spent a enormous amount of energy bageling) while she reaches over for a slice on a ball Sloane hit hard. Never understood people that watch tennis and complain about grunting. It's just something some players do innately, and Venus always has. I barely notice it with anyone tbh.

"Some players do innately" being the key phrase here. Some do it for gamesmanship purposes and annoy the hell out of spectators with it. Plenty of tennis to be watched either on mute or without intentionally enhanced grunting. What's so hard to understand about that?

Yeah, and admittedly Serena is guilty of that which is why I was never big on her. Venus just grunts though and it never is something that messes with her opponents. That's why she's a Queen :D
