U.S. Open champion. Will appeal to Canada as she was born in Toronto. Already a legend in her adopted England. She speaks Mandarin. So add another billion fanatical followers in China. Also speaks Romanian.

Her global appeal is unprecedented.

This is your new role model.

Raducanu has attributed her mentality and ethics to her role models, tennis players Simona Halep and Li Na (who are from countries of her ancestry).

Don't think she does speak Romanian.
also ppl in comments said her mandarin was horrible.
and she smiles a bit too much too. I think that's why Fernandez made alllusions to her "fake" smile. Someone should shop Joker paint onto her face.

yep, i think trolling thirsty rdcu fans is gonna be easy money for the next few years.

I read yesterday, her lawyers raced to trademark "EMMA®", "RADUCANU®", and "Emma Raducanu®" within hours of her US Open win. Probably in preparation for a slew of new products with her moniker.

Not quick enough for some unknown entity to register emmaraducanu.com now on sale for £ 72,000.

I had a conversation about this with a native speaker and he said her Mandarin was good (tone-wise; Mandarin has 4 tones/pitch), although not native-like.
Ah, just when the nativists were relieved that because her Mandarin was terrible, she wouldn't be 'selling out' to China anytime soon.

She wouldn't be "selling out" to China. Her sponsors will ;).
I know. There was just a lot of amusing anxiety in the other thread where Canadians were trying to claim Emma as "theirs". That because she can speak Mandarin, Chinese will buy her out from LTA. Woah, woah, hold your horses guys.

Her smile makes it all possible. A limitation Osaka has, moody isn’t very attractive
I agree, but apparently the sponsors disagree. Osaka has plenty of sponsors now. She most likely can retire now from tennis and live comfortably. Although... her sponsorship terms may require her to continue playing until the end of the contract.

in what way? compared to overseas born/Western educated/mixed race Chinese kids or native speaking Chinese kids?

Her mandarin is not perfect to native speaker standard, but definitely much better than terrible. I would rate it 8/10, with 10 being native speaker.

Much better than Zucjerberg's in terms of tone and fluency. But her clips seem to be scripted. Would be interesting to hear her press conference in Mandarin.
Thanks. I don't speak it, but I can sort of tell when it sounds "different". I vaguely remember that indeed Emma's Mandarin does sound more fluent and more "flowing".

As a Mandarin speaker, I can tell you that her Mandarin is not horrible.

Is that going to be your aspiration in life?

That sounds about right.

That's pretty darn good. Most second-language learners can get relatively close to native fluency but not all the way there.

Worse you mean. Her perfection will make some people grumpy. People resent those who have it all in excess.
I agree with this sentiment. Imperfections are something people can relate to. My original comment was purely grading the poster-girl allure. Not all that in my view, but what do I know, people love all sort of things I am not into. :)

That's the way it is. If she doesn't play this year anymore it will cost her tons of money.
And if she quits playing her money fountain will end very quickly. She is no Steffi yet who got almost the same endorsement money for many years after her retirement as she received previously.

Emma, however, can reach that status.
Jo Durie is already comparing her to the GOAT:

Not sure if she's fluent and can manage a presscon in Mandarin as I saw an earlier article saying she needs to work on it. If she could, I think we shouldve seen by now at least an interview in Mandarin.

Viewer ratings for the WTA final blew away the ATP with DJO and Med, which was decent still but not a lot of draw overall compared to previous men's finals. The WTA final had one of the highest ratings in women's tennis overall, so DEFINTELY a marketing point and why the WTA is rushing to put her wonderful personality and fresh face to the front, so quickly and prominently. The ATP Still needs Fed and Raf back to help carry Djo since he doesn't draw the crowds, and the rest of the field is pretty stark for market income at this point.

Next year will be a telling sign of the furutre for both sides of the tennis coin though, but the WTA has had much better positioning with a lot of new players to pin up, where the ATP has been droning on about the Big 3, then ending of the Big 3, and wash out "nextGens" for years with not much to show.

"Smiles a too much too". She's 18 and just won the US Open. Always fun to see old guys on message boards tell pros what to do.

If she can be a consistent top10 player over the next decade and manages to win like 4-5 slams, then she definitely is imo. Sharapova came across as bit cold but Raducanu just seems to be much more positive person with a smile on face most of the time. She is pretty and especially that smile is very infectious...kind of just lights up the room. She also does seem to be interested in business side of sports and is already with IMG under Eisenbud who is the best when it comes to marketing side of tennis.

Great thread!

We shall see. Will be a very interesting contrast/comparison with Osaka who has a bigger presence and potential here in the USA (Black is still cool here in marketing terms and Osaka has inroads into such) and obviously Japan vs Radu who I assume has more natural appeal in Europe and perhaps China.

Let's go baby! Can't wait to see what will happen!

If Radu was tall, that would probably be it! She would check all the model prerequisites.

Does the time slot of the WTA final compete with the NFL? This happens every year.

You are inferring that the only reason the WTA final scored better is because the men's final always goes against the NFL schedule? So how od you explain years the WTA was down and the ATP was up? The NFL didn't matter those years?

Fact is that WTA rating was one of the highest for any tennis final event, and there was a lot of interest and excitement behind two fresh young athletes. The men's was better than watching Nadal and KAndy play, but not much.

When there is an American playing, the WTA usually beats the ATP. Serena US Opens the women's always had higher viewership.

I don't think Osaka needs to worry about money ever again. She made $60 million this year alone, which is more than almost everyone makes in their entire lives. Even if taxes and paying off her team took half of it, she can retire and live lavishly off the interest of a $30 million principal investment alone.

Emma, however, can reach that status.
Jo Durie is already comparing her to the GOAT:

Okay, Durie is going way overboard here. We should at least see how she plays on the tour for a year before making extreme judgments like that.
