Correct. White can block with pieces but loses huge material. Carlsen missed the mate in 3 threat and ended up drawing the game against Anish Giri in Tata Steel 2017. Huge miss. Ended up losing his next game in a complicated tactical affair to Rapport in the next round too, losing the lead. Pretty sure his MENTALITY has been adversely affected.
That's incredible. To be honest though, Karjakin could easily be world champion right now had he not missed a continuation in one of the later games of the WC that would've given him a draw I believe. May have been in game 9 or 10. I'll see if I can find it.
Here's the game. It's #10. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdR9vIvaUTs. All the others are on the sidebar if you're interested and haven't seen it already. This guy does a pretty good job analyzing the games IMO, but he does talk a lot.
I quite like Daniel Rensch in general. I'm still not convinced Karjakin "missed" this. He says it after.. but he had the psychological edge and he was feeling confident. I have a feeling he deliberately avoided it and wanted to prolong the game. Yeah, I just find it hard to buy that he didn't see this... but then again, Carlsen DEFINITELY missed that mate in 3 threat.. so it does happen.
