Wimbledon releasing rare gems - Rosewall next?

I would strongly doubt that any coverage that CBS did of tennis in the 1950s still exists. I'm surprised the 1969 US Open final as well as some of the early 70s was saved. US tv generally did not save stuff back then. The BBC and Wimbledon is another matter. Sure seems like they saved a lot...

Wimbledon releasing rare gems - Rosewall next?

I'm in, Moose. I'll post some comments in th youtube videos. I noticed all the uploads and was waiting for some earlier stuff. Well, they have gone back decades, but not 60s and 70s way back.

Match Stats/Report - McEnroe vs Connors, Wimbledon final, 1984

At the time I thought that was the best I'd ever seen anyone play. He just toyed with him, literally. And I'd seen Connors play matches that were so much worse than he played here. Matches where he was spraying unforced errors all over the place. That was not the case here. Certainly not...

Match Stats/Report - Wilander vs Lendl, US Open final, 1988

Good point. I hadn't thought of it that way. The edge in winners is completely offset by so many more errors. But wow, 48 and 50 more, I don't remember it being that big of a difference in the other matches you guys have done the stats. I've often stated that I thought Lendl was a better...

Match Stats/Report - Lendl vs McEnroe, French Open final, 1984

so much I learn from your stats. Stuff I've either forgotten or maybe never saw that match. Your comment about how much Lendl s/v against Mats. I hadn't remembered him ever doing it that much at the French. I may have to watch this match. My recollection was that Mac's play level fell off...

Match Stats/Report - Wilander vs Lendl, US Open final, 1988

Wow, winning wih 48 less winners. I would imagine that is a real rarity.

    Stats for 1987 Wimbledon 4th Round(Connors-Pernfors)

Wow, 6 unreturned serves in 5 sets. When I did the 1977 Wimbledon finals stats, I had Connors with only 9. I've always wondered if I made a mistake because it was so ridiculously low. Maybe not. Never would have expected that many aces or that big an unreturned serve edge for Pernfors. Not...

Match Stats/Report - Newcombe vs Connors, Australian Open final, 1975

Man, I reread my last post before looking at what you said. LOL, could there be any more errors, typos? LOL, clearly I did not proofread that one. First, I'm a slow typist. Second, I have a quastionable keyboard. Let's see if I can cut down some this time. First off, about today's play...

    Duel Match Stats/Reports - Lendl vs Connors, US Open semi-finals, 1985 & 1987

Gotta remember, Mcenroe is 24 or 25 then. And the next day starts at 4, not 1. That was not a big concern for me. Hell, I would have picked Connors over Lendl the next day and he was 32. I would have figured that momentum would carry thim through, No, Mcenroe didn't play like he had at...

    Duel Match Stats/Reports - Lendl vs Connors, US Open semi-finals, 1985 & 1987

You favored Lendl going into the 1984 final? I mean after the matches were over Saturday, NO, not me. It's not like Lendl beat Cash decisively. He faced, what, 2 match points? I had Mcenroe as a very clear favorite. Not prohibitive, but pretty damn clear favorite. I did think he had a...

    Duel Match Stats/Reports - Lendl vs Connors, US Open semi-finals, 1985 & 1987

Pretty lopsided points wise. I hadn't remembered it being that bad. I sure remember Connors limping. Same here with Mcenroe. I thought for sure he'd win. The 5 setter he played Saturday didn't bother me. That was the first match of the day. His 5 setters against Connors in 80 and 84...

Match Stats/Report - Newcombe vs Connors, Australian Open final, 1975

As I said, Connors wasn't Mcenroe bad. But just like with not coming to the net like Laver or Newcombe, that doesn't mean he wasn't bad. Well, Nastae would be another player that I think was tougher on umpires. Is whether he got defaulted the standard? In my mind, it's really abusing the...

Match Stats/Report - Newcombe vs Connors, Australian Open final, 1975

My post has too many characters. Here is part 2 I can give you another time where Connors expresses regret about how he player 78 Wimbledon. You can find it on youtube. A Tony Trabert interview with Connors and Borg after th Pepsi final, where Borg beat him 2 and 3. The video is just of...

Match Stats/Report - Newcombe vs Connors, Australian Open final, 1975

First off, here is the s/v breakdown I have for the 1978 Vitas match. 43 of 50 on 1st serves and 28 of 37 on 2nd. Obviously, this shows that he doesn't fear the Vitas return as much, but the disparity in s/v % between the semis and finals is still glaring. Now, I am absolutely not saying he...

Match Stats/Report - Becker vs Connors, Queen's Club final, 1987

No, that was thw 1981 French. Borg didn't play the tour in 1982. Then he started playing exhibitions and special events later in the year. IIRC, Wilander beat Lendl at the 82 French. Still, he won the Masters and Dallas and made the finals of another grand slam. Also, just skipped...

Match Stats/Report - Becker vs Connors, Queen's Club final, 1987

Don't enjoy knocking Collins because, by all accounts I've ever heard, he was a great guy. Still, didn't make me obliged to agree with everything he said. It was kind of like when Lendl beat Connors 1 and 1, in Cincy, a couple weeks before the 82 US Open. When they asked Connors about it...

Match Stats/Report - Becker vs Connors, Queen's Club final, 1987

I don't want to misrepresent Collins. I don't recall him saying he was awful, but I thought he let Lendl's reputation at net influence more than the way he was actually volleying. I seem to recall the word uncomfortable more than awful. Meanwhile, I think he's been volleying well to very well...

Match Stats/Report - Becker vs Connors, Queen's Club final, 1987

He did it because it was th 80s and that's how you played on grass. You didn't win Wimbledon by coming in as much as Lendl did in those days on other surfaces. Borg didn't come in on the 2nd serve, but he did almost all his 1st serves. You could certainly argue that maybe Lendl shouldn't have...

    Stats for 1987 Queen's Final(Becker-Connors)

No, 84 is not about him not going full blown s/v. I think it was about Connors specifically. Check out th 83 semi vs Mcenroe. He s/v on every serve. That is pretty much how Lendl played at Wimbledon 1983 on. Well, by my memory of the matches I've seen. You weren't seeing all the matches...

Match Stats/Report - Becker vs Connors, Queen's Club final, 1987

My knee jerk reaction is to say Lendl would have beaten Connors since he had done so, handily, a bunch of times in the last couple years. Thing is, how does Lendl play? He has benn s/v on both serves. He has never beaten Connors this way. In their 1984 Wimbledon match, he s/v a lot less than...

Match Stats/Report - Newcombe vs Connors, Australian Open final, 1975

Nice to chat with you too, Wasp. I've said it a couple times, but since it's so true, I'll say it again. Your stats are awesome. I don't know how you have the patience to do them in such painstaking detail, but it's that detail that makes them so revealing. Regarding Connors and umpires and...

    Connors in 5

Yeah, that is the one. Nadal did it this year. Couple things first. The French player he came back against at the 1980 French was Jean Francois Caujolle. Something like that. He had beaten Connors a couple weeks before at Monte Carlo. I think Caujoll really sort of choked that match away...

Match Stats/Report - Newcombe vs Connors, Australian Open final, 1975

I'm guessing maybe for the same reason a lot of players skipped it. It was over the holidays and really far away. And Grand Slams weren't viewed the same way then. Certainly not this Grand Slam. The field in 1975 isn't deep. It's got Connors and Newcombe, but the majority of the top players...

Match Stats/Report - Newcombe vs Connors, Australian Open final, 1975

For comparison sake, I also had Connors s/v 84 times, but I had 74 of 95 on 1st and 10 of 40 on 2nd. I had him 110 times at net. 72 of 110. Bit of difference there. Probably my error, Wasp. Your stats are SO much more comprehensive than mine. While Connors had some light hearted moments, I...

Match Stats/Report - McEnroe vs Connors, French Open semi-final, 1984

My memory is that Mcenroe serving % being in the 50s, or even high 40s, was not that unusual. I used to think that if he served 60% or above that he was serving well. He wasn't gong to be in the 70s like Connors, but he served so much bigger.

Match Stats/Report - McEnroe vs Connors, French Open semi-final, 1984

I think USA showed the match on tape delay. By that point they were showing second week action that way. NBC had the finals live. Pretty big point differential, although nothing like Wimbledon. While I thought the red clay would help Connors specifically towards Mcenroe, I was not expecting...

    Laver and Connors in 1975

We have one big difference in our stats. I have Laver 33 of 42 at net. I include in that number serves, on which Laver was clearing s/v, that Connors did not get back in play. I also have Connors at 14 of 21. I just redid this match in the last maybe 6 months. You use the word...

    Ivan Lendl vs Jimmy Connors?

You can say that again. With all the prep work he did for it, it was obvious how much a Wimbledon title meant to Lendl As far as weapons go, serve aside(and no denying that is a big aside), I don't see some huge edge for Lendl. Connors' groundstrokes, his return of serve, were big weapons.

Remembering Vitas Gerulaitis 25 years on

Greatest post match press conference line of all time. After beating Connors at the Masters, breaking a streak of 16 consecutive losses to Connors. "Nobody beats Vitas Gerulaitis 17 times in a row."

Match Stats/Report - Lendl vs Connors, Stratton Mountain semi-final, 1985

I still get what Wasp is saying. Mcenroe was more prone to occasionally just plant himself on the baseline and hit essentally half volleys. Against someone like a Vilas I pretty distinctly recall him doing this more than Connors. Doesn't mean Connors couldn't or didn't do it some, but not...
