Obviously, the net cord was not tightened to spec.

How often does your indoor facility clean up the fuzz?

I play at an indoor facility in Northern California (Fremont;). The club certainly hasn't washed the courts in a year plus (pretty disgusting). I regularly see extreme fluff after someone has used one of the ball machines, but it's residue is usually gone after a few days. There doesn't seem...

    Footwork preference

Pretty difficult to be definitive here as many, if not, most movements should be in anticipation of your opponents next shot or heading to the "best" court position based on your shot. However, an initial "cross step" offers greater court coverage capability the vast majority of the time.

    Almost...

Just an FYI, per your description, you committed a cardinal sin of Tennis - NEVER change a winning game ! You were serving at 5-1 or 5-2 (?), 'and thought you'd change it up' to play a bit of S&V ? And what exactly were you thinking ?

USTA rating system now--I haven't played USTA in ten years

How about if you do something that seems to be unusual;) find some friends to hit with that are already playing leagues or tournaments, decide how you compare against them, ask them their rating, then objectively and honestly base your self rating on this assessment. This is of couse in sharp...

What do you Think about during the Warm ups?

Pretty simple, I think about how I want to "warm up", then pay attention to what my opponent(s) seem to be capable of doing.

    Do you remember when...

I'm definitely old school . . . almost always ask for all three balls before I start serving (always later in a match as the balls are often wearing unevenly), always start with two in one hand (one in pocket) and carry a ball when first serve goes in. Even further, when my partner misses a...

    What Annoys you the Most?

Had a "kid" on one of my teams a few years ago. With virtually every match he played (90% singles), there was always some sort of conflict. He regularly accused his opponents of cheating, 'they were always making bad line calls and running various gamesmanship tactics'. He always claimed he...

    Fellow Fat Players!

Just found this thread. Very entertaining. I'm a month shy of 58, 5' 11" and close to 235. I play very competitive 4.5 -5.0 doubles (norcal - adult, 40+ and 55s). Still have a decent serve, better hands and techinically volley better than the vast majority of guys I run across. Also...

I would also suggest stopping by San Pablo park. They have a very active group of solid players from 4-5+, lots of competitive USTA teams and generally a pretty good group of people.

5.5 and up is good enough for me

You should go see the UT Austin tennis team. Better still, go in the spring when they're having a match or tournament on site. They have been a consistent top 25 D1 team (23 as of today). From there, Baylor (Waco) is currently #12 and Texas A&M (College Station) is #14 (that's it for the top...

Your Biggest comeback in USTA league or Tournament?

Playing an evening league doubles match a few years ago, my partner and I were down a set and 0-5, 0-40, with the other team serving. My partner and I closed the net and the other team hit what we all thought was a perfect top spin lob over us. It ultimately landed out by an inch or so (no...

Norcal Umpires - Want To Become One?

Just one persons opinion: It is very thankless. Went through the program many years back. Very slow, assumes you know very little. Took a couple classes with people that hardly knew the basics (many seemed to be blind as well). At least these days you can get paid something, still not...
