Minus their best surface, who's the greatest?

Federer minus grass; Nadal minus clay; Djokovic minus hard. Probably been debated but I didn't see it. Who's the best if you take away their best surface?

Kneissl Silver Arrow - Any information?

I recently picked up another odd racket. I've never seen this particular racket before. Based on the graphite composition and the head size I'm guessing that it dates from the late 1970's, maybe very early 1980's. It wears a WCT (World Championship Tennis) sticker which isn't much help but...

    Greatest individual achievement in tennis

Like the title says, what is the greatest individual achievement in all of tennis? It can be something "big" like Rod Laver winning the calendar year grand slam twice or Steffi Graf winning the calendar year golden slam or something "small" like Sam Querrey hitting 10 aces in a row against...

    Hall of Fame

Do you think a player, on playing accomplishments only, can make the Hall of Fame if they are never year end number 1 and never win a major? For example, what if they display never before seen consistency. Year end top 5 for 15 straight years? 25 straight major semi finals? 50 straight...

    Tennis geometry is fun!

Here is an eight-sided "Mall Octagon" racket: and here is an eight-sided "Dunlop Polygon" racket: Both eight-sided and both correctly named. "Octa" meaning eight and "Poly" meaning many. ;)

    Wilson Hyper Pro Staff Carbon 5.0 (12 x 16)

I just picked up an interesting variant of the Wilson Hyper Pro Staff Carbon 5.0. This one is standard length, 95 sq in head, 12.3 ounces strung, but drilled with a 12 x 16 pattern. I'm quite tempted to hit with it just to feel the spin from such a wide string pattern in such a stiff racket...

    Golf shaft rackets

I recently picked up a Tensor Fiber Glass mono-shaft which appears to be constructed with a fiber glass golf shaft. It got me thinking about how many other manufacturers in the 60's through early 80's used golf shafts in their racket design. Here is a picture of some of the golf shaft rackets...

    Seamless Rosewall spaghetti strung

I've seen many 70's era rackets spaghetti strung but I've never seen the Seamless/Seamco spaghetti strung. I recently came upon a stash of NOS rackets so I decided to take a crack at spaghetti stringing one. My advise: don't! What a PIA. If I had to do it again, I think I'd put in two more mains...

    Kneissl experts?

I think the yellow "Professional" is the original Vario and the white version came along later. Both in the early 80's. Is this correct? image url upload

    Pirelli Technort Stratos

I just picked up a very interesting Pirelli Technort Stratos. These are fairly hard to come by and significantly more "over engineered" than other rackets that can be taken apart - like the Jenro. Here are some pictures: Does anyone have any other Pirelli models?

    Dunlop Superlong 5.00

Who can tell me about this behemoth? I've been collecting rackets for quite some time but I've never run across this one. I thought the Gamma Big Bubba 32" was the only 32" racket. Are there others? Here is a picture of the Dunlop next to the Gamma. Dunlop also made another "illegal"...

Version 2 rackets that didn't make the design any more popular

I've got two version "2" rackets where the redesign of the original unconventional racket did not seem to help much. Can anyone think of others? Here are the two Ergonoms. Ergonom I had a more squared off head compared to the more oval Ergonom II and, of course, a different color scheme but...

    Illegal rackets

All of these rackets have been deemed illegal for sanctioned tournament play. Who wants to say why? P.S. I think a good argument could be made that three are not really illegal under a literal reading of the rules and another one could easily be made legal prior to play.

Help me identify this vintage stringing tool

I bought a box of vintage string and tools and it contained an unusual awl. I've been stringing rackets for 40 years and haven't run across this tool. Is it used like modern "pathfinder" awls, to help push/pull strings through tight holes? The box also contained a package of four more of the...

Grommet strip for Kneissl Aero 30C

I'm taking a shot in the dark here but does anyone have the grommet strip Kneissl used to cover the string in the grommets of the Aero 30 club? The strip was used to seal off the holes which in theory decreased the aerodynamic drag of the racket. Here is a picture of the racket on edge with...
