Tennis Warehouse Playtester Debate: Are Classic Racquets Still Relevant?

Spec wise, it fits the Classic players racquet they discussed in the pod cast. I just received my BA’s and will post up a review when I have had adequate time to play test them.

    In praise of Kevlar/ZX hybrid!!!

One person claiming Kevlar is the devil over and over an over again. Vs. Everyone else who actually uses Kevlar. If you follow the useful advice from those who actually use this hybrid, there is not a lot of risk.

New Pro Kennex Black Ace series 2020

I strung up and modified one of my Black Aces yesterday and came up with some numbers for those interested. The strings used were Ashaway Kevlar mains with Ashaway Monogut ZX crosses (tends to run a bit lighter than most other string set ups due to the Kevlar). Removed the stock grip and...

    In praise of Kevlar/ZX hybrid!!!

Tried an experiment yesterday when I was stringing up my Pro Kennex Black Ace 315. I increased the prestretch % on my machine from 15% up to 25% using the Kev/ZX hybrid. For the PK BA, I chose to start out at 60 lbs x 48 lbs with its 16x19 pattern/100 sq in headsize as a starting point. By...

New Pro Kennex Black Ace series 2020

Just cracked open the box with my Black Aces inside and I must say I was impressed. Both racquets came in individual PK racquet bags, I had thought that this process had been discontinued across all manufacturers but PK is still doing it. They are nothing exotic, but they will protect the...

Tennis Warehouse Playtester Debate: Are Classic Racquets Still Relevant?

Under the radar moden Classic: Pro Kennex Black Ace 315. Head light, RA in the 50’s. Nod to the modern with an open 16x19 and kinetic tech.

New Pro Kennex Black Ace series 2020

I am not sure how much different the BA will be from the Phantom 93P comfort wise. The larger head and more open pattern will play a little softer and the Kinetic system will also reduce some additional shock, but the Phantom 93P is already a pretty plush racquet. May be it’s time to try some...

    In praise of Kevlar/ZX hybrid!!!

No worries. I normally do not ignore folks on web boards either, but some folks deserve it. Most folks who disagree with the premise of the thread state their case and disappear, some folks feel the need to fight a battle that does not need to be fought. I let it ride for a while, but when...

    In praise of Kevlar/ZX hybrid!!!

I use a wise 2086 head with presstretch and just let the tension head settle instead of the manual prestretch. It takes about 40 to 45 seconds for the tension to settle, but it gives the same results. As I only string for myself, I do not mind the extra time required. I just hang out upstairs...

    In praise of Kevlar/ZX hybrid!!!

This. If you are not going to take the time to string ZX yourself, chances are the average proshop stringer is not going to take the time it needs to be done correctly. One of my clubs professionals is also the stringer and we talk strings and stringing quite a bit. I have loaned him...

New Pro Kennex Black Ace series 2020

I have been a PK fan since I used the Copper Ace back in the ‘80’s. The flexibility of the Copper Ace has been a key factor in my racquet searches since I started playing regularly 6 plus years ago. I played the Ki5 PSE and Q Tour 325 for a few years, but did not like the stiffness of those...

    In praise of Kevlar/ZX hybrid!!!

The common misconception of Kevlar is that if it so much stiffer than other strings, it must be bad for your arm health as it must transmit more vibration into your racquet. What most folks forget is that DuPont designed Kevlar to be a shock absorber. It was designed to be used in...

    In praise of Kevlar/ZX hybrid!!!

Thanks for the tip. The thread is a lot cleaner now.(y) I have been double pulling the first two mains with the prestretching function engaged and have had more consistent results as well. In my open pattern, those are the first two to lose snap back.

    In praise of Kevlar/ZX hybrid!!!

I was also not aware AA was using Ashaway Kevlar back in the day. Always thought is was Prince’s Kevlar hybrid, but apparently it was Ashaway Kevlar mains with natty gut crosses. They did not report Michele’s tension on the podcast for the hybrid, but in another thread she responded that it...

If it is good enough for Andre Agassi, we'll try it! All things Ashaway tennis strings with Steve Crandall

I enjoyed this episode immensely. Ashaway has been my string of choice for a few years now. I know they mentioned Michele’s tension on a full bed of Monogut ZX, but they did not mention the tensions of the Kevlar hybrid. Do you happen to know what the tensions were in the hybrid @TW Staff ?

    In praise of Kevlar/ZX hybrid!!!

The Kevlar is definitely lighter than poly. With the hybrid, I had to add weight to my racquets to get them back to the same specs I had with a poly syn gut hybrid.

    In praise of Kevlar/ZX hybrid!!!

Depends on the string bed. When I was using 2015 Blade 104’s with a tighter 18 x 19 pattern, I found my ideal tensions to be 57 lbs x 50 lbs. When I shifted to a significantly more open pattern Prince Tour 98 ESP 16 x 16 pattern I needed to up the Kevlar tension quite a bit to manage power...

    In praise of Kevlar/ZX hybrid!!!

Not everyone, but it is recommended. I use 15% machine pre stretch on both the Kevlar and Zyex and let the machine continuously pull the Zyex until it settles in on the cross strings (usually a 30 to 40 second process after the initial tension is reached/machine beep) Others swear by...
