What was the last movie you watched?

K kids, time for some grown-up movies and analysis. Before I proceed, though, let's take care of the TCM watchlist 1st since the last one has been sitting on the previous page for a while now (the usual terms apply): 10/21 - Forbidden Planet (1956), Smiles of a Summer Night (1955 | Criterion)...

Federer v. Sampras Ultimate Historical Match-up?

I actually meant neutralizing in a more offensive sense with a capital O. Novak is more of a counterpuncher, yes, though a damn offensive and complete one in his own right. Apart from the unseemliness of it all why the hell would anyone wanna take part in such a macabre "celebration"? A big...

Federer v. Sampras Ultimate Historical Match-up?

I know Pete has supported Republicans in the past but AFAIK he hasn't exposed himself as a fact-denying Dumpster. If he turns out to be one even I'll have to seriously rethink my fandom. Given my dustups with Vilas fanboys that's rather unlikely, LOL. Why the Q? To my knowledge the only Argie...

Federer v. Sampras Ultimate Historical Match-up?

Pistol, at the majors at any rate. And no, you can't "disagree," because I'm right about everything. Probably the juiciest matchup of the OE, though, with the only arguable exception of Pistol-Mac or Fred-Mac (depending on whether you prefer power or finesse). P.S. Is it just moi or does...

    NBA 2021-2022 Thread

I really wonder why the 76ers don't just cut their losses and dump Simmons. The guy in all probability still can't shoot and seems utterly unwilling to be a team player. Time to face reality and start looking for a replacement. Gotta say I'm intrigued to see how Russ will fit in with the...

    Atp stats problem

It's probably your browser. The ATP Leaderboard recently stopped loading on my Chrome (which I normally use for "nonserious" stuff) so I stick to Firefox now. And FYI you can use the Stats page ("Stats" under "Stats") for active players so there's that extra option to try.

We'll NEVER see a player with prettier strokes than Federer's

Edberg without that weird FH would overtake Fed cuz of his immaculate BH and superior net game and movement (for real), but yeah Fred is probably the smoothest player we've seen on the men's side. Among women I like my gal Justine. Anyhoo that's not why I'm wading into this uninteresting...

On the centenery of his birth: a Jaroslav Drobny appreciation thread

It still isn't. (American) football gets the lion's share of attention but hockey isn't far behind in concussions/athlete exposure: https://www.foundationhealth.org/our_community/fhp_healthbreak/hockey_concussions_are_serious_business I normally don't make a fuss about typos but this is the...

Who is more talented: Thiem or Nalbandian?

Depends. Thiem has a higher ceiling on hard due to his firepower, but then his mediocre return limits said ceiling on the naturals so Nalby wins if we're talking all surfaces. That said I'd expect Dom to eventually nab a (HC) Slam in another era while I can't say the same about Dave. The '20...

How did Federer win the hearts of the masses?

Half the world probably haven't even heard of Federer but you jokers somehow seem to think he's beloved by "the masses." Tennis junkies may well be the most out-of-touch fanbase on the planet. One more thing: He secured it when he won Wimbledon, no matter what the #s say. But yeah, grown-ass...

    Squid Game

It doesn't take a Bazin to realize that there's something wrong with a show that makes the Kim regime's talking points for him. When I noted the one exception (Hong Sang-soo) to "the SK model" I neglected to include Lee Chang-dong, probably the best Korean filmmaker alive whose Burning (2018)...

    Squid Game

Since I'm interested in (South) Korean culture but pay virtually zero attention to K-pop and -dramas I try to catch up on Korean movies that get screened stateside, let alone become such worldwide phenomenons as Parasite and this show, but after reading synopses of the latter that make most...

Deserving players who never won slam

Enough of this Mecir (or Rios or Nalby) worship. Barring an extraordinary set of circumstances no man without a serve wins a major in any era. Period. That's marketing. It's fair to say the AO then wasn't on par with the other 3 but Miami? A hard HELL NO. There's more to a Slam than a stacked...

Deserving players who never won slam

In the last 40 years or so Leconte is the correct answer, followed by Scud who wasn't quite as creative, versatile or mobile but almost makes up for it in power. You keep pushing this fallacious compuhtishion rationale but it's ultimately useless if the player in question doesn't conquer the...

Federer vs Djokovic . Who is greater?

We'll never see eye to eye on this so I'ma put it this way. Novak may overcompensate for his real or perceived lack of popularity vs. Fedal, but I don't buy that, all things considered, Novak has been overcompensated in his late career for his early struggles vs. his rivals... provided that this...

Federer vs Djokovic . Who is greater?

But that's not what I said. I'm saying you should look at a player's career as an old-fashioned balance of sorts. It was heavily leaning Fedal's way in Novak's early career and now it's the other way around. Like you said '17 was Fed's year of compensation, too. Ditto with Rafa. 2 each vs...

Federer vs Djokovic . Who is greater?

Pfff, '99 ain't even Pistol's 3rd-best outing at SW19 ('94, '95 and '97 are higher, possibly also '93 if we're looking at the finals only). Besides hard to "pass" a guy when his volleys are literally out of reach to begin with. I don't hold '99 in the highest regard cuz of Pete's ho-hum (by his...

Federer vs Djokovic . Who is greater?

As you know I fully acknowledge that this is the weakest men's field since '68, if not ever, but I also believe history has a funny way of evening things out and we're starting to see that. If Med turns out to be a one-hit wonder and Alex, Stef & Co. keep sucking at the majors I'll grant that...

Federer vs Djokovic . Who is greater?

I touched on this in another post but here are the correct GOATs by specific criteria. If you want the best man to win the GS, you bet on Laver for his unrivaled versatility. If you have no clue what surface the hypothetical match/series will be played on, you go with Borg. If complete...

Federer vs Djokovic . Who is greater?

Novak has the best case out of all OE candidates (unless you include Rocket), but this really amounts to dick measuring between fanboy factions. Besides replace any of the Big 3 with any older GOAT and I guarantee you he'd be right in the mix. Oh and.... Pistol owns 'em all. And Navratilova...

Rank these single slam winners from best to worst (competed in open era)

Enough of this who-was-#1 nonsense. The only 1-Slammers who can be said to have been the real #1 of the year are Roddick and Ferrero, and even those 2 take a back seat to '03 Fed. Nobody thought Muster or Moya had overtaken Sampras no matter what the ATP #s said. Apart from Agassi prior to the...

What order do you rank Lendl, McEnroe, Connors, Agassi in as far as greatness

In the only opinion that matters (read: mine) Mac remains a GOAT, so he's on top. And why am I not remotely surprised that one of our resident troglodytes is a clueless Agassi fanboy that buys into flash (sorry, "image") over substance. And she's apparently a fiftysomething. A complete waste of...

Nobel Peace Prize, who wins it today?

If you follow Democracy Now! like moi Maria Ressa probably isn't a name new to you: Seems like an awfully good-natured person, despite every excuse to be angry, bitter and defeatist about her persecution and the state of her nation and journalism at large. Interestingly she happens to share...

What are Nadal's best FH matches?

I was about to say U jokers are so loath to give Novak and NextGen any credit you forgot/ignored this obvious choice. Yes, good call. This British bud of mine, who usually knows his tennis, was going gaga over Stanimal's run at the time and telling our e-gang (well, only 3 of us but who's...

Nadal is massively underrated outside clay

Correct, they're pretty much in the same boat on their worse surface (no, indoor clay doesn't count). Here's the why in more detail: And as I keep pointing out Pistol made the 60% (in GW) Club on clay twice in '93 and '94, while the list of FO champs and finalists who never earned that...

Is the ATP Cup another de facto exhibition à la the Laver Cup?

Looks like the majority of you jokers think the ATP is a cut above the Laver. And since I'm never less than fair I'll also add the important point that the former does offer ranking points unlike the latter (though that enticement was carried over from a proposed revival of the WTC, the Laver's...

Is the ATP Cup another de facto exhibition à la the Laver Cup?

Hard to say it's "testing the waters for the format" when the DC introduced pretty much the same thing with its '19 edition, a year before the inaugural ATP Cup. Which brings me to: I do think the bigwigs were on the right track for once with the World Cup-style format. I was in fact among...

    Fastest tennis game ever?

I assure you that wasn't Pete going thru the motions on return. More like the Ivanisevic serve was virtually impossible to read and there was literally nothing you could do when Good Goran was feeling it. Still the single most devastating weapon I've seen in tennis. Pistol probably cruised...

    Fastest tennis game ever?

It's practically impossible to play better GC tennis than Goran in those 2 sets or in his '94 demolition of Boris. In fact you could go so far as to say he's the guy with the highest GC peak ever cuz that serve is literally unbreakable when on. And that '95 serving exo was vs. Pistol who would...

Is the ATP Cup another de facto exhibition à la the Laver Cup?

It's a (semi-)serious Q, actually. Would like to hear from those who have actually seen some of the Cup matches. I just wanted to highlight two of my faves' ATG performances and I should add that Boris switched into a higher gear in the '89 DC finals, but....
