    Wilander vs Courier on clay

If Mats had wanted, he could have won the French at least till 1992-1993. If he'd remained at the top, I can't see him lose against Chang, Gomez and probably not Courier. Bruguera in 1993? I'm not sure either. I'm not saying that he would have played the final each time till 1992 but had he...

    Wilander vs Courier on clay

I don't invent facts or try and make a point LOL! If "own" is not the most appropriate word, young Mats beat young Ivan in several major occasions, at the French in 1982 or at the Australian Open in 1983. Then Ivan became a better player and dominated the Tour during the next 3-4 years but Mats...

    Wilander vs Courier on clay

Jim played very well at the French in 1992 indeed. But Mats is overall a much complete player that Jim, very versatile and very smart on (and off) the court. If Mats could own prime Ivan, I can't see him lose against Jim. But as always all this is based on nothing as it just never happened.

    Wilander vs Courier on clay

Well, if you compare tennis in the early 80s VS tennis of the late 90s yes. But the gap is not so huge between, let's say, 1988 and 1992-93. A lot of top players of the 80s did great in the early 90s too. I see Mats wining Slams until 1992 or 1993 (he was 29 in 1993) if he'd wanted too.

    Wilander vs Courier on clay

Mats of course. He was much more complete and versatile than Jim -- saying this, I like Jim a lot. Jim was more powerful but I see no problem for peak Mats to counter-attack peak Jim on every surface, clay included of course.

I guess he wants to finish on a more positive note but apart from that, it could have been, yes…

It was 30 years ago today

I remember this, it was good fun, and still is, except maybe for poor Aaron. I don't know what they did to Jimmy in that tournament but he could run for 4 hours like a teenager lol. What I like less though is that it was… 30 years ago.

Last pics of Agassi's hair. First pics of shaved head.

I've read Pete's, Mac's and Boris' book, so maybe I'll come to read Andre's. But as much as I like the three others, I don't have as much sympathy for Andre, whom I find arrogant or jealous in too many occasions. Just a personal opinion though. I've heard about the wig at the French Open or...

Last pics of Agassi's hair. First pics of shaved head.

Funny topic. I haven't read Agassi's book but it's crazy to think that he started wearing extensions in 1988 lol. The first pic of "shaved" Agassi that I remember was taken in December 1994 and published in a magazine in January 1995. I think I could still find it if I searched deep. I can't...

    The Fischer Faction!

Are they retail Pro N1s or it is something else under the black paint (custom Pro N1s, old Fischer for a pro player etc.)?

    Sampras Green Wilson Racquet Question

Mmm that's probably true but I would have sworn that Pete used a different frame than his usual PS at the French in 1991. I'll try to check with old vids.

    Sampras Green Wilson Racquet Question

Thanks. I can't remember who Mats played in the first round but he won in straight sets. What really happened during the next round against young Santoro has haunted my nights for long (I was a young dude then) and I still have no answers. Sure it was not prime Mats but he could / should have...

    Sampras Green Wilson Racquet Question

Nice recollection. 1991, I guess it makes us "old men" by now... Did you see the Wilander-Santoro match by any chance?

    Sampras Green Wilson Racquet Question

True. I watched him practice against Gaudenzi at RG in 1997 and I thought he would die on the court. Crazy lol.

Just came across this one and thought it was well worth a shot. One of the GOATs (if not the GOAT) in action.

Lendl fainted from heat exhaustion in the lockeroom after winning RG 1984

Back then the towel circus didn't exist. The ball boys gave it to the players but not between each point like today. That said, you're right to point this out.

Cool. You could already see that Pete had his huge serve... and a few months after, Chang would win the French Open. They all look so young... nice video thanks.

Ouch, it hurts. One more who got caught by cancer... and you're never old enough to die from cancer. I remember him as Boris's coach. Very sad. RIP Mike DePalmer.

Are Federer's slice and volleys in the Top 3 Slice and Volleys in the Open Era?

Watch Mac Well, it's forgetting Mac or Sampras, amongst other famous volleyers.

Are Federer's slice and volleys in the Top 3 Slice and Volleys in the Open Era?

His slice is good but not exceptional. His volleys are OK but not even close to some specialists between mid 60s to mid 90s. Having said that, his game at the net is probably a victim of surface homogenisation and polys. As far as I can remember, young Federer was better at the net that prime...

    What held Rafter back?

As others said just above, his ground game was not good enough. I didn't say it was bad (he was a pro player), just not good enough. He was a master volleyer and a top notch server too. Injuries didn't help. Having said that, he had a really amazing career: two GS, twice a Wimbledon finalist...

Who is the best shotmaker the game has ever seen ?

Ah yes, almost forgot about Korda Sr. When he was on, he was really impressive too.
