Dear UTR: you might want to take a closer look at your algo

UTR does not use any results after 12 months at all. This is a huge flaw for this system when it comes to adult rec tennis. This may work well for a high school kid to not have his sophomore results effecting his junior year rating but it is a disaster for adult rec tennis. I have played...

Sure it is great for many women (although some females don't like it because they are afraid of getting hit by a fast ball - which I think is also caused by the skill disparate). In my area the bottle neck is finding men for these teams not women. And in my area there is only one regular men's...

Creighton and JLyon Now since they bumped up a much larger percentage of females and bumped down a much larger percentage of men this will make mixed doubles even more of mess than it was before. This artificial divide between men and women rating system does nothing but reduce...

    2021 All TT Team - 3.5 Men

Definitely do not let these numbers dissuade you from playing up. The way USTA runs their rating system the data and sample size are too limited to be that reliable. Plus they dropped a year off so the differences in areas are huge. According to the UTR chart if you are upper 3.5 you are also...

https://computerratings.blogspot.com/2021/12/analyzing-2021-usta-ntrp-year-end.html The other explanation for this is USTA is giving people what they think they they want. Men want to get rated lower and women want to get rated higher. The problem is this just widens the disparate between men...

I'm showing several people that played on the champion 9.0 mixed doubles team that still show a self rate from the prior year. Shouldn't they show at least a mixed rating for the current year? Edit: it seems the only way you get a mixed rating is if your mixed rating is higher than your old...

And they don’t even rate many mixed league matches if they do not go to nationals. It’s almost like usta doesn’t care at all about mixed doubles. I guess I can see that at the pro level but at the rec level where people are just trying to get teams together I don’t understand the whole men and...

It seemed pretty accurate in my area. Not many bumps happened even for people I was pretty sure would get bumped. Edit: Even some people TR thought would get bumped didn't get bumped.

For me it was the opposite. I played 5 matches - although 2 were on november 7 so I am not sure if they count. TR has 3 matches for me as an individual and no matches for me in the year end predictions. I know the official party line is that USTA and Tennis record have nothing to do with...

My thoughts on doubles as a singles player

I'm sort of learning both. And I think the doubles game requires more technical competence on pretty much all shots other than the approach shot. My weak serves and returns do not seem to cost me as much in singles as they do when I am playing strong doubles players. There are more players...

TR still hasn't listed my mixed double matches from November 7th. They did get 3 matches that were played in October but did not predict anything for me. Is there some new prediction or is it just the dial that has been up all year? Shouldn't 2.5 be the middle? I don't think I...

    USTA mixed leagues

The issue op describes in the last post may have more to with the large disparate in men’s and women’s ntrp ratings than captains. If usta wants mixed leagues to grow they should address that.

Interesting. "Which matches do and don’t count toward a player’s rating? All USTA Leagues (i.e., 18 & Over, 40 & Over, 55 & Over, 65 & over, Mixed) are included in the Year-End Rating calculation. Mixed Doubles divisions will only have an effect on the ratings of players who played...

I agree. But would add it is not all illegitimate tactics though. Those areas where the weather is nice for tennis year round will naturally have more players per mile. That means they will have an easier time filling their teams with players that are at the very top of the rating level...

I am not sure how to interpret what they are saying - other than they are clearly trying to communicate - oh no we didn't screw up by not rating after 2020. Here is what they said: "The 2021 year end algorithm ran as it typically does in any given year. The difference was a longer date range...

I think the most important sections would be the sections with the most players. The exception might be 3.0 players since they are rapidly advancing - so I would say for men the 3.5 18+ and 4.0 18+ sections would be the most important. Plus I think it is important to focus on teams with c...

Is this UTR to NTRP conversion chart accurate?

I think that chart makes sense and shows how wide the levels are in men’s ntrp. Utr won’t even rate a match between opponents with more than 2 rating points difference - unless the weaker player actually wins the match. I think that makes it so the better player doesn’t feel like they have...

I just played the match and lost 6-1 7-6. The first set was not as much of a blow out as it appeared (I got to 40 in about 5 of the 6 wins he won) but the second set was not as close as it appeared either as I felt like I was on the defense most of the time. If I had to guess I would say...

I self rated 3.0 and played five mixed doubles matches. In 4 of the matches my partner was also a self rate with only 5 matches. In the one match I played with a partner that had more rated match experience we played against a self rate that will only have two mixed doubles matches in before...

Is this UTR to NTRP conversion chart accurate?

Men’s ntrp is different then women’s ntrp. I am saying the utr conversion in Ian’s chart fits women’s ntrp in my area. It does not fit for the men’s ntrp in my area. Edit: according to that chart a UTR 4.5 can be a male ntrp 3.0 a 3.5 or a 4.0.

Is this UTR to NTRP conversion chart accurate?

Interesting. UTR shows which matches boosted and lowered your rating and by how much in a graph. Are you saying this match point is below your rating? Also if one of the people you partnered with in the past had a big win that may have lowered your rating. I'm not sure how many matches...

    Data, Opinions and Schmke's blog

Cashman Schmke offered some data about how well the ntrp predicts outcomes and it works pretty well. I have never played a USTA single gender match - which is the only match that goes to your main USTA rating. I have played 5 usta mixed matches and about 10 non usta matches. If I end up...
