    Quest for 5.0 at 50?

Not even exaggerating, I'm 25 lbs over race weight! Not saying that's a health weight, but still... As I said before though, I enjoyed gaining that weight. Living like a jockey racing bikes has its limitations. As far as the racket mods, I'm reminded of when my cat got sick (bear with me)...

    Quest for 5.0 at 50?

a quick update, to keep it alive! we decided to play it straight vs. Fiddler rules. I probably should have gone for the doubles allies after all, as TJM's competitive spirit and heavier-than-expected shots were too much for me in the 10 point breakers we played (I'm too old and rusty to place...

outside, court 2. Not sure where the ticket sale booth located. Just look for the large crowds and head that direction.

    Quest for 5.0 at 50?

I would be, but I'll be short on time, so I'll have to keep it local. Maybe if there's a rematch after a practice some more!

    Quest for 5.0 at 50?

eh, anything I did in tennis pretty much overlapped with the Reagan administration. Hardly seems relevant at this point! Plus, I'm incredibly old! I'll be 57 this month. That's practically 60! I figure based on that, and Fiddler's prodigious posting history, he is certainly better at tennis...

    Quest for 5.0 at 50?

As the anticipation builds to a fever pitch, I'll engage in the time-honored tradition of pre-excusing! I know it seems like TJ is giving up quite a bit here, but I have several significant disadvantages: I haven't played a competitive tennis match in >25 years I really haven't looked at a...

    Quest for 5.0 at 50?

doubles alley it is! I'll PM you to set it up. in lieu of the $100 payment, if I win I'll also accept a complimentary racket consult to revolutionize my game... If you want me to play with a random stick to prove my "racket doesn't matter" concept, my "requirements" are pretty simple...

    Quest for 5.0 at 50?

any chance I can get in on this? I haven't played a competitive tennis match in over 25 years, and hadn't looked at a racket before last year. I think that puts me at a 1.5 or so??? Based on that, these handicaps seem totally appropriate! p.s. 5.0 or no 5.0, I just don't see a racket making...

I think I made progress on my forehand. Look!

while it's more apparent against the ball machine (and point taken regarding timing and the machine), you are still largely playing flat footed. @1:25 is a perfect example. Yes, he had good depth on the ball, but you kinda stood there while the ball as in the air and then handcuffed yourself at...

    racquet suggestion for coach please?

I'd look at a ProKennex 7G. It actually plays similarly to the PD+. It's rated at 66 but plays much softer. I'm not prone to arm issues but the ProKennex racket do generally seem pretty arm-friendly.

I think I made progress on my forehand. Look!

Congrats on the weight loss! Looking good, and that's going to be a big help. My honest advice: you're are 100% worrying about the wrong thing. your forehand swing in the first video is mostly fine. You're making one clear mistake--over-rotating upon contact; but you're doing this in the...

Do you know what grips your opponents use?

I've worked as an instructor long enough to be able to immediately be able to recognize this in pretty much all situations. I don't think it provides any actionable information at all, unless you're working as an instructor and yelling at people to hold the racket correctly. Mostly what I notice...

Set video against vicious lefty slice serve (4.0-5.0 ntrp?)

I didn't watch the whole thing, but two things I'll mention: don't run around to hit a forehand in the ad court on a slice serve. You're fighting it the entire way, and had multiple errors off it. I'd just chip it back with your backhand and get back to the center of the court. His ball has too...

How many tennis players can run one mile in under 5 minutes 30 seconds?

You're comparing apples and garden hoses... A mile runner is purely focused on aerobic output and running economy. A tennis player has to have a high level an anaerobic power and relays a lot more on fast twitch muscle fibers. Tennis players are also a lot heavier. Ballpark vo2 required to...

Anyone else have a pure 100% slicer in their hitting rotation?

It really shouldn't...just lift the target. The whole point of the sort backswing is to aid control, not reduced depth. I'd suggest practicing a bit closer in, maybe even just inside to get used to taking the ball really early. And short backswing doesn't mean bunt--you can still swing away...

Anyone else have a pure 100% slicer in their hitting rotation?

a regular hitting partner of mine is in his early 60's, super fit and looks like Ken Rosewall... classic strokes, totally flat forehand flat and a super penetrating slice BH, that he can hit on really tough angles. He's a former D1 player turned professional squash player, now back playing some...

How many socks you go through for a match?

my suggestion: use a light wool sock. They wick much better and you'll never feel the need to change them. I got these for cycling (where it's pretty difficult to change mid-ride), but they work great for tennis as well: https://swiftwick.com/products/pursuit-four-ultralight?variant=39449308954693

Andy Murray is the tennis story of the year.

Hingis' story compares well to Murray, but it's a totally different thing than Karatsav. There are always some Mardy Fish types who spend a few years not realizing their potential and then figure it out after a few years and make a big jump... but I just don't think there is a single example of...

    Exercise bike after tennis?

It falls pretty squarely into that "myths of exercise science" categories. But people prescribe it anyway, I think because of 1) habit, and 2) the other guys are doing it, so I should do that, too...

Matchplay - Scrub looking for some constructive feedback.

I think this may be part of the issue. I'm going on the eye test (and having matches charted for me in college years). I'm not seeing anywhere near that level of forced errors. While I'm seeing (from both players) are just a ton of missed rally balls. Just going back to the original matched...

Matchplay - Scrub looking for some constructive feedback.

Strongly disagree with this statement. Look at the first 10 points. 8 pointed ended in unforced errors. 1 winner, 1 forced errors. At this level, winning is about hitting back one more ball than the other guy. These matches are determined by unforced errors, not forced errors. Cut out the...

Andy Murray is the tennis story of the year.

for me, the curious case of Aslan Karatsev is the story of the year. Murray's story is great, no doubt. But ultimately it's a story of an elite guy going elite things, albeit with a new hip. Raducanu? Great story, but it's a future great doing great things at the beginning of her career. Not...

How many tennis players can run one mile in under 5 minutes 30 seconds?

Yeah, sorry--that's not possible. https://www.runnersworld.com/news/a20864341/71-year-old-sets-blazing-fast-mile-world-record-on-low-mileage/ World record time for 70+ was broken not that long ago. 5:29 for a stand-alone indoor mile. A 68 year old is not running 2 miles at 10:10, or anywhere...

What will racquet tech be like in 20 years?

I never said that. And just to be clear, I'm not "anti-China". I've spent a ton of time living there, as well as elsewhere in Asia. My first-hand experience is that IP is simply not viewed in China in the way that it is in the West, or in Taiwan or Japan. IP theft happens everywhere, but it's...

How many tennis players can run one mile in under 5 minutes 30 seconds?

You mean 10:10 for each mile, not for 2 miles, correct? Because no one that age is running 2 miles in that time.

What will racquet tech be like in 20 years?

full disclosure: I work in the bike biz on the product side of thing--so I'm looking at it from that perspective.... All of the large players (Giant, Merida, Trek, Specialized, Cannondale) and most of the top tier specialty brands (Cervelo, Pinarello, BMC, Canyon etc) are also investing heavily...
