How do you tell if you’re having a bad day or if your opponent is at a much higher level than you?

Are these UTR ratings? You said it was a utr match and didn’t mention usta ratings. I think people are mostly talking usta ratings. You didn’t mention either your or his usta rating. If you don’t have a lot of experience playing matches you may have faulty ideas of what it is like to play...

    Spectator agony at scoring errors

I used to be unable to *not* keep score. I would keep score in everything even when we weren't keeping score. Now I find it is easy to forget the score after a long point. https://www.**********************/score-keeper.html Usually with 4 people on the court someone will correctly remember...

Receiving a player background form indicative of grievance filed?

I am assuming these are not requirements. Every male under the age of 36 that played for a D3 school must rate themselves at a 4.5 or higher?? "Division III men also have a broad range from UTR 3.0 - 12.0" https://www.utrsports.net/blogs/news/data-deep-dive-range-of-utrs-in-college-tennis

    "out" call from adjacent court????

I agree it is odd that no one else heard it. Did his partner think you called it out as well? I wouldn't want to encourage the other team to ignore out calls and keep playing "just in case."

    Gender neutral rating for usta

I don't think UTR overrates women to start. I don't think they give anyone a starting rating before they play their first match. (WTN seems to assign a rating at the start - are you referring to that system?) The reason UTR may be off for different genders is because, at least in my area, and...

    Gender neutral rating for usta

I'm bumping this thread so FYB's thread on Utah's 4.0 team can focus on what he wants it to focus on. I was hoping WTN would actually be the solution. Unfortunately it seems USTA is determined to make it the worst rating system in tennis.

I have never seen this myself but you aren’t the only one to say this so I accept it is true to some extent. Do they refuse to play if it is 3 players of the same gender and one of the other? Or is it only a problem when it is 2 men versus 2 women? In my area all the clinics/drills are coed...

It may be that most women would appeal down at that specific level I’m not sure. I agree the data makes it clear there are more down appeals as the levels go up. I didn’t think chalkdust was making a point about that specific level but rather about level based play overall. I’m a 3.0...

Yep that is the sense I get in my area as well. That is why in my area the main reason there are not more mixed doubles teams is due to fewer *men* wanting to play mixed doubles. It can be very hard to even take it seriously when there are so many mismatches. You will see in these threads...

Share your WTN - Crowd sourcing the NTRP to WTN mapping

This is very frustrating: https://computerratings.blogspot.com/2024/05/usta-introduces-new-player-summary.html Who at USTA is responsible for this or WTN generally? I suspect someone told an intern to publish this about a week before the internship ended.

how are your usta league coordinators?

We have a great league coordinator. She seems to genuinely want to grow league tennis in our area. All of our matches are played indoors so she has to do all the scheduling. I have learned not to even ask for a reschedule.

Why do you think a league like that would be less popular then mixed? I would think they would be more popular - because the ability bands would be more narrow. Mixed is even worse then men's adult levels when it comes to wide ability bands.

The way USTA does mixed doubles is terrible mainly due to the two different rating systems. But even so, in my area (about 100k people) I think there are over 2xs as many mixed matches as adult men's matches. It just makes it easier to get teams together when you can play both genders on a...

I agree with the gist of what you are saying. I am not sure whether it is because there are more women, or more matches, that the women's ability ranges are narrower at each level. Of course, the two are related. But I tend to agree that something like you describe may explain why women have...

The USTA rule RS keeps referring to is not only bad due to being vague. These level based leagues *should* try to practice and improve in order to win. It just seems odd to require that if you believe you are going to really try to practice and improve your tennis then you should rate yourself...

I agree that level based play will always have issues. But these issues can be addressed. What you describe is far worse for men then it is for women. The 4.05C rated female is less likely to appeal down and therefore the 4.5 leagues will have more players at the lower levels. The men's...

    Is your rating gap widening?

There is no question that singles requires you to be in better shape then doubles. But I also know some older players that are just better at singles. They hit loopier balls that they can place very well and they are not great at the net etc. They also can run marathons and are generally...

Any number of reasons. For example: 1) You can create a team full of below level players to play against for this very purpose! In other words, the other team may be in on the plan. (I'm not claiming that is happening in this particular case BTW) 2) Many players want competitive matches and...

    Shame on the RG organizers

If Nadal would have won he would have taken over a top player's draw. If anyone would complain it should be Zverev. Zverev wasn't thrilled to have to play such a strong opponent first round, but seemed happy to be able to play a legend. Zverev has about as good a chance as any to win this...

Sorry for the delay in responding. I am still neck deep in work but will likely read and respond more here next week. I propose that a player would have to play 3-4 matches with a different player as partner if he plays doubles. The opponents likely should have some variety as well. But...

But it is so transparent. You have ability level based play were it is so obvious they are claiming lower levels *and* the system allows people to obviously claim to be a lower skill level then they are. That is it. That is the story. I suppose you can get into the psychology of people...

    New Southern Rule for 2024

The problem is she is arguing for lower quality doubles for everyone else. Mixed leagues that should be full of teams because they are the easiest to create/fill suffer because not too many 4.0 guys want to play competitive tennis with 3.0 women.

Tell me when you have 3-4 matches in a row where you get an average performance rating in the UTR 4.5 range. This is the sort of wild swing we are talking about when we say someone with a consistent 8.5-9.0 UTR rating would play as a USTA 4.0 player.

I think UTR is showing me the singles UTR he had at the time. It doesn't seem able to show me the doubles UTR he had at the time though. (or at least I don't know how to see it) It doesn't appear he had an established singles rating in 2022 as there was a gap from October 2017 to May 2023...

New to League tennis - feeling discouraged

There is also talent height and general athleticism. There are people who have/willdo what it takes to win at sports and others who wont. I remember telling my daughter how it will be cool to play more intense sports in high school. And she asked why do you think I want more intensity in...

    Playing While Injured vs Tanking

I wouldn't consider it tanking at all. But yes it can certainly tank your rating if you play on after a sprain or muscle spasm. In our area we have to play teams that are up to 2.5 hours away so we usually do double headers. I have sprained an ankle and had my calf muscles start spasming...

New to League tennis - feeling discouraged

I have been playing for almost 6 years 2 to 3 times a week and I am still a 3.0. I hear you. I was a bit discouraged when I got my 3.0c ratings the last 2 years even though I expected the last one. But here are a few of my thoughts: This is an adult competitive league. So even at 2.5 you...

No difference between 3.5 and 4.0 in local area … how to fix it?

The answer is simple and well known. More data/games will allow the algorithm to better sort out the players. Unfortunately USTA refuses to even rate the majority of USTA matches that men play in, in my area. There are more mixed matches in my area then then men's adult league matches. It...
