How Do You Know If Your Child Has "It"?

thanks man. it just hilarious to watch him doing push-ups yesterday on our beat up public courts. i've told him that we will practice if he wants to and the homework's done. i'm pretty sure in the last couple of years i've asked him to play just a handful of times. if he could play every...

How Do You Know If Your Child Has "It"?

yes this should be an interesting thread. as for my little guy @ 8, he's technically solid/clean from both sides and he's the kid that will run through a fence to get the ball. i have to sometimes make him hit 2 bounces on wide balls because he's about to do a header on the court. i'm...

My son has a question for all of you

good to hear you're looking into it. i mention this to some people and they think i'm nuts and get offended. alot of people including my wife who also has celiac tested negative on the blood test but they did an endescopy (sp?) and it was positive. that happens. it's hard for kids because...

My son has a question for all of you

slightly off topic, but has he been tested for celiac disease? both my kids have it (had digestive issues and fatigue that have now gone away by going to a gluten free diet) and in discussions with various doctors they indicated it has been linked to ADD and other neurological disorders. all...

Regulation Ball for 26 inch racquet

one advantage for using the 26 inch over the full size is when your kid learns the conti grip for volleys/slice/serve. it's pretty difficult in my opinion for a 7 yo on the full size (but every kid is different). my just turned 8 yo is playing with a 26 BLX Six One (used the Prince 26 Ignite...

How much is too much tennis for a 6 yr old?

TCF, Yea I kinda agree with you, but my sample of watching young tennis kids is relatively small. My son was a hustler from day one and not really sure where it came from. I have to tell him to let some balls go and not chase down everything because he's fallen a bunch of times. Doesn't work...

    Slice backhand

I only allow my 7 year old to hit the slice on low balls or as he makes his way to the net. Somehow he taught himself the slice practicing ping pong. Proper grip and stroke. He's not able to drive the slice from the baseline yet using the continental and usually pops the ball way high. I do...

How do you beat a moon baller?

TCF, I haven't seen any quickstart tournaments but would you say this is pretty common? seems to me the degree of difficulty is greater on these short courts when you've got a kid floating lobs and a legit 8 yo on the other side.

How do you beat a moon baller?

i think floaters is the appropriate terminology for the 8 yo situation. and how much bounce would he be getting if these are quickstart low-compression balls? on the flip-slide, he can get a couple of hours of overhead practice.

How do you beat a moon baller?

are these quickstart tournaments. if so, moonballs would be even more difficult on the short courts. & alot of these suggestions would be for older kids, right? this is the ongoing debate of when should kids be tournament ready. you always tend to play better against technically sound...

    Racquet weight

My 7 yo currently uses the 26 Ignite and I've got it strung with Wilson Nylon at 40 lbs. The racquet has been great and his game is pretty incredible already. He's moved beyond Quickstart and trains with Green Dot and Reg Balls. I don't think he's ready for a full-size until he can fully...

Djokovic: 'New diet helping me win'

yea that's true. mine didn't show up til i was in my 30s, but my wife had been diagnosed with celiac disease in her early 20s. frankly, i don't know why it matters. his dietician thought this maybe an issue and they had it checked out. did he have anyone monitoring his diet before? i'm...

Djokovic: 'New diet helping me win'

for folks diagnosed with celiac that is a pretty common trait, but there are people who are gluten intolerant and with the diet change feel much, much better. in the last few years, researchers have determined that you can be intolerant and not have celiac. doesn't sound like djokovic does...

Djokovic: 'New diet helping me win'

and Redbridge Beer that's made by Anheuser. there are a couple of other brands out there like Bards, but Redbridge is the best. i had some friends over that can drink regular beer and they raved about it.

Djokovic: 'New diet helping me win'

yea, sorry guy, but you're totally wrong. not trying to be curt about it, but if you've got celiac disease or gluten intolerant, its not a passing fad. the only treatment is to change your diet and not a prescription. there are many gluten free products out there that replace the wheat with...

Djokovic: 'New diet helping me win'

Just saw this today. My entire family are gluten intolerant and the most common symptoms are fatigue, weight gain and along with many others. I can definitely believe this story because once you've basically detoxed and changed the diet, you feel 100 times better. Djokovic is my 7-yr old...

Playing with a 3 year old

Now that I think about it, I could've sharpied some black lines on the ball to make it more bee-like. He couldn't get enough of it. We would run around like the bee was chasing us and then I would drop the ball. "Take that bee!" is what he'd say. Whatever works is right.

Playing with a 3 year old

I took my 3 yr old to Target I believe and asked him what his favorite color was (at the time). We ended up buying a 21 inch red "Agassi" Head racquet. I made it very fun and just tried to make contact and giving tons of praise anytime a piece of the racquet touched the ball. I made up a...

To Buy or Not to Buy a Ball Machine

How early would you have a kid hit from a ball machine? Mine's 7 and hit on a friend's b-machine recently and had fun with it and didn't have any trouble returning on the slower settings. Didn't want to stop. It would be a big investment. On the flip side, we have a wall nearby and that's...

Obama fights obesity with QuickStart 10 and under

An endorsement is an endorsement and I don't think it was hollow, but does that really matter. Having the Bryans and Sam at an event is awesome. My question/concern is basically regarding the financial aspect of just participating the higher levels of junior tennis. Being priced out is a...

Obama fights obesity with QuickStart 10 and under

My 7 year old was able to move up after spending a few months in Quickstart. Real balls and full court. Match play would use green dot Wilson. He didn't complain during Quickstart but was definitely not having fun and just wanted to hit. He's much happier on the full court and his friends in...

Obama fights obesity with QuickStart 10 and under

the overall message wasn't tacky at all. tacky is the media and the majority of american's obsession with charlie sheen. having kids get out and possibly pick up tennis through Quickstart is a great thing and you shouldn't be cynical about it. i don't think it was targeted at the elite kids...
