Am I missing something? Did I watch the same final?

Ah, OK. Squeaker = very tight and close match. Aussie slang I guess.

Am I missing something? Did I watch the same final?

Sounds like a squeaker. Who won?

Am I missing something? Did I watch the same final?

The careers of these two players, both of whom I love, are a great rebuttal to the impoverished "slam race" lens through which some people exclusively view tennis. Although both guys have three slams and so are "equal" by that metric - they are tiers apart in terms of their careers and...

The crazy Wimbledon final opening game.

Djokovic looked visibly shaken during and especially after this game. I thought it would be one sided and this game confirmed it. Djoko couldn't overpower him, couldn't outrally him and couldn't finish things at the net. He looked trapped and without a clue of how to escape.

Djokovic mentality in major finals is a myth ?

This was always coming after the way Federer was savaged and decried by the hogs once he started to falter. Every shank, stumble or early exit drove them into paroxysms of malice. Why do they do it?

Carlos Alcaraz: "I will not consider myself a champion until I reach double figures in the 'Grand Slam'"

C'mon folks - don't get fooled by this shot making, chance taking, exhilarating, multi-dimensional pretender - with his charm and his humility and puppyish optimism. Yuk. Dour faced, nihilistic grinders are where tennis is really at. Who's with me?

What do you think of the GOAT concept?

Aaaaaaand, we're off again. I feel like TTW has had this conversation before.
  8. Candide

How would Medvedev have done today?

I imagine Meddy would have taken it in 3 or 4. Djokovic didn't have the energy to hit through and had no appetite for grinding and Medvedev is the ultimate grinder.

What do you think of the GOAT concept?

It's a funny parlor game. Something to keep the online hogs grunting at each other at maximum volume for maximum time and to generate easy copy for sports journalist hacks. The red faced, sweaty, ALL CAPS shrieking devoted to this one topic on TTW is completely absurd. Everyone has their heroes...

why aren’t there any “should djoko retire?” threads yet?

That's a big call about a guy who hasn't had a top ten win this year. I'd like to see some evidence to support such claims. He hasn't provided any yet. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-07-15/novak-djokovic-just-saw-his-future-its-carlos-alcaraz/104097702 "Losses to 20-year-old Italian Luca...

Djokovic mentality in major finals is a myth ?

Agreed. I was also surprised by Connors on 14 and Lendl on 11 - pretty high for such a pair of ornery cusses. But then, they didn't give two sh%#s about tennis as a sport but only winning at all costs.

If Djokovic dominated a weak era, we should say the same about Alcaraz.

Oh god, always with the "weak era" guff. Vibes based but also highly scientific.

Deeply Underappreciated: Alcaraz's 130 Mph Serve. Oh My!!!

I believe he was over 50% on his first serve. He definitely had something like an 84% winning number on first serve and didn't care about having to second serve as he was winning nearly all the rallies. Hence his permission to go for broke on first - great tactics. Kudos Ferrero.

Do we care about this whole Olympics thingy?

I think I've watched 2 Olympics tennis matches in my life. One was Murray's victory and the other Stan and Fed in the doubles. I don't have any sense of FOMO about the rest of it.

Who you got for 2024 USO?

Sinner can rush Alcaraz on a quick hard court and get the error pump flowing. Advantage Italy.

Djokovic mentality in major finals is a myth ?

This article is from 2014! The others may have had lowered their colours another few times, I'm guessing. There is only one man of steel. Does anyone really think he hasn't been hurting for years, especially during the last 5? He never capitulated no matter what - he was too proud. And there...

Djokovic mentality in major finals is a myth ?

To echo a few of the 'experts' around here - "Djokovic, meh, just a pretty backhand and an elegant slice. Mentally weak and clearly a choker and a crier when the chips are down." These kinds of outbursts may make people feel good and attract attention for those who don't get noticed in their...

Wimbledon 2024 Final - [2] Novak Djokovic (SRB) v/s [3] Carlos Alcaraz Garfia (SPN)

This was Alcaraz's easiest match of the tournament by a fair margin. Djokovic should have saved himself for the Olympics. It takes a strong dose of delusion to be a great player but this evaporated, arguably, in game one. He looked despondent and panicked that early, kind of, "Oh ****, now I...

Wimbledon 2024 Final - [2] Novak Djokovic (SRB) v/s [3] Carlos Alcaraz Garfia (SPN)

Djokovic's volleying was made look much worse today because he was terrified of Carlitos' pace. It made him really try to feather every volley just over the net but he doesn't quite have the hands or imagination for it after 20 years of locked in grinding.

Wimbledon 2024 Final - [2] Novak Djokovic (SRB) v/s [3] Carlos Alcaraz Garfia (SPN)

It's easy to start loosening up and hitting with more effect when you've given away any slight hope of winning as he did after the second set. From then on he was just trying to put a bit of respectability on the score - which, with the help of Carlitos, he did.

    Repeat or Revenge?

How could Djokovic not be scared? He was in peak condition last year and couldn't do it. You can develop scar tissue at any age. He knew that Carlos was a year older, stronger and wiser this year and he's a year older, out of form and with a fragile leg. I feel like commentators talked up his...

2nd serve return to the bottom of the net. Lame. Great performance by Kid Flash though.
