Get ready for the rankings war-ITF creating World Tennis Number for 2020. College coaches use WTN or UTR?

USTA promoting this in a big way now. They've had several informational zoom meetings about it. I still wish we could see some player lists with these values so we can compare with UTR.

ITF ups the ante in the "global" ratings game

Are there any lists available anywhere that show WTN's yet? I've seen a few instances of individual player profiles at the ITF website, but no lists. This has been a LONG time in the making. I hope it lives up to the hype.

    IBM Power Rankings

I got sucked down the rabbit hole on this one and wasted way too much time, but here's what I found. As a forecasting model, I disagree that it's pretty dang good. I looked at the other models out there through the quarterfinals. UTR overestimated the number of wins the favorite would win by...

You should start playing singles more like you play doubles.

    IBM Power Rankings

In the first round, you would think this would be very similar to other metrics. If the Watson AI is so good, it could have sampled the implied odds from Vegas. I get that Rune had a little bit of "momentum" advancing out of the qualies, but it shouldn't translate to that big of a difference...

Watson gives Novak a 2 in 3 chance of defeating Rune in the first round: https://www.usopen.org/en_US/matchinsights/1101.html Vegas gives Novak a better than 99 in 100 chance. I think it may be back to the drawing board for Watson's Power Rankings.

UTR, WTN, and introducing IBM! https://www.ibm.com/sports/usopen/ I'm sure it's just a matter of time until the IBM Power Rankings come to college tennis. Can't wait. It sure is the golden age of tennis ratings.

    Doubles UTR’s - what’s going on?

Weird. You'd almost think that would have the opposite effect. As the system discovers your partner is not as good as it thought (and your doubles record doesn't change), then you'd think it would assume you must be better than it thought to compensate for the lower rated player.

Has anyone seen this in use in any significant way yet? I see that several federations are supposedly using it, but I have been unable to find a single listing of players anywhere by their WTN. This has been a REALLY long time in the making (original post says March of 2018). It'll be...

All excellent points. I didn't consider the longer term impacts at all. To come to the defense of the ITA and NCAA here (I know I am waffling a lot on this topic), it'd be nice to flesh out a process that could be followed that was fair and everyone bought into. What I don't want is the...

Listened to the latest Great Shot podcast with Gruskin and Tim Russell (ITA CEO). Overall it was pretty good. Grateful we have a post season at all. Things have been pretty normal this spring (we're all here arguing about this stuff). I also agree it's bad to make changes as a knee jerk...

If I was seeding god, I would have seeded Kova (Illinois), Kingsley (Ohio State), Cukierman (USC), Blumberg (UNC), Galarneau (NS State), and Keegan (if he were playing). Kind of shocked Blaise is an alternate. Even at the 4 his 29-0 record impresses me more than Andrade's 22-7.

So why doesn't Northwestern's coach just tell his players they'll probably lose to UCLA or Texas, and then stay home so that SMU can go instead? SMU's a lot closer to Austin than Northwestern. I'm really glad someone stuck up for SMU and Auburn. It seems like most of the people doing the...

To me stacking is when you serve up a lamb for the slaughter to increase your chances of winning a match down the line-up. When players can and do win, I personally don't consider it a stack. Kingsley and McNalley's UTR's are less than two-tenths of a point apart (13.64 and 13.47). Illinois...

Currently Zeke Clark is the highest ranked Big Ten player at #83. I'm not sure what the impact of the conference tournaments was this week, but not sure how they could've picked up many points playing each other. So how many Big Ten players make the NCAA singles event? I'll set the over/under...

It's a little bit their fault isn't it? If Ohio State and Michigan has done their jobs as hosts kickoff weekend they would have made the indoors and brought a lot more points home to their conference. I think that's why all the Big Ten teams and players suffered under the ITA rankings because...

NCAA chooses 20 sites for tourney-final 16 to be decided 5/3

Any updated predictions on who gets to host prior to the Monday selections? Interesting that according to the ITA rankings no Big Ten teams should host. Also interesting that Mississippi State is not on the list above but will likely be a top 16 ITA team (they are #16 in this week's rankings)...

I've always been a huge fan of Massey's ratings: https://www.masseyratings.com/ctms/ratings Definitely different from the ITA lists with Kova and Kingsley at #1 and #2 (as opposed to #118 and #129 in the ITA's). I'm not sure I would agree with Blaise at #6 when he plays at the 4 (probably no...

Thanks for making this clear. Cannon definitely split #1 duties with McNalley this year (with slight edge to McNalley). Kingsley played in the #1 spot 10 times to Kova's 11. Maybe it's just gamesmanship. Trying to make sure Kova gets a shot at Kingsley if they both make it into the Big Ten...

TennisLink is gone! Well, sort of ... For tournaments at least

So $23M to Deloitte for a revamp of the website (basically news). Does anyone know how much ClubSpark was paid to replace TennisLink? It doesn't seem to be going well. Most tournament pages have complaints in the messages of the tournament home page saying how bad the system is, and now the...

I agree with @texrunner's thoughts here. I understand the change was a long time coming, but not everyone had the same opportunities BECAUSE of the pandemic. I don't think some sections have had any tournaments since last March. So players couldn't participate in the sectional events to get...

That's what all the L2 tournaments have in the notes on their Overview page: 28 players will first be selected using the most recently published USTA National Standing List (scheduled to be published Jan. 13). The remaining 4 positions will then be selected from a National Standings List that...
