    Only player in the draw?

They would probably be happy to give away a cheap plastic trophy if it means the tournament-director can keep his entry-fee money.

Practice or Matches which do u like ?

I prefer hitting but where we treat it like a real point (i.e. from the rally exchange we play out the point, but don't keep score). I like it as a middle-ground between simply rallying versus playing full sets/matches.

Are pre-workout drinks from GNC legal for USTA?

I don't understand this concept of "USTA legal"......I mean, nobody is drug-testing you before your local league match. Mix some of that endurance supplement with some hard-liquor, and you've got the magic potion for success .

    my almost greatest come back.

It probably wasn't the string tension, but instead, it was the mind's perception that a change was needed and somehow these tighter strings would be better.....and so it was. (The OP doesn't even know what type of strings are on this "winning-racquet") Tennis is an odd sport, and the mind...

    Queen's Doubles

This is an interesting post. I think a lot of it might depend on the variables involved (the particularly player, the compatibility of pairings, etc.). In 9.0 mixed, some of the really strong teams (although this is rare) is a 5.0 woman player, with a solid 4.0 guy. In my experience these...

    What is pressure to you?

I don't really feel any pressure hitting any specific shots/strokes in tennis (I think the key is to embed in my own head that I've played tennis a long time, and have hit seemingly millions of these same shots over the years, so it's all committed to muscle-memory....so don't overthink it)...

    What percentage...

You guys have to remember, the really crafty cheaters are not making bad line-calls very often. They'll even give you the point on some close balls. It's only on the big-points and/or the critical moments in a match when it's "just long" or "just wide" with these cheaters.

    People should understand the difference...

I wish more people would self-reflect this question to themselves after a loss: Did you play poorly, or did your opponent make you play poorly? There's a big difference between the two (of course, sometimes it can be a combination of both, that can happen too). I just see so many...

    What's your motivation in tournaments?

My motivation for tournaments is to collect a bunch of dust-collecting trophies so I can throw it in a box and let it sit there in my garage.

    Am I a Sandbagger?

You were a self-rated player this year and looks like you just finished your 3.5 adult-league season without incurring 3-strikes DQ. Doesn't sound like you were sandbagging. And as others have already mentioned, you're probably just get bumped-up at the end of this year...maybe.

Ehrm...uhm...well...Odd Things Coaches Have Said To You

Interaction observed between a Coach giving lessons to this 10-year old junior/kid (on the court next to me, that I overheard): Coach: when you run to hit that running forehand, you gotta hit it like the way Nadal does (*gestures motion*) Junior: Oh, the reverse forehand Coach: Huh...

I know most of you don't approve of this...

Yea, I know. I bet "P" is probably starting his own thread about how a 3.0 player who's only been playing tennis a few months was trying to give him advice on strategy.

    3.5 Doubles - Poaching & Signaling?

I still maintain that as a server, it's important to let your partner know what type of serve you're going to be hitting on a given point, so he/she can anticipate what type of return to expect from an opponent, particularly if your partner will be moving/poaching. That's why I prefer the...

Scorecards, does the color mean anything?

I don't know about any formal rule about this, however, I've played with different types of "scorecards" before (including the column ones with numbers running vertically, and you plug a ball into the slot reflecting the set-score, etc.). Some scorecards will actually have a small section that...

    3.5 Doubles - Poaching & Signaling?

Hand-signals in general are stupid, inefficient, and unnecessary. Ideally, what doubles-partners "should" do is briefly confer with each other before each point in which the server indicates what type of serve he's hitting (slice out wide, kick down the T, etc.) and they also decide whether...

So I broke a ball yesterday.

I was a losing a match recently and instead of breaking a tennis-ball with a serve, I simply just slammed and broke my racquet on the ground. Yea, I'm awesome like that.

    First league game ever tonight

It's "3.0" dude. You can probably just wave your racquet around like a fly-swatter and if you can get enough balls over the net....you can win. I recently hit with RPM strings myself, it's a good poly, but I'll stay with Pro Hurricane Tour. It's really not that different...at least for me.

    Playoff Sandbaggers Beware!

It seems this thread is "mis-titled." Checking ID's is to make sure the player on the court is the same player in the line-up (and on the team roster). But if I'm a self-rated sandbagger...my driver's license isn't going to say that.

Tips for a new league captain?

This may not be a popular comment, but, if you're a captain don't put yourself into every line-up (unless you truly are one of the strongest players on the team). To me, it just looks cheesy. Of course, the captain needs to at least play 2 matches minimum to be individually eligible for...

    the harder they fall

Interesting. In my section, there's a captain that always recruits the top 4.5 players onto his team to create some sort of bionic-super-team. They dominate the regular season, but never make it beyond the local playoffs (maybe one year got to Districts)....and the reason is because most of the...

    Mo Money, Mo Problems

You guys have it all wrong. Here's the key: you recruit the big-time sandbaggers by telling them that they don't need to pay anything (the captain and/or club will cover their league-fees and court-fees)...and all they have to do is join our team and kick-@ss in their matches...

    Let the Stacking commence!!!

Tell me if I'm reading this correctly: they have the best pair and their normal line 3 is also better than yours. ...it sounds like to me your team doesn't deserve to win the league-division. The other team sounds like they have more overall depth on their roster and they probably deserve to...

    Competition

I don't get your mentality. If you just want to drill and/or work on aspects of your game then you SHOULDN'T be playing "social sets/matches" for that. That's what drills and isolated point-playing is for. But if you agree to play an actual set or match, you should bring the intensity &...

    Emergency call during match

A nose-bleed????....whoa, that's about as hardcore-serious as a paper-cut on a finger. There's no such thing as an "emergency" when playing tennis, because there's nothing more important than tennis. Nothing. You can get a new/different wife and have more kids, but you can't ever erase a...

    Thoughts on Mid Season DQ's

You have an honorable philosophy, and I respect that. (But of course you know, there are plenty of other Captains salivating at the mouth trying to recruit these "self-rated" rockstars). And unfortunately, your ethical approach pretty much means your team won't get to board the train of...

What do you think about Juniors playing on Adult teams ?

Forget what the USTA and TennisLink says. FACTUALLY, nobody gets 3-strikes DQ'd from self-rating at "4.5" I don't care if you're a nationally-ranked 18 year old junior. A lot of us "computer-rated 4.5" players were former ranked juniors and played in college, etc. This kid might beat us...

    Rising versus falling players

Since the USTA was on a big crusade last year to bump-up so many players with their revised dynamic-rating algorithm....if this guy actually got bumped DOWN a level, he must really suck. Therefore, I don't want this old guy on my team. As a matter of fact, I don't even want him to be within a...

Doubles in USTA league: Good, bad, and ugly

If you were truly a 4.5 level player now playing 3.5....in reality you should be dominating on the doubles court whichever way you feel like playing and I doubt the captain (or any teammate) would say anything to you otherwise. But if you're losing 3.5 matches, and your team feels compelled to...

    Need Some Advice

Well first of all, I know you're tired but you can't be whiffing on backhand shots. Oh, and I'm sure your doubles partner is secretly hoping you save some energy for your doubles match. ...But I'm glad to see you finally got the win!

NTRP rating-- possibility of getting Bumped up

You might get bumped-up based on your singles league results...but the reality is it'll depend on the "dynamic" rating of your 13 opponents that you played in singles. If they were 3.5's playing up and/or low-end dynamic 4.0's then maybe your average "6-2" scores were actually the...
