Line calls in a doubles match

If it's a tournament or match where there is an administrator of some sort you can use the break between sets to notify them you'd like a line judge for at least a couple of games. Other than that you gotta suck it up - it's part of the game. Retaliatory gestures seldom go well...

getting older and playing at night

I've gone through the same thing. In my case it's that at age 56 I'm beginning to develop cataracts. When light levels are lower and pupils are dilated the early cataracts are in the focal portion of the eye lens. Nothing you can do about it. At your age you're too young for cataract surgery...

    Confidence during matches

So true. I play better against 4.0 - 4.5 players (win more games) than against 3.5 softballers, on account of I've convinced myself I can't defend against that type of play. Just lost a match today on account of that. I've been playing for more than 40 years and I still do it... I don't need a...

    Old man tournaments

Sign of the times. I'm only playing local or short drive tournaments - or traveling to towns my wife and I want to visit anyway for a mini-vacation. It is getting too spendy for a tournament only trip. The $40 entry fee isn't as big a burden as hotels, meals and so on. -C

starting cross with starting clamp on gamma x2

Google search stringing forums. Depending on the frame the technique is different. My Bab Storm needs the first 3 courses woven, clamped, then pulled. Too hard to describe in words. I use an X2 also. Great little stringer. -C

    Social snobs

Look for "mixers" at your rated level. It's a great way to play and meet people.

    In a slump

I completely feel your pain. I run hot and cold too - sometimes for months. For me when my serve takes a powder the whole rest of my game goes with it. I can go out and practice / ball machine and hit aces all day, but in a match the focus goes away and it all falls apart. Seems to be related to...

    Re-training Muscle Memory

Many thanks for the insight. I've had coaching that encouraged me to "run - plant - **** - swing". 4 separate motions, rather than one continuos running, swinging motion. I seem to need reminding... again.... I've got unusually long reach for my height (6'4 tall - 6'6" armspan), so that has...

    Re-training Muscle Memory

Well, the pictures are worth a thousand words. I was consciously trying to keep racquet face closed on backswing and keep my weight moving forward, head down...guess I've got some work to do there... Here's video - the first set is against a machine - slo-mo is of a couple of long balls (I give...

    Re-training Muscle Memory

Complicating it for me was that my "formative years" were spent on clay in the east, wood rackets and primarily a continental grip. The transition to modern equipment, Eastern grips and hard courts has been a constant struggle. On the plus side my early coaching emphasized a strong BH, so that's...

Sounds like me and a ball machine are going to have a meaningful relationship.... I'll shoot some video later this week. Thanks, -C

    Re-training Muscle Memory

After 40+ years it's finally dawned on me that my air-mailing forehands is probably on account of open racquet face on the backswing. How does one break such long held habits? I'm old school - Eastern Grips, long strokes. Thanks, -C

    Most Cushioned Shoe?

Can anyone comment on if the Prince t-14 or 24 have the same construction (cushioning) as the T-22? Price sure is appealing on those 2 models... Thanks.

Shopping for shoes: How can we make it easier?

    Most Cushioned Shoe?

Reviving this thread on account of my 55 year old feet could use some relief. Would love to find something in the sale bin if I could. Currently wear RF's (last years model) Considering Gel 4 or what? -C

    Maybe Mixed Isn't So Bad . . .

One more comment. As for finding suitable competition: If you begin the season unseeded you'll probable encounter some weaker teams in the early rounds. Grind 'em up and spit 'em out. Don't worry, it'll get much more interesting as you get closer to the finals.

    Maybe Mixed Isn't So Bad . . .

Interesting topic. I think I have finally found a compatible partner for mixed. We're eligible for 55's as well as 8.0. Great ( better than me) volleyer, reliable respectable serve and above all rock solid attitude. If one plays the odds, either players serve goes to the "weaker" player 50% of...

    3.5 Serve and Volley?

I fall into the "former 4.0" recently slid (bad year) to 3.5 group (but intending to get back to 4.0....). @ 56 yrs old I simply don't have the wheels anymore to charge in after a hard 1st (I'm 6'4" - playing since I was 10, so my 1st is still up near or in 3 digits). It simply gets there too...

    Calling footfaults is important

Oh Snap! You told me.... As for foot faults - I was called on one in a match by a USTA ref. It was the best thing that could have happened at the time. It made me focus on my form, and my serve improved - won the match. On the rec level, my opinion is that if it's evident I would give my...

    Tennis Elbow and Strings?

I went through similar issues last year. Mine was "Golfers Elbow" rather than tennis - which was directly related to squeezing the racket handle too tight. Also switched to a softer racket (Babo Pure Storm) and away from poly strings to a multi mix. So far favorite is Wilson NXT Control, with...
